He was outside,

in a clearing,

a forgotten patch of earth

where the trees bowed low,

their branches skeletal against the soft moonlight.

He sat on a log,

it's bark rough,

it's surface scarred with the memory of storms.

Beneath his boots, the ground was damp,

dirt and leaves clinging like secrets

that refused to be shaken loose.

Beside him,

a rusted lantern hung from an iron hook,

its glass clouded,

casting faint, flickering light

on a tin box of treasures,

edges bent and corners worn,

and a battered journal,

its pages dog-eared,

ink smudged by careless fingers.

Ash trailed across the mossy ground,

a breadcrumb path of spent moments,

leading to a hollow stump

where the embers of an abandoned fire

smoldered in quiet defiance.

The air was sharp,

biting with the edge of the night's end,

but above,

the stars.

unpolluted,

untouched,

they spilled across the sky

like a shattered mirror,

glittering fragments strewn over the abyss.

There was something eternal in their glow,

something vast,

ancient,

omniscient.

They glinted of worlds unseen,

of time that doesn't bend to mortal hands,

and for a moment,

he wondered if the stars knew him,

or if he was just another thought,

forgotten before the dawn.
