“Emma,” Jase’s voice flooded me with ease, “Emma.”
I parted my lashes, gazing up.
The light blinded me immediately... and something dark and small floated around me quicker than I could handle.
My sight adjusted after a moment, and I blinked hazily, looking around.
We were still beneath the cliff... but... but I noticed we were floating somehow.
Did I die?
I gazed up at Jase, finding him cradling me to his chest... but...
But wait.
There were large, dark wings sprouting from his back, and they surrounded us like a massive shield of protection.
His wings... they were so beautiful. The feathers were long and thin, pitch black with purple highlights... and they glistened beautifuly under the sunlight.
Feathers floated around us, swarming the air with a dark, black beauty, and I watched as we carefully floated to the ground.
“Am I dead...?” I whispered.
His eyes softened. “No, you’re very much alive.”
“I can feel myself now...” I whispered to him. “I can move again.”
“I cut off his take on you,” Jase said, landing on his feet with me in his arms.
His wings just surrounded us in a dark, black curtian. “There’s nothing to fear now, Emma. I promised that I wouldn’t let him hurt you.”
My eyes glistened with his reflection, and I swore that I felt a tear slide down my cheek.
He just smiled, setting his forehead against mine. “It’s alright now.”
I just stared at him helplessly. “They weren’t... cut off...?”
“No,” he whispered, “I’ve always had them.”
“The scars....”
“Are from them tearing out of my back,” he said. “That’s why I never show them.”
“Does it hurt...?” I asked him.
“It doesn’t matter,” he whispered. “I’m not losing you.”
I watched him helplessly.
But he just gazed up, crouching and shooting off the ground.
I held onto him tightly when his wings flapped, and we shot upward.
We flew for a couple seconds before we reached the top of the cliff, and Jase lowered his feet on the ground, holding me to him tightly.
Suddenly, my eyes felt heavy, and my head lolled back, unable to move forward.
My world twisted and turned from the familiar lack of sleep, and I whimpered, fighting my eyes so they’d stay open.
Distantly, I heard Twilight start toward us, and I whimpered, unable to stay awake.
I couldn’t keep my eyes open.
“It’s okay, Emma,” Jase promised me, gazing down. “I’ll take care of him.”
“No...” I whispered, fighitng the exhaustion. “I need to....”
“Emma,” Jase pressed gently, “rest.”
My head suddenly fell back, and my world drowned out immediately.
But a sudden gunshot burst through my eardrums, and I heard Jase scream.
Pain shot through me immediately, and I choked.
But the darkness only flooded faster.
