I then sat in my room, breathing softly as I sat cross-legged on my bed.
I stared down at a box resting on my feet—a box that my father got me for my twelfth birthday—and lightly played with the lock.
But I suddenly heard a knock on the window, and I shot my head over, brows drawing together.
Jase stood on the roof, kneeling by my window so he could see in the room.
When my eyes locked on his, he smiled and waved.
I just set the box beside me, brows drawing together as I stood and stepped over to my window.
I just pulled open the window and peered out to him, but he just slipped in the room, making me stumble backward.
Jase just stood fully, making me stare at him.
“How did you get on the roof?” I asked him.
He smirked at me. “Pure talent.”
I narrowed my eyes into a glare.
He just dropped his hands, chuckling. “Do you have to be so suspicious of me all the time?”
“Yes,” I said angrily. “You always keep everything about you a mystery. And only show me things if it scares me or irritates me.”
He just smirked, eyes glowing dangerously.
“You ready for the date?” he said then.
I stared at him for a moment. “Oh, uhm... my mom—”
“That hasn’t stopped you before,” he replied, smirking. “Come on, now. We made a deal. Honor it.”
I glanced back at my bedroom door before looking back at Jase. “Alright.”

“You haven’t eaten your steak,” Jase noticed, lightly chewing his salad.
I stared down at my plate, blinking. “I’m not hungry.”
He just set his fork down and lightly pat his lips, setting his napkin down seconds later. “Something on your mind?”
I looked up. “The waitresses can see you now.”
“Yeah,” he said, shrugging, “because I want them to.”
I glared then. “How do you do that?”
Jase smiled darkly. “It’s a secret.”
I rolled my eyes and stared down at my plate again. “You’re good at hypnotization or something.”
That’s the only explanation.
“That’s one word for it,” Jase noted.
I gazed up. “You make me nervous. Why are you such a mystery?”
He set his cheek in his hand, smiling. “It’s better that way. You aren’t ready to get to know me.”
“You don’t make any sense to me.”
Jase’s eyes glowed still. “You aren’t ready to know me, Sweetheart.”
“If you tell me, you have to kill me?”
His smile only darkened.
I stared back down at my plate, butterflies spreading through me like dangerous tingles.
He glanced up, smirking now. “Okay, lemme tell you a little secret, kay?”
I leaned forward, listening closely.
He seemed very amused at my stance.
“I’m not normal,” he told me.
I shrank back in my seat. “Wow… because I couldn’t tell that for myself.”
He just tipped his head to the side.
“Why are you so scary?” I said then
He shrank back in his chair. “You think I’m scary?”
“Yes,” I muttered, deciding to ask him. “Are you dangerous?”
“What do you think?” he replied vaguely.
I just stared at him.
His smile widened at my concerned expression, as if it amused him.
I just shook my head and stuffed my phone in my purse. “I’m going home.”
“I’ll take you,” he said then, standing with me.
I gave him a look. “With what car? We took the train.”
“Then I’ll walk you,” he stated then.
I shook my head, starting to the front door, and he tossed a couple bills on the table and followed me. “You’re so... persistent.”
Jase smiled as we exited the restaurant and the cold, night air brushed his skin. “That’s one of my traits.”
“You’re also... odd.”
“How so?”
“Just...” I glanced over at him, eyes suddenly soft, “just... odd.”
