"That..." Maya looked as if she were slapped. There was no doubt that Mathew hit close to the truth. "I..."
"Was she alive when you found her?" His voice was more firm that I would have expected it to. Almost immediately I put that thought out of my head. That kind of thinking...Always desperately trying to find reasons to believe he cared about me...That brought me no end of trouble when I was alive. I shouldn't buy into it now. Not when it doesn't matter anymore.
The dead cannot love.
The dead surely cannot be loved. Especially by a boy who cared not for her when she was alive.
"She was dead!!!!" Maya's furious voice broke through my thoughts. "She was dead when I found her!!!"
And I had to believe her. I could almost feel the unspoken "How dare you!!!"
Then...
Everyone was listening at this point. Some with ghoulish excitement like Veena. Others with plain shock. Some of them sad. I wondered if any of them regretted the way they treated me. Even my meager friend circle had drifted away after my fights with Mathew. Only Maya remained...
But then again...Why did it matter?
It's not like I'll be speaking to them again.
There was another thing that mattered more now.
If not Maya, who was the witness? Who had Maya's song recorded as the ring tone.
Who actually left me there to die?
To be continued...
