Jase’s eyes were on me.
I stared down at my notebook paper, scratching down incoherent scribbles scattered among the select bits of text from my teacher’s current lecture.
It was my version of doodling. Just drawing line-like figures.
Jase set his cheek in his hand, clearly amused at my sudden silence. “What are ya drawing?”
“Nothing,” I said automatically. Mainly because I was focusing on drawing as well as the teacher’s lecture.
His eyes scanned my papers, and he smirked. “Are those my tattoos?”
I paused mid-scribble, staring down at the line-like rune structures I had been doodling for the last hour.
And sure enough, they matched the structures of Jase’s exposed runes along his neck and upper chest.
“No,” I said then, “it’s not your runes.”
He smirked. “Liar.”
My cheeks burned a slight red. “No.”
“Liar.”
I just glared down at my paper, starting to fill in some of my doodles.

“Are you seriously suggesting that Twilight is a killer?!” Lizzy squealed in the kitchen. “How could you accuse him of something like that?! He and Pierce are innocent souls!”
I just set my hands on the counter, leaning onto them. “Lizzy, listen to me. I heard him say himself that he needed to rid of evidence of a murder!”
“Maybe he was talking about a vandalism crime!” she suggested, face growing red in anger. “I mean… he’s such a sweet soul! Why would he kill someone?”
I thought that, too. But I discretely remember myself thinking that he was too nice, and that there was something off about him.
I just sighed. “Lizzy, I need you to be careful. Pierce might be dangerous, too.”
She lost it then. “You have taken a new low! If anything, it’s JASE that’s the psychopath! He has scared me senseless for the last couple days!”
“Then why do you keep pushing me to him?” I said then.
“Because you look happy!” she said then.
But she finally paused and exhaled a breath. “Look… I don’t like fighting you like this, but I don’t like you accusing Pierce of being a cold-blooded murderer. But… I hear your concern and I will take it into consideration.”
I watched her numbly. “Lizzy.”
“I cannot believe you without evidence,” she stated then, eyes glowing in anger. “But I do appreciate your protection of me, sis. I will tread carefully, I promise. I just…” she sighed, “I’m very bright, too. I know I’m the party twin but seriously… I know when something is off, and I don’t sense it in Pierce, but I’ll keep an eye out.”
I just nodded. “That’s all I can ask of you, anyway.”
“Good night,” she said then, turning and starting to the stairs.
And seconds later, the doorbell rang.
I gazed up in shock, but Lizzy was already making her way up the stairs. Probably to let off some steam in her bedroom.
I padded over to the front door and unlocked it, peering out a small crack before opening it fully.
“What are you doing here?” I said then, narrowing my eyes.
Jase just gave me a small smirk. “I’m not allowed to come here out of good will?”
“No, you always want something,” I stated. “What do you want?”
He just glanced behind me when he heard my sister’s door slam. “Someone’s angry today.”
“I know,” I said then. “We got into a fight.”
“Oh?” he said, smirking. “Any screaming? Hair pulling? Slapping?”
“No.”
“A shame. What has the world come to now-a-days?”
I sighed and leaned against the doorframe. “What are you doing here? It’s late.”
“I wanted to make my signature pancakes,” he stated with a grin.
I could tell with this specific smile that he was lying… I could see the darkness swirling in his eyes like a dangerous pool of black.
I then stepped backward, catching the door. “Get out of here.”
He just pouted. “Kissy, kissy?”
“Out.” And I slammed the door in his face.
He let out a breath of laughter. “Rude!”
I just locked the door, walking further into the house.
