It wasn't often we had a large gathering with most of the townspeople here. And if someone didn't come the whole town would know about it. The women had spread the word about visitors the same day they arrived I had heard. The next day they decided they were going to have a welcoming party. It showed just how unnatural visitors were in our town, but no one really minded besides the girl. The men that came with her didn't seem to mind by the way they were smiling while interacting with the others. From the minute she stepped down from the wagon she was the center of attention. All eyes landed on her, but no one wanted to introduce themselves because of the crossed expression she was wearing.
I was a little jealous of the man who got to hold her hand while helping her down. This girl had her brown wavy hair pulled into a ponytail and her tan, brown caramel skin glowed as the sun beamed on her. It was no wonder the whole town was fascinated by her. She was beautiful. She stayed near to her group in the beginning, and I noticed how she was trying to hide behind her companions. The only reason she left them was because she saw the desert table. The enjoyment I saw on her face made me chuckle. The way she ran over to the pie section was extremely adorable.
When the crowd started to flock around her, her mood changed drastically. She was irritated that much could be seen, but no one really noticed because of their excitement. She, on the other hand, looked upset at the fact that she had been taken away from the desert table. I watched as they held her captive for about 30 minutes asking her questions. It was entertaining to watch; she was just sitting staring towards the table the entire time.
When they finally released her, she hurriedly stormed her way over there. Or shall I say here. I had made my way near the desert table as soon as I saw them drag her away. I found the nearest tree and sat back and relaxed while I waited. She took hold of the plate rather fast and continued to pile one of every slice from each pie on it. She was committed I'd give her that. I heard her whisper something to the pie. I couldn't exactly understand what, but it was amusing. As she was about to take a bite out of the pie I said, "Do you always talk to your food?" I already knew she was going to be annoyed when she heard me. And I was right, I bet if she could, she would have murdered me right where I stood. I smiled brightly in response.
"Do you always interrupt someone when they're trying to eat?" Her voice sent shivers through me. I enjoyed the battering and chuckled a little because she wasn't messing around about her pie. That didn't help the situation as she seemed more upset that I didn't answer. She was visibly shaking with anger. From her expression she was making it was saying something along the lines of "Answer me you fool." I straightened up and asked, "You're serious?" She nodded and that sent me into a frenzy. I burst out laughing even harder. Once I finished, I decided to help her out with her pie choices.
"Well, I would try the apple. In my opinion, it's the best one." I couldn't help myself from stepping closer. I was drowning in her hazel eyes, and it felt like there was no turning back the closer I got. I smoothly took the spoon from the tight clasp she had on it and took a piece of the pie off the plate. If I wasn't too busy trying to balance it with my uncoordinated self, I would have swept the strand of hair that was blowing in her face behind her ear. I put it in front of her mouth with my other hand underneath it in case it fell. Her eyes narrowed like they did every so often she had been speaking to me and I could tell she was trying to decide on whether or not she was going to eat it. After a minute of thinking she finally decided she would. I determined she wasn't that difficult to deal with.
"How was it?" I was pleased and proud of myself. I was sure that she was going to like this one better than the rest.
She thought about it before saying, "You were right. It's actually really good." Hopefully, that got me into her good books. What I didn't expect was for her to put her hand on my arm. I stopped breathing from the shock and then realized I needed oxygen, so I almost choked trying to breath in again. The mischievous in her lovely eyes made me feel anxious, which was strange because I usually don't get nervous, but then again, I don't go around feeding girls that much...or ever. And I hadn't really expected her to flirt back. I thought she would have just told me to leave her alone. But all I could feel was her soft polished fingers touching my arm. I was frozen as I faintly heard the words, "Thank you." I finally came out of the daze when I felt her release my arm and saw her walking away. That was also when I realized I had just completely embarrassed myself in front of the prettiest girl I had ever seen. I wanted to punch myself a thousand times over again. I had missed a valuable opportunity to...to...what was I going to do? She wasn’t going to come back anytime soon, so it wasn't like I would have another opportunity to talk to her again.
To deal with my failure I went to the table furthest from where she was and wallowed in my embarrassment. And there was a lot of it. I laid down on the bench and listened to the music playing for the next hour. Everyone was dancing, eating, and enjoying their time together. Meanwhile, I was alone. My best friend, Hayes, had decided to go visit the palace's city because they needed a break from the small-town life. I asked him to bring me too, but his family refused. I think his mother's exact words were "The orphan boy needs to figure out his life himself, not be a thorn in your side." I could feel her love for me all way from here. It was on fire for me, as in the love she had for me was burning off of fumes and ashes right now. Ah, deep down I really think she liked me, though. At least, she used to before my father and mother had died.
They'd been coming home that night. They were stopped and it was assumed they were robbed. They were left for dead, and their belongings were ransacked. I got left the house and everything else that belonged to them, that was a year ago. I spent most of my time with Hayes working small jobs with him that people needed help with, but his mother didn't seem to like that. He was all I had left after my parents. Him and my grandpa. It seemed like even he was being taken away. My grandpa had asked me to come live with him for a while now. I had recently received a letter from him saying that the screams were so loud that...wait...screams...why were there screams?
