I woke to a very loud, obnoxious ringtone.
I winced immediately, curling in on myself.
After growing more and more annoyed, I finally grumbled and picked up the phone.
“Hello…?” I murmured groggily.
There was static on the other line.
I sat up then, rubbing my eye. “Hello?”
Finally… a voice came through, “Emma…?”
I gazed up immediately, brows drawing together. “Lizzy?”
“Emma…” she whispered, “Emma, you were right….”
“What…?” I responded.
“Pierce…” she said quietly, voice shaking. “He tried to protect me… but… but I think he’s gone. I can’t find him.”
Panic brimmed inside me. “Wait… Lizzy, where are you?”
“I… I don’t know,” she whispered. “I think I’m in a forest.”
“A forest?”
“Yeah…” she whispered.
I stood immediately, brushing down my skirt and slipping on my shoes. “Are you in pain?”
“Yes…” she said then.
“Are you hurt?” I questioned, rushing out the door.
“Yes… Twilight… he shot me.”
I rushed out the front door then, leaving the door open when I ran straight into the woods across from my house. “Where did he shoot you, Lizzy?”
Keep calm… don’t panic. I wouldn’t be able to think straight then.
“Emma…” she whispered, voice cracking, “I don’t think I can make it. I’m… I’m so sorry.”
I kept running, losing my composure. “Where did he shoot you?!”
“In my stomach…” she said then, making tears fill my eyes. “I think… I think he hit an artery.”
“Stay on the phone with me,” I demanded.
“Emma…” she said quietly, voice shaking, “don’t find me. He will hurt you, too.”
“I already lost Vix and dad,” I responded. “I’m not losing you, too.”
Her voice just shook.
“Do you see anything around you?” I demanded, continuing to run. “What do you see?”
She was quiet for a moment. “Uhm… there’s a tree. It has carvings in it. It looks like…” she paused, “I can’t see the writing, my vision’s blurry.”
“What kind of tree?” I questioned, throat burning with tears.
“Aspen…” she said then.
I knew where she was.
“Stay on the phone,” I demanded, “I’m almost there.”
“Emma…” she said quietly, “I can’t hold the phone up much longer.”
“Stay on the phone!” I cried.
“It’s… it’s okay, Emma…” she said gently. “I called the police already.”
“They won’t do shit!” I sobbed. “Twilight isn’t human, Emma!”
Her breath just shook. “What…?”
“He isn’t human,” I said shakily. “I’m almost there! Hold on tightly!”
“Emma…” she said then, voice cracking again, “I can’t….”
And suddenly I heard a loud thud.
“Lizzy,” I said then, running faster. “LIZZY!”
But she was silent.
I just urged myself forward, rushing faster until I made it.
I immediately scrambled to a stop, eyes rounding in horror.
Elizabeth was on the forest floor, eyes wide as her face remained pale.
Her cheeks were stained in tears, blood devouring her white tank top and the top of her jeans.
He hands were set in front of her, still and unmoving.
I rushed over to her immediately. “Lizzy!”
She didn’t respond.
I shoved her onto her back, shaking her violently. “Wake up! Wake up!”
Her body was limp… like a doll… like… like she was never alive in the first place.
I pressed my hands to her chest, starting to do chest pumps.
Her body just bounced at the action, not responding.
I leaned down and pressed my mouth to hers, trying to give her air.
Her lungs rejected it immediately.
I leaned back up, shaking her as tears slipped from my eyes. “Wake up! WAKE UP!”
And that’s when I saw it… her eyes.
The light in them was gone. It was just pale…white…lifeless.
She was unresponsive… she was…
No.
I screamed in agony, fisting my hair in my hands as I closed my eyes tightly.
My tears dripped onto her shoulders, and I screamed again, ripping some of the strands out.
“WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?!” I screeched. “WHY?!”
The birds just scrambled away into the sky at my words.
“WHY?!” I screamed. “WHY?! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?!”
My questions trailed off into sobs, and I started crying, loudly, tears streaming down my cheeks.
I set my head on her chest then, sobbing into her bloodstained shirt.
