I had been staring at Jase for a while now, and he had his eyes closed, head resting on the back of the couch.
I just pulled the blanket off myself and slid off his lap, deciding I wanted to go and use the restroom.
After doing my business, I washed my hands and exited the bathroom, about to make my way downstairs…
My vision suddenly framed with black, and I winced, pressing a hand to my head.
I suddenly felt dizzy and disoriented, and I set my other hand on my head, trying to think straight.
And then a voice echoed through my thoughts:
Vision is white. Darkness comes in. Drench this sweet girl straight to sin.
I struggled to breathe, wincing as a sudden heat swam up my neck, devouring my brain.
Vision is white. Darkness comes in. Drench this sweet girl straight to sin.
It repeated the phrase more than once, continuing as my vision blurred further, and I whimpered.
No greater sin than the one you will commit, it said. Sin of lust? Sin of wrath? Sin of pride? Oh, no. The sin she will commit is the sin of sloth, such a beautiful sin for a girl who lost.
I whimpered, clutching my head tighter.
It hurts.
It then whispered darkly:
Fracta puella. Ea vulnerabilis est. Sine me intus, solus mihi est. Sine me intus, ego te continebo. Fac me intus. Et possidebo vos.
My head suddenly split, and I cried out, collapsing onto my knees as I clutched my hair tightly.
Don’t worry, little Angel.
Just follow me everywhere I go.
Through the mountains and valleys of woe.
I’ll give you everything you want.
Just let go.
Everything you want, Emma.
I’ll be the most beautiful story you’ve ever been told.
And you’ll be safe under my control.
Just let go.
And let me in.
I continued whimpering, struggling to keep my thoughts straight.
Don’t fight it, Emma.
Just let me in.
I’ll give you everything you want, Emma.
Just let me in.
“Emma?” a voice came to my right.
Jase knelt down beside me. “Emma, are you alright?”
Just let me in, Emma.
You can’t fight me forever.
“Stop it...” I whispered. “You’re... hurting me.”
“Emma...?” Jase whispered.
You’re hurting, Emma.
I can help you.
Let go.
Let me in, Emma.
I’ll save you. You’ll be safe under my control.
Let it go now.
Just give in.
I squeezed my eyes shut tighter, whimpering.
“Emma, talk to me,” Jase said, setting his hands on my shoulders.
But I couldn’t speak... there was this pressure on the sides of my head, threatening to press down and take me, and it hurt.
I was fighting it... it felt like an intrusion... like someone was piercing into my skull, and I didn’t like it.
“I’m... not... hurting,” I managed to let out. “Stop....”
I wasn’t, though. Before this, I was perfectly numb, and I was fine.
“Emma, who are you talking to?” Jase questioned.
Let me in, Emma, he said. I can take the pain of your sister away.
My... sister?
I closed my eyes tightly, my hold loosening as something cold filled me.
And a sharp pain burst through my head, and I cried out, shielding my face as if I was about to be hit.
But then I felt cold, colder than I ever felt.
I opened my eyes, staring at the ground as my body remained still.
What... what was happening?
“Emma,” Jase said to me.
I couldn’t... I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t feel. I couldn’t move. I could only think and see.
All the sudden, my body stood up.
I watched in horror.
Wait... but that wasn’t me. I couldn’t move anything. I couldn’t feel my arms.
I’m not moving myself.
“Emma,” Jase said, looking into my eyes. “Are you alright?”
My body started walking forward.
I tried shoving my hands forward to stop myself, but I kept walking.
It was like... I was seporated from myself.
What’s happening?!
“Emma, where are you going?” Jase demanded.
My body took many steps forward, and I grew panicked when it opened the front door and stepped outside.
I couldn’t feel the cold air... I couldn’t smell the night mist.
My form stepped forward again, continuing across the street.
I could hear the front door close behind me, and I knew Jase was following.
“Emma, where are you going?” he demanded, walking behind me. “Your sister’s with Pierce, remember?”
Oh, right...
Lizzy. Lizzy was alright. Lizzy was fine.
A sudden numbness consumed me, and I felt my thoughts fog over.
It’s alright. I didn’t need to panic.
I was just walking. It was fine.
I wanted to see Lizzy again, right? Maybe that’s what the man wanted from me. He wanted to help me.
Jase followed after me still. “Emma.”
But I entered the woods, continuing forward.
He ran forward and caught up with me. “Emma.”
My body just continued forward, and I watched in my dream state.
“Emma,” Jace whispered, “why can’t I hear your thoughts?”
My body continued forward, and it remained silent.
I couldn’t think straight. What was my body doing?
As I watched myself go forward, Jase slowed his pace and walked behind me, probably looking for threats.
We were walking for some time now, until my arms pushed through a bundle of pine trees, revealing a large, edged cliff.
I remembered that cliff... Lizzy and I really loved rock-climbing on it. It was like a thousand foot drop.
Why did my body take me here?
“Emma, why are we here?” Jase said coming through the trees behind me.
Against my will, my legs started moving forward.
Wait... what was it doing...?
“Emma,” Jase said then, stepping forward, “Emma.”
I continued forward, and my numbness state immediately vanished.
No. No, stop! STOP!
STOP! NO!
My legs paused at the edge of a cliff, and I watched my hair blow past my face.
“EMMA!” Jase screamed, rushing after me.
My arms just raised, and the wind blew my hair past my face.
“EMMA!” he yelled. “DON’T! DON’T! STOP IT!”
I fought it. I fought myself.
NO! I screamed at my body. NO! STOP! I DON’T WANT TO DIE! STOP IT!
But a voice came to my right. “Oh, my, look who we have here.”
Jase paused, glancing over.
By his voice... I knew it was Twilight.
It was him. He was the voice. I recognized it.
The panic immediately consumed me, and if I wasn’t disconnected from myself, I swore I’d start crying.
He’s controlling me.
Distantly, I watched my vision grow cloudy... and by the look, I knew my eyes were tearing up.
“I thought you wanted her dead, Jase,” Twilight said as the wind howled through my ears.
Jase just looked to me. “Emma, get down from there!”
“She can’t control herself,” Twilight stated in a dark tone. “I control her. She’s mine now.”
The wind blew past my face, and I could feel the darkness consume me.
No. NO! JASE, SAVE ME! JASE! STOP ME! DON’T LET HIM KILL ME!
Jase just immediately ran to me. “EMMA! FIGHT HIM!”
I can’t! I can’t feel myself! Jase, help me!
But Twilight said it:
“Emma.
“JUMP.”
And I fell forward.
Jase screamed in agony from above me. “EMMA!”
My world fell out from under me, and I watched the wind burn through my eyes.
It was the most horrifying thing that I could ever experience.
It was fast... dizzying. I couldn’t see straight.
The darkness was blooming... the ground getting closer.
I never wanted this...
I will never see them again. I will never see Jase again. Or Lizzy. Or mom or dad. I’ll be lost in oblivion... forever.
I didn’t want that. I never wanted that.
I wanted him. I wanted Jase.
I never wanted this.
I watched as tears slipped from my eyes and flew above me, vanishing into the sky.
I never got to say goodbye.
The ground flew toward me at light speed, and my vision turned to black.
But I heard a flap... like a sudden burst of wings.
And then it stopped.
