“Call me when you get home,” mom said gently as I stepped down the sidewalks. “It must be dark this time of night.”
“Alright,” I responded, stepping down the dark, misty streets. “I shall do so.”
“Love you, Honey,” mom said.
“Love you, mom.”
And the phoneline clicked.
I gazed up then, pushing the phone into my pocket.
I didn’t really like how dark it was out here… I felt the familiar cold hands squeezing around my throat when I remembered the night I was attacked.
I felt my skin pale, and I closed my eyes tightly. “God. Why is daylight savings time such a pain in the ass? Now it’s dark every time I walk home from school.”
And Lizzy had to take the car to spend time with Pierce… again.
After gazing up into the streets… I immediately stopped.
Jase stood next to a light pole, leaning against it as he smiled lazily.
Goddamn it.
I swallowed something hard.
I mean… he did this a lot, but knowing I was being followed by a possible psychopath never really settled with me.
“Good afternoon, Emma,” Jase said then, smile widening a touch. “Having a nice walk home?”
I just took a small step back, swallowing something hard as I glanced behind him.
“Really?” he said then, chuckling as he stood up straighter. “This again? What is with you and running? Just give up already.”
I just darted past him immediately, gasping as I tried to brush by.
He just caught my wrist, and I screamed when he reeled me against the light pole, pinning me to it seconds later.
As I caught my breath, he just stood in front of me like a wall of protection.
“It’s a bad idea to run around this time of night,” he said then, eyes dark. “Especially with that mugger incident.”
“I feel like the one I should be afraid of is you,” I stated then.
He just tipped his head to the side. “Emma.”
I gazed up, glaring daggers. “What?”
“Where is your car?” he asked me then, lips straightening suddenly as if he was disappointed in me. “Shouldn’t you be driving it home?”
I hesitated.
He arched a brow.
“Lizzy keeps taking it,” I stated then. “She and I share a car, but she keeps taking it every day to see Pierce.”
His eyes darkened slightly. “Well, if she keeps taking it, then it’s hardly your car, isn’t it?”
I just thinned my lips.
“Would you like me to drive you home?” he asked me.
“I can walk.”
“Yes and look how well that’s been going for you.” He pointed to my throat, where the bandages hid under my turtleneck.
I just pulled the collar more over them, avoiding eye contact.
“Get off me,” I said then.
“You done running yet?”
I shot him a look. “I said get off me.”
His lashes lowered. “Answer my question, and I’ll think about it.”
I huffed out a breath. “Why are you doing this?”
“Because you keep wandering out at night and almost getting yourself killed.”
I just glared at the ground. “Like you care.”
“Sorry?” he said then.
“You seem the type to want to slaughter me,” I stated then. “I’m sure you’ve killed someone at some point in your life.”
“That’s hardly fair, Angel,” he said then, eyes darkening.
I just pushed against his chest. “Get off me.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
I just relaxed against the pole, giving him an annoyed look.
A smile curled his lips then. “Go out with me tonight.”
“Why should I?” I countered.
His smile turned ghastly. “I’m keeping you busy. You need a break from thinking.”
I narrowed my eyes at him.
“I’ll bring you home,” he said then, still smiling. “You can change. And then dinner on me?”
I sighed then, not particularly amused. “Fine.”
