"You coming home soon?" I asked mom as I scratched down notes from my Biology class.
"Sadly my plane canceled," she responded over the phone, sighing as if exhausted. "Sorry. The next flight out is tomorrow, I'm hoping that'll stay intact."
"Really?" I said then, brows drawing together. "That's the third plane canceled this week."
"It seems as if your mother still has unfortunate luck," she responded grimly.
"It's alright, mom," I said gently, finishing the last problem. "We can hold down the fort without you and dad. We're almost eighteen, anyway."
"I know, Sweetheart," she said then, laughing softly. "You and your sister... well you are responsible, and I trust you."
"Excuse me?!" Lizzy called from the living room.
"Crap, she heard me," mom said then, though didn't sound concerned in the slightest. "Lizzy," she called louder, "I expect no more parties! The house should be spotless!"
"Too late," she mumbled.
But I piped in, knowing mom didn't hear, "She said, yes, ma'am."
Mom sighed then, clearly knowing I was sugarcoating her words. "Alright, well... your dad and I are about to go out for some dinner. Seems we'll be stuck here forever."
"I hope not," I said gently.
"Well, I love you," mom said then, "bye."
"Bye," me and Lizzy said in unison.
I snapped the phone shut, setting it on the counter.
I then leaned back and exhaled, yawning.
Lizzy just moved to sit next to me, smiling slyly when I glanced over at her.
"What?" I said.
She just sputtered her lips. "You and Jase sat together in Psych. How'd it go?"
"Smoothly," I said sarcastically.
"What'd he say?" she said then, clearly interested. "He call you pretty? Attracting?"
"In so many words."
"He so has the hots for you."
"Clearly," I said, unsure of the words myself.
His dark smile promised bad things, but I wasn't sure if those bad things involved relationship scandals and date nights without parental consent, or if it involved something less natural... like murder and arson.
His eyes themselves held the souls of possible victims, it was unsettling, to say the least.
But also alluring in a way.
"How's your psych project go?" she asked me.
I sighed and closed my eyes tightly. "Not well. He sucks at answering questions."
"How so?"
"I feel like..." I said then, parting my lashes lazily, "that he knows how to get under my skin. He knows just what to say to get me to lose my thought process. It's weird."
"He is quite the looker."
"That's not what I'm saying."
"I know," she waved off my concern, "come on. You gotta stop believing every guy is out to get you!" She then slid off her seat and set her hand against the counter, leaning on it. "I hope you can at least make things up because that assignment is thirty points... and it's due tomorrow."
"I know, I know," I sighed, rubbing my temples.
But I parted my lips, gazing up slightly. "Liz, what time is it?"
"About a quarter till six, why?"
My lashes immediately lowered, and I closed my eyes tightly. "I have to go somewhere."
"Some...where?"
"Yes," I said then, glancing over at her, "do you know where Sacred Sandwiches is?"
I hated myself. I hated that I was considering this, but I had to for this stupid assignment.
She blinked. "Why?"
"Hungry," I lied, setting my hand on my stomach to indicate, "can't cook tonight. I'm tired. In the mood for sandwiches."
She blinked before nodding. "Yeah, it's about a mile from here. In the shopping district."
I sighed and slipped off the chair, standing. "Alright. Well... I'll catch the bus and go get us some food."
This was completely risky, and I was being an idiot... but THE ASSIGNMENT.
She then waved to me. "Alright, sis... I'm dead right now, anyway. Imma go take a shower."
I nodded, and she poked my nose before wandering off.
I sighed then and closed my eyes tightly, gazing down briefly at my wrist to find Jase's phone number still there... written in blue ink.
God, he pissed me off so much.
I then sighed and stepped over to the front door.
