“He’s stalking me, Lizzy,” I told her uneasily, throwing my hands out as we walked down the main street. “How could he have known all this stuff?”
“Okay,” he said then, putting her hands out to stop me, “let’s say he is. Why is he stalking you?”
“I don’t know… he finds me attracting?”
“Well, that could be it, but why the hell would he go out of the way stalking you when you didn’t outwardly tell him to back off?” she asked me. “If he was obsessed with you, he wouldn’t start stalking you now… right?”
“I don’t think that’s how everyone works,” I said then, kicking a rock across the street. “It just doesn’t make sense. Why is he showing now of all places?”
“Maybe he was trying to gain the confidence to ask you out,” she added.
“No, that’s not in his personality,” I stated then, breathing slowly. “He has that stupid personality of over-confidence.”
And something told me it wasn’t feigned.
“Okay…” she said then, “you told me he was working that night. If he only had one break—at six—that you witnessed apparently while I was showering, how could he have possibly stalked you in that timeframe? It doesn’t match up.”
“Maybe he has a friend?” I said weakly.
“A fellow friend who is alright with stalking his own attraction?” she said in disbelief.
She was right… it did sound ridiculous. But… how else could he have known?
I sighed and rubbed my temples lazily.
“How about this,” she said then, stopping in front of me and catching my shoulders, “you ask him.”
I gazed up in annoyance. “How the hell am I supposed to bring that up?”
“How about, ‘Hey, Jase. Hi, how are you? Are you stalking me’?”
“He’ll dodge the question,” I stated then.
“How do you know?” she said then. “Have you asked him?”
I lowered my head.
No.
“Then I see no arguments,” she stated with a smile. “And—while we’re on the topic—we’re two minutes away from his work. Why don’t we go spy on him?”
That didn’t work well for me last time… he found me immediately.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” I said then.
“Laaaaaaame,” she said, drawing out the word as she tipped her head back. “You make me eternally depressed.”
I just shook my head and followed after her.
Ten minutes later, we found ourselves sitting in a small breakfast resturant, and I played with my fork lazily as Lizzy sat back into her chair.
“You looked tired,” she said then. “Did you sleep well last night?”
“No.”
In all honesty, I was up late with Jase at the arcade, and then I had to wake early for school today.
But she didn’t know that. I only told her about sneaking out to his work, not what happened later that night.
“Damn, you need sleeping pills, girl.”
I just set my head on the table.
After a moment of silence, she suddenly gasped and tapped my shoulder.
I looked up.
Her eyes were glistening in… fascination. “Hey… is that…?”
She pointed further off… to another booth, where Jase sat, scrolling through his phone as he sipped his coffee casually.
I looked back at her, and she did me.
“Seriously,” she said, smiling, “he’s so into you he keeps following you.”
“I don’t think you’re helping my case here, Lizzy,” I said, annoyed.
“I’m joking,” she uttered dramatically. “Seriously… this is like a second away from his work. He probably wanted a coffee. Chill, girl, chill.”
I just grumbled under my breath and stared back down at my hands, playing with them.
He was following me, I could feel it. I could sense menacing intent in him, I just didn’t know if it was good intent or not.
All I knew is that every time he smirked at me, he promised danger.
