Maybe my expectations were too high or maybe Fred’s influence talking about Harry Potter had gotten me overly excited to see flying brooms because once the flames died out, I found myself staring at a typical Elementary school building. Kids from ages 5 to 10 years old were outside playing four square or playing tag. Teachers were on various corners attempting to find shade from the rays of the sun.
This was so very disappointing. Megan, who I came to remember her name fairly quickly, was currently walking ahead of us towards the main doors of the school. I was slightly surprised that nobody from the school asked for some type of identification as we crossed the school yard. In fact nobody even looked our way, not even the children.
Megan approached the two doors and muttered some words under her breath. She opened the door leading us inside the school building. Again, the disappointed look on my face didn’t disappear and I couldn't help but sigh. I envisioned something greater and maybe even Disney magic to occur- not some girl rambling random phrases.
“What’s with that look?” Megan caught my expression from the corner of her eye. I didn’t understand why this girl hated me so much. I mean she started her mean girl attitude the moment she saw me. If I remembered correctly, I already apologize for calling them South Park goths wannabes. Didn't I?
‘You definitely did not’ Fred quickly answered in a low whisper. Fred’s thoughts flowing into my inner thoughts were becoming constant and very annoying.
“The door opening by itself would have been much cooler.” I answered with a shrug as we stepped inside the building. So I didn’t apologize, it’s not like it would have made a difference.
The pale and dark brunette boy who had been defending me since we first met, let out out snort. “Megan’s spells are lame huh.” That was a spell?
“She could have at least said abracadabra.” I muttered causing the boy beside me let out a roaring laugh.
“You know what fuck yo-” Megan was just about ready to go off on me once more but was completely ignored as I realized the school building was merely an illusion. There was nothing inside besides blank walls that looked as if it can go on for miles. Megan repeated the same phrase again echoing through the blank canvas building. The group turned around on cue once Megan finished and I was frightened to find the door that we had previously walked through was no longer there.
Instead the exit was replaced with an additional five doors. The first four doors were wooden and painted with a dark red color. Each door had a golden letter engrave on the door knob; however, the last door was painted a metallic black. It created an ominous feeling that didn’t sit well with me and I can feel my breath growing quicker.
Fred can’t you like teleport me out of here or something! I knew I was growing desperate when I was asking the devil himself to save me.
"I can’t. At least for right now. They know that I'm with you." Fred answered leaving me with more confusion and anxiety filling up inside me.
“Don’t worry Mikaela, nothing bad is going to happen to you.” The boy promised no longer having his hands on my shoulders. I wanted to trust this guy, I really do. But my instincts were screaming to not go through those doors.
“Oh by the way, my name is Rei, just in case we run into each other again.” He smiled reaching out to shake my hand. I figured this was my chance to turn around and run from these insidious doors. However, I had completely forgotten about the annoyingly tall giant who was walking silently behind me the whole time. Before I had the chance to even turn my head to find an exit, he turned my head back forward, not saying a word. Megan gave an evil smirk as she opened the last door revealing only pitch blackness. There was nothing I could see that would give me the slightest hint of what I was about to walk through.
Megan was the first to go through the door and then Rei was second. I was supposed to be next but I kept my feet planted on the floor. “There’s no way in hell I’m going in there”
“I don’t have all day.” The giant grunted. I felt myself being lifted up from underneath my arms and carried forcefully through the door. The room was still very dark but there was a hint of a soft light illuminating from the wooden desks a few feet in front of me. I was able to see a mixture of men and women sitting down wearing a very professional attire with expensive designer brands.
Gazing at the mysterious crowd, I couldn’t make out what impression they had of me since none of them were smiling or frowning. They would look at me for a few seconds and then go back to taking notes. It felt like they were observing some odd animal or insect that they just discovered but also not wanted.
“Group A, you are dismissed. You may return back to class.” An older man and woman dressed in black came through a door that I didn’t even realize was even there. Instant relief dropped from my captures faces. Megan and the giant were the first to turn back to the door that we came from.
