"Got it," I said as I blew off my N-Life and put it in place. I closed my eyes as the sensual over-ride took me away. For a few seconds everything was black. Then a message flashed across my field of vision: NEW USER DETECTED! MATCHING YOU WITH A CLASS: YOU ARE NOW AN ASSASSIN! SPAWN WITH DAGGER, TWO THROWIING KNIVES, SHORT SWORD, ONE HUNDRED GOLD PEICES, TEN DAYS OF TRAVEL RATIONS, CLOTH ARMOR. FIRST TIME PREPERATIONS COMPLETE. GOOD LUCK!
There was a brilliant flash of blue and I found myself standing in the middle of a bustling medieval village. I looked behind me and saw an angelic fountain with a silver plaque on it that said: "Resurrection shrine,” As well as other silver plaques with names on them.
I looked down and saw a brown leather bag. I opened it and found that it contained my starting equipment. Then I realized I was wearing Ezio’s robes from Assassin’s Creed II. I'd been cosplaying at an online convention the last time I’d been on BRYZ and I'd been dressed as Ezio and I guess the robes had stuck around.
I equipped my weapons, attaching my dagger and throwing knives to my belt. I slung the sword over my shoulder so the sheath rested beneath my short cape with the handle sticking out over my shoulder. Then I equipped my cloth armor under my robes. I slung the bag over my shoulder and walked over to the fountain. I then waited a second. Sure enough an alert popped up in front of me: "ONE NEW MESSSAGE."
The message contained the coordinates from Seb and instructions on how to use the teleportation rune in the resurrection shrine. I waded into the fountain, the water of which was about ankle high, and placed my hand on a green gem in one of the angel's hands. It opened up a map of the world. Technically you could only travel to resurrection shrines you had already been to. However, you could also visit ones that your friends had visited. I quickly selected a shrine close to the coordinates Sebastien had sent me and willed myself to go there. instantly the world faded out.
I reappeared standing beside another resurrection shrine. This one in the middle of a forest. I quickly opened my in-game map and input the coordinates Seb had sent me. The location was a few minutes walk away at the edge of the forest. I sighed in resignation and started walking.
After a minute of walking my boredom was alleviated by my stumbling upon a group of five goblins. I quickly stepped into some bushes and watched them. They were standing around the carcas of what looked like a pig. I decided that this was the perfect opportunity to level up. I quickly drew one of my throwing knives and threw it at one of the goblins. I then threw my second knife. Both knives hit deep into the two goblins killing them quickly.
The remaining three goblins charged me. Two armed with stone hatchets, one with a spear with a spearhead at each end of the shaft.
The first goblin reached me and swung its hatchet in a blow that if it connected would have split my skull from top to bottom. I spun aside, slashing with my dagger at the same time. The goblin’s throat began pouring blood from the slit I’d cut in it. The goblin fell and I turned my attention to the second. It swung its hatchet at me and I rolled under it. Coming up in a crouch and pushing my dagger into its stomach.
I pushed the body off my blade. Two down. One to go.
The third goblin proved to be smarter then the other two. It used its spear to keep me at a distance while probing with one of the points for a weak spot in my defence.
For a second, I was stumped as to how to defeat a simple goblin. I didn’t have time to draw my sword so I was at a disadvantage. Then I realized I could throw my dagger and still do damage. I waited till the goblin lunged with its spear, then, before it could draw the spear back, I threw the dagger. It didn’t even spin. It just imbedded itself up to the hilt between the goblin’s eyes.
I watched as the goblin, a confused look on its face, fell to the ground. Its spear falling from its lifeless hands.
An alert flashed across my field of vision: “YOU LEVELED UP! LEVEL 0-1! GAIN A SKILL POINT FOR YOUR TECH TREE! TOTAL (1).”
I swiped my hand down and opened my stats. I selected skills and instantly a massive globe of stars expanded around me. Glowing in different colors. I selected one that was glowing yellow: Splinter, read the caption. Throw knife or other weapon at target and then drive in with blow from hand or foot. Penetrates most normal armor and deals high damage.
I tapped it twice and the star changed color to green.
“SKILL LEARNED!” Popped up another alert. “YOU ARE NOW A BLOODSPILLER ASSASSIN!”
I retrieved my weapons then looked at one of the goblin’s bodies. A menu popped up listing the items the goblin had. As well as a button with a label saying “LOOT” above it. I tapped it and then the goblin’s body slowly sank into the ground. I then repeated the process with the other goblins. Once I was done I had all the goblins’ weapons and armor plus a small pouch full of silver.
I opened my inventory and picked the spear. I selected it and it appeared in my hand. It was made all of one piece of metal with a spearhead at each end of the shaft. I tapped it with my finger thoughtfully and was surprised to see an information window open. I quickly skimmed through the information. Charnen Spear. Attack Damage twelve, and a small section listing the spears creation process and its first owner’s deeds. Blah blah blah.
I closed the window and stood up. I was late for meeting up with Matt and Seb.
