"Caden... Caden! Get up, recruit!"
Caden was startled, jumped up, the table slipped under his feet, and he fell to the ground.
"Hahaa... I'm sorry, Caden, you slept like the dead." Merill helped him up.
"Where... where is Amelia?"
"I've already escorted her to the bakery."
"Oh, thanks."
"All right, Caden, will we go now?"
"Yes."
They went downstairs and the pub was beginning to fill up.
"It's filled here all day, right?" Caden laughed.
"It really is," Merill said, looking at the elf that led Caden and Amelia into the room yesterday.
"So he's up? Here's something for you, boy," the elf smiled and gave Caden a dark bread and cheese.
"Thanks... uh... and what is it?" Caden asked shyly, as he had never seen the dark bread.
"Hahaa... food, Caden," Merill patted his shoulder.
"Where are you going today, Merill?" the elf asked softly.
"That's secret, El, top-secret," Merill laughed and walked out with Caden.
"What will we deal with today?" Caden asked.
"We have something interesting today, murder," Merill said enthusiastically.
"Murder? And who did they kill?"
"That's the secret, they killed one of the Wardens."
"What? How?" Caden dismayed and mounted his horse.
"They say he was poisoned, but someone was talking about magic. But that is unlikely," Merill explained when they were riding.
"And can we deal with that?" Caden wondered.
"Until the role of magic is proven, yes. It happened in our area, after all," Merill answered.
"Do you think they hired a killer for him?"Caden asked.
"Probably, no one else than mages can gain anything from the death of the Warden," Merill nodded.
They both arrived in front of a small house, jumped off their horses and tied them. In front of the house, a Warden was waiting for them, it was the one who led Caden to the city.
"Finally, it took you so long. Ah, boy, did you really join them?" warden looked at Caden in astonishment.
"Come, come." The warden led both of them to the room on the second floor of the house where the dead warden's body laid.
"You left him here all the time like that?" Caden didn't understand.
"The crime scene must not be manipulated until it is properly inspected, Caden," Merill explained.
"Hmm, no injuries, stab wounds, nothing. It must have been poisoning," Merill looked at the body.
"Bravo, you confirmed what the whole town already knows," the Warden said ironically.
"We need to know who he was associating with lately, his name and the cases he was working on," Merill told him.
"Eryl Flyr."
"Emm... And?" Merill asked.
"I can't tell you more."
"You can not be serious? How do we find out who could kill him?" Merill asked.
"I'm sorry, but it's not my problem," Warden replied.
"So what are you here for?" Merill asked hostilely.
“My job is to keep an eye on the crime scene and make sure that magic has no presence here. By the way, if you could, by chance, find evidence of the connection of magic to this case, report it immediately."
"So... will you leave now?" Merill asked.
"No."
"And what are you going to do here?"
"Supervise the search of the crime scene."
"Can we look into this closet?" Merill asked.
"No."
"Okay, so let's go. Let's go outside, Caden," Merill led Caden outside.
"What was that?" Caden said in confusion.
"Bastard. How can we find out anything about this like that?" Merill was angry.
"Well... What do we do now?" Caden asked.
"Don't worry, I have one ace up in my sleeve."
They both mounted their horses and left. They came to a half-ruined house on the edge of the city.
"Here it is, let's get in." Merill jumped off his horse and entered the house, Caden was behind him.
Obviously, the lean guy sitting in his chair wasn't pleased with their visit.
"Fuck! The guards are here!" he shouted and tried to escape, but Merill ran to him and threw him on the ground.
"Don't you know me?"
"Shit, Merill. What do you want?"
"Call up Gorej," Merill whispered.
"Ehh... Gorej! Merill... is here. "
A moment later, a pudgy man with some emaciated cronies walked down the old stairs.
"You?!" Caden shouted as he saw him.
"Shit! So he's at the guard!” the fat man turned and wanted to escape.
"Gorej, if you don't want to get your fat pig face smashed again, come here immediately!" Merill exclaimed as if he was calling on a disobedient child.
The fat man took a deep breath, turned and slowly walked down the stairs. "Okay, but keep him away from me!"
"Hmm... so you know each other?" Merill laughed.
"What do you want, Merill?"
"Can't I just go talk to an old friend?" Merill smiled.
Gorej swallowed loudly and fear was visible in his eyes.
"We heard that there was a new fish in your pond," Merill walked slowly past Gorej and his party, making them even more afraid.
"Merill, listen, what do you want to hear?!"
"In our area, someone, let's say, on a high level, was poisoned. And I want to know who did it!" Merill shouted.
"So... so poisoner, poison, okay, okay. I haven't heard of anyone like that yet, but I'm sure I'll find it out for you!"
"But, Gorej, this is not enough for me. I need answers now!" Merill grabbed Gorej by the neck and almost lifted him from the ground when one of his cronies spoke. "I... I know about somebody, he's hiding in the woods outside the city. It's said that he is a dark elf or something," he stammered.
"Shit!" Merill released Gorej, who fell on the ground, grabbed Caden and ran out.
"We have to go to Herb's farm, fast!" Merill shouted at Caden and mounted his horse.
They both got out of town.
They reached the farm, it was getting dark. Merill jumped off his horse and ran into Mr Beag's hut.
"Mr Beag! Mr Beag!" Merill shouted as he saw Herbert Beag in his bed, with a dagger in his neck.
Red eyes were shining beside him in the corner.
There was a soft voice heard, "Shhh..."
