Chapter IV: The Mysterious Dream and The Key
One night, Kota is dreaming. In his dream, he wakes up to find Akiko in front of him wearing a white dress, and on him, also a white suit, pants, and black shoes, and in a snap, a mysterious hand drags her away from him. Another scene erupts again but she is no longer there. After a while, the alarm clock chimes and he wakes up. As he wakes up, he wonders what was that and if that would have a meaning.
Arriving at school, he encounters Asahi and while walking to the classroom, he tells him about his dream last night. In the classroom, while talking her friends, Akiko notices something strange about Kota at that time. At lunchbreak, Asahi goes over to Kota and as Masashi, Haru, and Satou approach, he tells them about his dream. Akiko also arrives and hears this. Kota then explains to her about the dream, and after he narrates, she has also something to tell her. She recalls as she was falling down on him and like knocked him out. As she's about to get up, Kota also gets up and accidentally kisses her on the lips. Then a hand drags her away from him. Kota asks her also of what they were wearing. For Akiko, she was wearing a white dress while Kota was wearing an all-white attire. To his surprise, it is the same dream Kota had. The group is in shock to find that there is a possibility of conjoint dreams. Kota and Akiko look at each other and blush afterwards. The classroom door opens and the teacher is back for the afternoon session.
The class is over again and while at the dike again, she speaks to Kota again about the dream and frankly did the same thing again to him like the last time. At night they text each other again and Kota wants to point some possible meanings to that dream like a friend of one of them will most likely to pull her away from him however, Akiko doesn't pay attention to this.
Christmas is over and they simply greeted each other. Although he doesn't have something to give her on Christmas, he wants to give her something valuable. His mom then tells him that they're going to Kyoto. He arrives at a busy station together with his family and travels to a shrine. When he is going through the souvenirs, he finds a silver key which has the symbols for Akiko's name which is very coincidentally.
Back to school and as he is going to give it to Akiko, he notices that Asahi has a toy key but with a different design. However, he notes that he haven't told him about the key nor Asahi was just exploring his attic and found it by accident and thus giving it to her. Why did he bring a key coincidentally on the exact date? At lunchtime, Kota has the opportunity to give it to Akiko.
As she receives it, she is delighted with it. Nobody had ever given her a key so unique. She thanks Kota and then kisses him on the cheeks. From that very day, Akiko wears the key.
In Kota's mind, he reveals that there are symbolisms behind the key. First, the key will give her confidence in her studies and it is a representation of her name. Second, it is a symbol of their memories. But one of the greatest irony of the key, is that it will open a locked heart. With the key embedded with her name, it will open someone's heart, either comfortingly or romantically. If she lost herself, the key will remind her and through it, she will find herself again.
At home, Kota thinks about the key and suddenly, a notification rings and Akiko texted him. As the conversation about memes and the academics plunge deeper and deeper, Akiko opens up like what if they would still be friends for many years and what if they would be together in the future. Kota makes a point that education would be first and love will come after since they are still young. But of course, he asks her if it doesn't hurt her and she replies that it doesn't bother her, but as long as he is still by her side.
Akiko also says at some point that if one of them would be with another man or woman, they would still have each other inside their heart. Kota agrees and says good night to her since they will be having a quiz for tomorrow.
She then replies, "Goodnight Love!" to him.
As he is about to turn off the phone, Kota doesn't believe what he is seeing right now.
"Wait, what! Did she just--- I'mma check again to see if my eyes defied me or not.", says Kota.
So, he asks Akiko about that and she jokes like what if she is being serious, Kota blushes and Akiko replies goodnight to him again but this time, with sweet dreams. Kota also replies back and then turns off the phone and goes to sleep smiling and at the other end, Akiko also appears to be doing the same.
