"Maya...Can you please watch my bag? I want to go speak to someone. It'll only be a minute."
I was gathering my courage to do something scary. Well...maybe scary only to someone who is insanely worried and sad about the boy she likes despising her. After days and days of icy silence and stormy fights it was about time I faced him and told him that treating me like dirt was not alright. I had rehearsed what I would say a million times in my head but that didn't make it easier.
His group of friends stood chatting next to the library. Veena looked like she was in the seventh heaven of delight about something.
"He mentioned he was going to complain to the teachers and her parents." She chuckled. "It's about time everyone found out she's a creeper."
I stopped in my tracks, feeling cold. If Mathew did that...
"Veena..." I called out in a sudden surge of anger. "Why don't you guys start saying things to people's face instead of behind their backs."492Please respect copyright.PENANAtbaAlBmsvT
Laughter broke out in the little group. Veena walked right up to me and smirked.
"You are a desperate creep and stalker who just won't let go of a boy who hates you.There. I said it to your face."
The words stung. I didn't like Veena but it still hurt to hear that people thought of me this way.
"Mathew said he had something important to do and ran off. So you can go off somewhere else and stop hanging out here waiting for him with eager puppy dog eyes."492Please respect copyright.PENANA5zheygtISV
And I left. Anger was bubbling inside me. I wanted to slap her but I stopped myself. What use was there getting to more fights.
When I got back Maya was zipping up my bag.
"Sorry..." She said pleasantly. "My shirt sleeve somehow got stuck in it."
"It's alright." I said automatically.
I'll see him tomorrow. I'll speak to him.
Little did I know then that Ophelia had no tomorrow. And that my best friend was lying to my face.
And...Mathew left me a message that I never got to read when I was alive.
To be continued...
