We didn't have a plan,

but we were drowning in the journey,

heading down the coast,

the world blurred by the streak of red and yellow,

and the pulse of blue,

while we fed the fire in our lungs.

Cigarettes burned like fleeting promises.

We stopped in Portland,

Port Angeles, La Push,

we set our tents in the sand,

the ocean whispering dark secrets at our backs.

and when the moon crept high,

we ran,

we were restless souls,

craving the night,

he was drunk on demons,

I was high on devils,

and laughter,

laughter like knives,

cutting through the air.

We climbed the jagged rocks,

with the ocean biting at our feet,

our hearts thrumming to the rhythm of chaos,

as the cold waves swallowed us whole,

over and over again.

and we didn't know if it was ours

or if it was just the darkness laughing at us.
