This book was, in my opinion, dry. I liked the idea of The Scorpio Races, but the events weren’t exactly the most interesting. The title of the book suggests there are races, which indeed there are, but the actual race only takes up eleven pages out of the four-hundred and four total pages.
One of the main characters, Puck Connolly, has to participate in the Scorpio Races or else she will lose her home along with her two brothers. The races are a race between caipall uisce (carnivorous water horses). Whoever wins gets a giant cash prize. However, Puck chooses to ride on her own horse, Dove, who is not a capall uisce. When she enters the races, she becomes the first woman to compete in them. Sean Kendrick, the other main character, has spent almost his whole life working with caipall uisce, and he is a returning champion in the Scorpio Races, riding on Corr, a capall uisce. Although Sean has been working for the same family for practically a decade, they will not sell Corr to him. After pleading to buy Corr, Benjamin Malvern, Sean’s boss, finally agrees to sell Corr to him if he wins the next races. Puck and Sean’s worlds collide when they meet on the cliff overlooking the beach and start training together. When the day of the races arrive, Sean promises to stay next to Puck during the competition. The races start, but Puck and Dove get attacked by a capall uisce and its rider, separating Sean and Puck. They eventually find each other, but Sean’s enemy, Mutt Malvern, attacks Puck along with Dove on his capall uisce. Sean, on Corr, protects them, but gets injured and has to stay behind. Mutt’s horse tries to trample over Sean, but Corr shields him. His brave action leads to his leg being broken, ultimately ruining his running/racing career. Meanwhile, Puck crosses the finish line first and wins, but she is only worried about Sean. She later confronts Benjamin Malvern and demands he sell Corr to Sean.
It’s a long summary, I know. There’s no great way to explain why I didn’t completely enjoy The Scorpio Races. I guess it’s because each day was pretty predictable and boring. Puck trains with Dove, Sean works with Corr. Maybe I just wanted more action. The caipall uisce and human names were also very, very difficult to keep track of, although it’s probably because I read it over the span of four-ish months.
But hey, if you like gore and man-eating horses, give it a shot! Maggie Stiefvater is an amazing author—her writing style is great—I just didn’t particularly enjoy this book.
