We've been driving in silence for the past thirty minutes. I need her to start talking. I'm over her whole ominous approach to this shit.
"Remember when my job offered me that really big promotion and me, you, and Cam went out to celebrate?" Those are the first words she says to me.
"What about it?" I say. I don't look at her, I just stare out the window.
"Well, that promotion was just my business transferring me to a shadier place. That girl that I shot was named Grace. She was my boss."
"Wasn't Grace the person who-" I interrupt.
"Dragged Camila onto the cruise ship and supposedly died first? Yep, that's the Grace." Ruby finishes for me. Then she continues where she left off. "I had no clue that this Grace was the same one that Camila had been friends with before. Not until about three days ago. We went into a guy's house. Grace said it was an at-home meeting between just the five of us. When we got into the house, he was standing there ready to greet Grace and me with his daughter by his side."
"Didn't you say she said five?" I ask.
"I'm getting to that part. I was confused too because there were only four of us there. But as soon as the man started to speak, Grace pulled out a gun and held it to his head. The daughter jumped up and tried to reach for her own gun when Vincent came out of now where and had ahold of her. He pressed a gun into her back and threatened her, basically saying that if you don't kill your father, I will make sure you regret it. I'd rather not relive it."
I'm silent for a while. I process what she said. "Why didn't you tell us that he was out? We could have-"
"No Xavier, you don't understand! This is bigger than Vincent having this obsession with her." Her grip around the wheel tightens.
"Then how, in the hell, are we supposed to save her?"
"It won't be easy. I have to kill three people. Getting to them is the hardest part. And I have to be the one to do it. I led them to Camila the second time, so I'm going to get her out of it. After I kill three certain people, I need you to do me a favor Xaiver."
"I'm not going to kill you if that's what you're planning on saying." Killing Ruby just doesn't seem right. "There has to be another way."
"There's not, and I need you to promise me you will kill me before their people get to me. If not, I will suffer a fate worse than death." I finally turn to look at her, she's crying.
"Ruby, I can't."
"Xavier, just promise me you will! I will explain everything to Camila so she won't be caught off guard. Just promise me that you'll grow a pair and kill me."
"I promise." I take in a shaky breath and lean back against the seat.
"We're here."