“Good luck Mikaela” Rei said giving me pat on the back and turned to catch up with his group. Once I heard the door closed from behind, my chest felt tight as I realized that everyone was staring at me all at once. “Mikaela Hernadez. Am I pronouncing that correctly? ” The man said as he took the empty chair that was right in the middle of the five desks that surrounded me. The man had a fairly pale complexion and the bluest eyes I had ever seen.
“Yeah...” I answered nervously my thoughts were rapidly coming to the conclusion that this was the Illuminate or place of human trafficking that was pretending to be a school.
’It’s not the Illuminate. Relax.’ Fred said shortly quickly answering my frantic thoughts. However, he never said it wasn’t human trafficking. How the fuck am I suppose to relax!
“I know this may seem scary and difficult to understand on what’s going on. Trust me, I don’t normally call this many people to talk to a future student of ours. I’m Headmaster John or some call me Father John. I won’t list everyones name in the room since they will have the chance to introduce themselves once you start classes” he continued to explain but it wasn’t registering in my head.
Did he just say I’m starting school?
’Yep. Congrats you have been accepted to Hogwarts...’ Fred said unenthusiastically.
“But I already started school at Western High. This doesn’t make sense” I said as I felt myself feeling light headed. This was happening way too fast.
“Mikaela, correct me If I am wrong. You have merged with a demon which he may have already made promises to make you the strongest being in the world.” The headmaster said his arms now folded staring down at me as if he just read my mind.
Really Fred, do you use all the same damn pitches with the people you merged with! I snapped trying speak to Fred through my thoughts without accidentally moving my lips.
’Baby, it aint like that.’
“He also promised to take me to Las Vegas.” I muttered thinking that may have been another one of his devil pitches.
“Well, I can’t say he’s not wrong. He can make you one of the most powerful beings but know whatever power he gives you, it is not without his benefit.” He said which I felt that I could have figured it out myself after spending only a few moments with Fred.
“Also, it is uncommon to have someone that has no experience with the paranormal nor a bloodline with spiritual abilities to be able to merge with an upper level demon without becoming fully possessed. That is why it is very urgent for you to attend the Paranorma Academy before you become a danger to yourself and others. Do we all agree?” Headmaster John said looking for confirmation of the people sitting around him. Everyone took a moment, glancing at one another and then eventually agreed either verbally or nodded their head to the terms
“Welcome to Paranorma, Miss Hernadez. We’ll have everything sorted for you tomorrow so you are ready for your first day. Dismissed” John smiled appearing to be happy to finish what felt like a quick meeting. “Now, if you go throughout that door, it will take you to the room that you’ll be staying at for now on” He pointed. "Barbra, will show you the way" A woman wearing black slacks and a white blouse came through the door instantly with a fake smile plastered on her face.
“But my family.”
“Your Aunt Sofia and Uncle Gustavo have been notified. They agreed that it would be best for you to stay under our custody due to the circumstance that almost occurred at the bridge. And also my deepest condolence, Miss Hernadez. No one should have died the way she did...” John began but then stopped seeing the confusion on my face.“Were you not aware of your mother’s passing, I am so-”
“No, I know she died but what do you mean she shouldn’t have died the way she did?” I emphasized trying to keep my voice from cracking. Thankfully, everyone had left as soon as they agreed for me to start this Hogwart shit of a school.
“I’m so sorry, Mikaela. I thought with the news broadcasting for hours and everything with social media outlet happens fast, I thought it would have been brought to your attention by now” He apologized his voice also sounding a bit nervous and regretful causing me to feel even greater concern.
“I haven’t. My phone has been dead since yesterday night and I’ve been dealing with a condescending demon for hours” I said feeling myself growing more irritated as this Priest took his time in spitting the information out.
’Don’t be rude’ Fred joked.
‘Shut-up Fred. Not. The. Time.’ I snapped coldly. I was not in the mood to deal with his half-hearted jokes trickling into my thoughts.
The headmaster not wasting time, his words were soft but were sharper than a knife creating a world of guilt and sadness that I had thought I buried for the moment, resurfaced all at once.
“Someone had burned your mother alive.”
