In the land of seconds,

moments slip through like sand,

fingers grasping at what we can never keep.

minutes roll,

spinning into hours,

until days line up,

stacking themselves into weeks,

and every era bleeds into the next,

a slow decay,

a somber march toward the end.

The months converge,

twelve to a year,

ten to a decade,

and decades stack one by one,

to build a century,

a fragile monument to our fleeting lives.

Ten centuries,

a thousand years,

we say they're young,

we say they're old,

but we are nothing but ants

caught in the shadow of something far more grand.

We talk of dinosaurs,

as if they're history,

but their bones don't begin to measure

the one second we have existed

in the cold, unblinking eyes of the universe.

We are nothing but afterthoughts.
