Another weekend, another party and she felt like she needed it. Kat stepped through the front doors. She waved to a few friends she knew. Scott quickly left Kat's side, hurrying over to Kelly who was waiting by the sofa with a cup already in her polished hand.
She wondered how the heck Scott ever got so lucky to get with Kelly. From Kat's view, Kelly was way too good for him.
Kat walked by Billy, his lips parted when he saw her, then he closed it and looked away. What could he possibly say. It was over. There he stood, no surprise, with a gorgeous shapely brown-haired girl, Mary, by his side.
She had heard all about the two. Rumors swirled. Everyone said Billy and Mary made the perfect couple. They had dated off and on all during middle school.
Kat could help but look Mary up and down. Her perfectly arched eyebrows, her gorgeous mane of curled hair, her bright smile that glistened while holding Billy's hand. Billy was never coming back.
"Kat! Hey Come over here beautiful! What's happening?" Ron darted up in front of her with his arm out and brought her in for a hug. Ron acted as if they were best friends, she hadn't even spoken to him since she started dating Billy.
"Hi." She gave a forced smile. She knew who she would rather be with, but Ron wasn't a bad choice, just not her first choice.
"Come on, let's get you a drink." He draped his arm over her shoulder and led her to the kitchen through the crowded living room.
Kat stood in the archway of the kitchen as Ron fixed a cup of beer for the two. She rubbed her arm with discomfort.
With another quick glimpse at the two, Kat watched Mary swiftly entwine her arm with Billy's. Her heart sank seeing what she missed.
"Hey, Here you go." Ron slipped a red plastic cup into Kat's hand. She shook her head waking from the obvious stare of Billy and Mary in the adjoining spacious living room.
"I can't." Kat pushed the cup away, he pushed it back in her hand and lifted his chin.
"It's fine, go ahead. I'm here, I'll watch you." Ron persisted, "Just have some fun. It's only one."
She wasn't going down that path again. Just as Kat opened her mouth to reply. Billy had made his way into the kitchen. Billy didn't look as if he was paying any attention to her. But just then with his head down and squeezing the keg nozzle he spoke.
"You're not supposed to be drinking." Billy said. He sprayed the beer into the red Solo cup.
"What?" Kat questioned. She crinkled her face. She was floored. She could barely believe what she just heard.
What did Billy care anyway? He had better not even think about acting like another brother and giving her orders. It was not his place and she already had way too many bosses as it was.
"Get lost, McCray." Ron snapped shooting Billy a nasty glare.
"I'm not talking to you, Reynolds." Billy countered calmly. Billy placed one filled cup beside him on the counter and was filling a second for his date. Seeing the two cups added another layer of heaviness to Kat's heart.
"Go back to your date McCray. Kat's with me tonight. Right Kat?" Ron tilted his lips in a sarcastic grin.
Kat shrugged, feeling deflated. She hated to admit it, but she was. Although she would so much rather be with Billy, but he made his choice.
She ran her arm over the scar, uncomfortable with the rough rising interaction between the two.
"She goes out there with that beer and you'll have to deal with her brothers." Billy glared at her. "That's up to you, if you want to deal with that."
Billy had leveled a serious stare at her. Kat knew she would get earful from Steve way before Ron would. Billy was right it was not worth it.
"Here." Ron locked eyes with Billy and defiantly shoved the cup in her hand. Ron laid his hand on the small of her back and led her into the living room.
It was only a few minutes later Scott appeared. Kat found it quite ironic Scott suddenly was checking on her, he had never even looked twice in her direction when they went to parties together.
Kat could easily conclude the only reason for Scott's uncharacteristic concern was Billy. He obviously had sent Scott this way.
"What are you drinking?" Scott demanded. As usual his mere presence annoyed her.
"I wasn't drinking it." Kat insisted. "I'm only holding it."
"Throw it out!" Scott ordered.
"Scott, it's my fault." Ron said "I didn't know." Ron placed his fingers on his chest. Kat gazed at Ron, appreciating and impressed that he stuck up for her. Even though he did know. And he was the one who put her in the situation.
"She knows." Scott said evenly. Scott pointed at Kat and gave her a strong stare.
Kat marched into the kitchen and emptied the contents of the cup down the drain. She was fuming. She lifted the handle and filled he cup with water. This was all Billy's fault and now Scott would tell Steve. Who is Billy anyway to tell. It's not his business anymore. They weren't going out.
When they arrived home Kat stomped up the stairs to her room. Brushing her teeth in the bathroom, she could hear Scott telling the boys that Billy told him Kat was drinking. She knew it!
