It was the day after the disastrous fight with Mathew. Everyone was talking about me. The creepy girl who wrote weird love poems in her diary. My friends, except Maya, had greeted me coldly, moving away from me as I tried to talk to them. Only Adrian lingered for a while, trying to say something but failing.
At the end of the school day, he came over to me. He looked pale and more than a little hurt.
"Why did you do that, Lee?" He asked. "You know that..."
"YES I KNOW HE'S WITH VEENA." I snapped. Adrian looked taken aback. He took a deep breath and spoke again.
"Lee...They are all making fun of you. I just..."
"You wish you had a better friend? Someone who wasn't the creepy girl of the class?"
"No!" Adrian exclaimed. "You're one of my best friends Lee..I just don't want to see you hurt. I don't want anyone making fun of you."
"It's kind of too late for that, Adrian."
"It's not." Adrian sat on the chair next to me. "Let Mathew go, Lee. Tell him he's a jerk and you wouldn't ever love a jerk like him."
My eyes filled with tears. I wish it had been that easy. That telling him and myself that I stopped caring anymore would make all the heartache go away...
"I can't.." I said slowly.
I heard Adrian sigh. He smiled sadly and said. "He won't ever return your feelings...You know that, right?"
"I know."
"And yet..."
"I can't make my feelings go away. It's stupid I know..."
Adrian sighed again and got up. "Sometimes you can't let go. It's not stupid."
He left me sitting there and went out of the classroom.
We never spoke again.
To be continued...
