I drove that winding road home,

just to catch a glimpse of the beach.

Music blared through the open windows,

louder now, shaking the dawn from my bones.

At daybreak, I'd find my secret spot,

a free patch of asphalt

pressed between towering beach hotels,

glass walls glittering with wealth,

separating pristine luxury

from the rawness of the world.

The lot leaned crooked,

cement walls slanting like forgotten ruins,

and between their jagged lines,

the palms swayed violently in the wind,

scattering sand like star skies

that clung to my bare feet.

Sometimes, I wouldn't even wear shoes.

I'd cross the cracked lot,

descend the cement ramp,

follow the worn wooden path to the stairs,

where the beach stretched endless before me,

sand creeping over every step.

The sunrise bled onto my skin,

gold and soft,

a welcome after the sting of the first swim.

The sand clung to me,

gritty, relentless,

its touch grounding me in its imperfection.

Somewhere between the salt on my lips

and the sunrise in my veins,

I realized I loved it.

The sand,

the mess of it,

the sense of it pressed against my skin,

it became my first love.
