" Thank you for accepting this interview. I know it is not a very good time for this conversation as it must be a very difficult period for you. However by telling us your story, you might help other families in the same situation to be aware of the risks of Coronavirus."
I took a small break to stare at her, I was not sure she was mentally ready to talk. I asked unsure whether she could answer or not:
"How did you get to know that your family was infected by the Covid-19 ?"
She coughed to free her throat and then started to talk:
"One week ago, my twelve year-old daughter started to have fever and dry cough. I thought and hoped that the fever would go away with a few medicines. But then, after a few days, she had difficulties breathing. That is when we went to the hospital. They told that my daughter and I were infected by the virus so we got admitted. I did not have any symptoms so I was not even aware I was infected. After a few days, I felt a lot better but the doctors were not confident with my daughter's state. I asked them to save her, I begged them to save her. She was just 12 years old, she did not live enough in this world. I am a nurse but when I saw my daughter in this condition, I could only think of her, my job became secondary. I prayed the god to save her, I asked to take my life and spare my daughter. Nobody heard my voice. The medical staff tried their best but they could not save her. My child, my reason to live, my happiness was gone."
She told those last words with tears on her face. She was holding a jacket tightly which must have been her daughter's.
I did not know how to comfort her. I told:
"Please stay brave, please..."
She cut off my speech while sobbing and mumbled:
"You know the moment I felt I died was when I called the ambulance. My daughter looked into my eyes and asked me to please save her. She wanted to live like any teenager at this age. My heart is bleeding inside and I just cannot control my sadness. Every object in my house gives me memories of my angel. The mirror shows me her face, the kitchen, the snacks she ate, her room, the time she spent drawing colourful sketches... I can carry on lamenting myself but I will stay strong. I was thinking that now that my daughter is gone, there is no reason for me to live. But then, I saw the families, waiting for their relatives to get cured. Since yesterday, I have been back, working as a nurse. I am fighting with the medical staff against this sickness. As people say, this is a war. I will fight alongside the heroes of this war, the doctors, the nurses, the policemen, the home helper for elderly people, the delivery people, the people making masks, the caterers offering food to help the medical staff and so on. All these women and men who want this war to come to an end, we will fight until our last breath."
There was no more tears on her face but the will to vanquish was enlightening her face like the sun shining in a hopeless gray sky.
