It was dark when my lashes parted later that night, and I gazed around nervously in this oddly white room.
My vision was as clear as day now… it was nice to see again.
But my eyes widened when I recalled the previous memory.
I sat up then, but immediately winced when the tubes in my arms pulled with the movement, and I collapsed back down.
I looked around again, finding a giant, white window with bright, blue curtains on my right, and there was a door on my left…
With Jase standing there.
I stared at him helplessly, and he just smirked as if he enjoyed my confusion.
“Where am I?” I demanded.
“The hospital,” he stated then, “relax.”
I settled back into myself, glancing around nervously. “Why?”
“The doctors said you fell and got a nasty concussion,” he stated then, smirking still. “But you’ll be alright.”
I stared at him for a long moment, lips parting. “Uhm… I why did you take me here?”
“What do you mean?” he said curiously.
“You made it seem like… in the car that you were taking me somewhere else.”
“I was originally planning on it,” he said then, nodding slightly as if recalling the memory. “But I got pulled over by the police.”
“What? Why?”
“For speeding,” he responded with a smile, “I then told them I was taking you to the hospital and they helped me come here by driving beside me.”
My eyes widened.
Where was he planning on taking me then?
“Such helpful people and yet such maggots,” he recalled as if he despised them. “Anyhow,” he looked back down at me with a dark smile, “they also found bruising around your neck, and traces of someone else’s blood on your thumb. Care to explain?”
I remained silent then, and I watched him.
He arched a brow.
“A… a mugger,” I lied then, wondering by his smile if it was the best to tell him the truth.
He scared me a little… what was he planning? What schemes hid behind those eyes?
“A mugger?” he echoed.
“Yes.”
“A mugger choked you instead of using a gun?” he repeated, brows lifting.
“Yes.”
His lashes immediately lowered, and a ghost of a smile peeked through his lips… as if he knew I was lying and it amused him but decided not to say anything. “And the blood on your thumb?” he asked me.
“I plunged him in the eye,” I said honestly this time.
“I see, I see,” he said then, stepping to the bed.
He sat onto it then, getting oddly close as my lips parted.
His eyes just locked on mine, and he smiled. “You had some beautiful earrings on. Were those for me?”
“What?” I said then.
Oh, right…
“Yes,” I responded.
“I admire your attraction to me,” he said then, pulling some hair away from my face. “Sadly, you’re bad at hiding it from me.” His eyes glowed dangerously. “And you’re bad at lying, too.”
He leaned down, face inches from mine as I gasped. He just lightly pecked my lips. “Remember that.”
I stared at him helplessly when he stood and brushed off his pants. “Where are you going?”
He gazed up, smirking. “You want me to stay?”
I nodded.
“Why?” he said then, chuckling. “I thought you didn’t trust me.”
I just stared at him. “You’re scary.”
“So?” he countered.
“You’re intimidating,” I said again.
His smile darkened then. “Are you saying my intimidating presence make you feel safe from others?”
I was silent then, staring down at the floors.
“On one condition,” he said then.
I gazed up.
He smirked. “I get to sit next to you.”
I watched him for a moment.
He could pull tubes, he could insert something toxic into my IV, but… but at the same time… I knew very well he wasn’t the one who tried to kill me.
If Jase attempted to kill me, he wouldn’t have done it so sloppily. He would’ve done it with grace and expertise. Not choking me… He would stab me. I was more likely to die that way.
Let alone his eye was undamaged.
So, yes, he was right. His intimidating presence made me feel safe.
From… the other guy.
“Fine,” I said then, pulling the covers higher over my chest, “go ahead.”
He then stepped over to the seat and sighed, settling down. “How are you feeling?”
I pulled the covers further down to my feet, making him smirk.
“Do I make you feel self-conscious?” he said then.
“No,” I said honestly, “I was just cold.”
I was cold… in fact… he always made me feel so fluttery inside.
After a moment, I gazed up at him.
His eyes searched my features then, and I watched him back.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” I questioned him.
He just smiled, dangerously. “You’re nothing like I expected, Emma Swells. That’s what I love about you.”
