The next afternoon, the phone rang. Sean grabbed it and after answering it, he suddenly hung up. Soon after Dave repeated the gesture as the phone rang again. Another ring and Steve leaned in grabbing the receiver before Sean or Dave had a chance. Curious what game they were playing with the phone and tiring of it.
"Hello?" Steve asked annoyed.
Billy hearing a new voice tried again. "Hi, this is Billy, is Kat there?"
"Who?" Steve's face crinkled.
"Billy McCray." He said as politely as he could.
"Hold on. Kat, phone." He gave her a glare as he waved the handset at her, "It's a boy. I want to know who he is, what he wants, and how he got our number." Then placed the phone in her hand.
Ugh. She was going to have to explain Billy to him. She had butterflies as slipped the phone over her ear. it seemed to be getting serious Billy was calling after they just saw each other last night.
"Hi." She spoke in a soft voice. She held her hand over the mouthpiece trying not to be overheard by the five boys half listening, and Steve standing behind her waiting for her to get off the phone to discuss this.
She paused to listen and said, "Let me ask." She laid the phone down and turned gingerly to Steve. She cautiously asked not sure how he was going to react. "Steve? Can I have someone come over to meet you?"
"Someone who? Is it a boy?" Steve asked unapprovingly. He kept his head was down, flipping through a stack of mail, but, he stood close monitoring the conversation. He rolled his eyes up to her waiting for her answer.
"Yes." She said sheepishly.
Steve fired off questions. Where is he from? Who is he? How long have you known him? But she barely knew any of the answers. She knew it would be tough to convince him to let her date. But he had to know it was going to happen sometime. "Alright. Let's get this over with." He said with frustration.
Her muscles tightened with excitement. She picked up the headset.
"Hello? Are you sure you want to come over? Alright. See you soon." Kat set the handle on the receiver and took off upstairs. Billy was crazy to voluntarily to put himself before this firing squad. But brave as well.
