She pulled up to the massive mansion that laid in front of her. Sure it was impressive, yet quite overcompensating. Many men had houses larger than they could ever use the space for but it made it much easier to hide when their wives came home. In fact, Mabel had just spent the night with a married man. The wife and kids were gone and she enjoyed a night of free food, weed, and mediocre sex. Mabel blushed and pulled her car up behind Sarah's.
From what Sarah had told her, the man that was allowing the Porters to stay at the mansion wasn't half bad himself. Of course, her sister had to be more subtle with what she said but she knew that 'not half bad' translated to a nice piece of ass. Apparently he had an attractive girlfriend roaming around the house with him but that wouldn't be a problem - it never was.
Mabel fixed her blouse so that it would hang a bit above her skirt and show off a bit of skin. She wasn't dressed so bad to look like a tramp but still dressed in a way to get the men to look at her. She was hoping that the owner would be the one to open the door for her. With her luck, however, it would be her nephew or niece opening it.
She took the door knocker and banged it against the large mahogany doors, hearing the whole house seemingly vibrate. Mabel waited for a moment and looked back to the trees behind her. She loved the vast line of trees but she preferred the beaches of California any day. The thought of the night she went to the beach at dark with first boyfriend filled her with joy. They went skinny dipping in the ocean, had a few beers, and one thing led to another and, before she knew it, she was in a hospital bed giving birth to her daughter, Irene.
The boyfriend didn't stick around for long but Mabel would never let her little girl go... at least, not intentionally.
Mabel swayed her eyes to the right and saw Irene standing in the trees, holding a flower in her hand. She waved at Mabel and gestured for her to follow her.
"Irene?" Mabel said with a shaky voice. The little girl stood still and soon began coughing up blood. Mabel began shaking vigorously as her little girl fell to the ground and began gasping for air. Despite being so far away from Mabel, she could hear every sound so vividly.
"Irene!" Mabel screamed. She began making her way down the steps when the doors behind her swung open.
"Mabel!" Edward said happily. "We're so happy you could come."
Mabel looked at him, shocked at how happy he was. She couldn't even remember the last time that Edward smiled, nevertheless smile with his teeth. Perhaps Sarah whipped him into shape. She looked back to the woods and saw nothing but some birds flying over them.
It's in your head, Mabel.
She looked back to Edward and regained her composure. "Hi Edward," She said, uncertain as how to talk to this new man.
Edward widened the door and let her inside. She stepped in seeing how grand everything truly was.
"My goodness. This place looks much better than the crumbling pile of shit I saw outside."
Edward laughed and closed the door, creating a large popping noise in the main hallway. Come to think of it, had Mabel ever heard the man laugh? At least, had she ever heard the man laugh when it wasn't sarcastic. What happened to him?
"Yes, the place still needs a lot of touch up but its all coming together. Gabriel and I think it should be done and presentable by late December - early November."
"Interesting," Mabel said. She wanted to be sarcastic, be snarky, yet she felt like she couldn't. She didn't know if this was just some kind of trick or prank that Edward was pulling but it seemed to genuine for her to act rudely. If she was being honest with herself, it was rather making her uncomfortable. She had grown use to being able to be a bitch to her sister's husband.
"May!" Her sister said from the top of the stairs. She still had a cordless curling iron in her hair. Sarah quickly made her way down the stairs and wrapped her free arm around Mabel. "I'm so glad you could come."
Mabel looked over to Edward who was still smiling. Now it just felt creepy. She wanted asshole, socially isolated, Edward to come back. "Me too. I need to know everything that's been going on with you."
"Well ladies, I've got to get back to it. Mabel, please feel free to have any food you want and Sarah will show you around," Edward kissed Sarah, passionately. "I'll see you after work."
He began walking back to the stairs when Sarah said, "I'll see you then. Oh, Edward..."
Edward looked back at her.
"I'm going to be grabbing some coffee with some coworkers after work today, if you wouldn't mind picking up the kids?"
"Oh, I can grab them," Mabel said. "I need to see how my niece and nephew are doing."
"Perfect," Edward said. "Thank you Mabel."
He walked up the stairs, to a hallway, and left Mabel and Sarah to themselves. Mabel smiled at Sarah, ready to gossip. "Sarah, you have to tell me what happened."
"What do you mean?" Sarah asked.
"I mean, what happened to Edward? Are you beating him with a belt or something? How did you make Mr. Grump Ass such a nice guy?"
Sarah looked at Mabel with a puzzled look. "I... I didn't do anything May. I think Edward really just needed this place. It's been so good for all of us, May. I just... I've never felt happier. I'm sure Edward feels the same."
"But Sarah, he use to hate your guts. Moving homes doesn't just change all of that."
Sarah smiled and laughed awkwardly. "May, what are you talking about? We've had our fights but we've always loved each other. I just think this new home and his job have helped him to settle down and really just enjoy life."
Now Mabel's expression was puzzled. Sarah and her family moved only two months ago. How could she have so easily forgotten all the years of Edward ignoring her, verbally abusing her, and perhaps even physically abusing her. Sarah said that Edward would never hit her but Mabel wasn't convinced. He was an alcoholic and an asshole but, now, he was something else. As a matter of fact, maybe Sarah was something else. What would their children be like?
"You must show me Edward's boss," Mabel said, changing the subject.
"Oh yes of course," Sarah said. "But I'll give you the tour first. Gabriel is in his office right now and has asked us to give him some quiet while he's in there."
"Do you think he has some secrets in there? Maybe some drugs? Some security cameras watching you in the bathroom?" Mabel eyes brightened at her next thought. "Maybe a sex dungeon for all his kinks."
Sarah snorted and laughed. "I don't think Gabriel has any of that. Plus, if he were to have a sex dungeon, he'd be the only one in it. He doesn't even allow his girlfriend in there. I think he just has a lot of work he needs to get done. After all, he is the boss of several sawmills, hotels and motels, and some smaller stores in Matthewsville."
"Well, sissy, every man has their secrets." She thought back to how strange Sarah and Edward were acting. "And every family."
"Well you may be right. He might be up there snorting a line of cocaine right now."
"Oh, I would very much like to join him."
Both Mabel and Sarah giggled. "I'm sure you would."
"You wouldn't?"
"My days of that are long past. My smoking has already rubbed off on my son. I don't need my children knowing what I did in my youth."
"You don't want them to know about all the parties? All the drugs? All the men?"
Sarah's face seemed to have become less joyful and more serious. "No, I don't want them to know about any of that. My son already knows enough as it is."70Please respect copyright.PENANATIhNe0Ge0i

Mabel realized that she was pushing into a sensitive subject. "Well, I for one would like to go and meet Mr. Gabriel and snort a line of coke with him."70Please respect copyright.PENANAK6Pzy0Zabj

Sarah giggled once more and waved her hand. "Come on, let me finish my hair and I'll show you around the place."
Mabel smiled and followed behind her before she noticed that her ear started ringing. Sarah was speaking but her ear focused on some kind of sound being pitched on the hallway to her left. At the far end of it was a little girl but this one didn't look like Irene. Then, immediately behind the little girl was a woman. She slowly stretched her hand out and pointed towards Mabel, sending goosebumps across Mabel's body.
"May?" Sarah said, halfway up the stairs.
Mabel looked to her and back to the hallway. Of course, the woman and girl were gone.
"Coming," Mabel said.
She continued following Sarah down the top right hallway until they came to a doorway on the left. Mabel noticed that the walls were breathing and children's laughter was echoing inside of them. She needed to take her pills because she knew that there was something wrong with this place.
