Setelah beberapa menit yang tampaknya hampir sejam, tanganku kini yang menjadi tempat singgah debu untuk sementara, terasa seperti habis mengangkat beban setengah kwintal. Aku mulai bertanya – tanya, apakah aku adalah pekerja pabrik bagian pengaturan limbah? Well, lagipula ini seperti Tn. Cake adalah seorang supervisornya.
Kali ini, kertas yang kutulis tadi siap untuk dilaporkan. Botol tadi yang kusisihkan juga sudah kuatur lumayan rapi. Aku berharap jerih payahku ini bisa mempertemukan kami pada sebuah pintu. Pintu yang bila diketuk, seseorang akan membukakan untuk kami dan memberitahu paling tidak satu fakta terhadap kasus ini.
“Beta-Carotene, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Etanol, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Gamsol, Glucosamin, Insulin, Lysergyde, Amitriptyline, Arsenic, Strychnine,” ia membaca lembaran kertas laporan yang kucatat tadi dengan serius.
Ia mengulangi lagi sebanyak dua kali pada bagian Arsenic dan Strychnine, keningnya mulai dikernyitkannya. Dengan agak terburu – buru, ia langsung mengecek sendiri botol – botol bekas yang telah kupisahkan tadi. Ia menyuruhku untuk meminta kantong plastik pada constable yang berjaga.
Aku pun berlari secepatnya, karena ia menyuruhku dengan cepat. Aku sedikit senang karena usahaku sepertinya berpengaruh terhadap penyelidikan kami.
Setelah kuberikan, plastik itu setidaknya mengantongi empat botol yang berbeda. Ia menyuruhku untuk membawa benda itu, sementara ponsel dari jasnya berbunyi. Tn. Cake menemui panggilan seseorang.
“Yeah, Cake di sini,”
“…”
“Anda dapat dari mana nomor saya?”
“…”
Tn. Cake mengangguk.
“Cake tidak akan mengecewakan anda, mademoiselle.”
Ia mengembalikan ponsel itu ke dalam sakunya.
“Sebelum Monsieur Ulric, kita akan bertemu seseorang. Mari percepat, Feline.”
Aku mengangguk tanpa bertanya balik. Langkah kami yang cepat dan berhati – hati, menuruni tangga. Tampak wanita cantik itu sedikit cemas, walaupun wajahnya minim ekspresi, paling tidak kedua tangannya melipat dan saling memainkan jempolnya itu membuatku yakin. Ia mulai menghadap kami yang hendak berpamintan dan meraih pintu keluar.
Ia membungkuk sambil mengangkat sedikit roknya seperti pelayan bangsawan dulu, “Anda berdua pasti lelah, tidak untuk segelas teh dulu?” nadanya ramah.
Tn. Cake tersenyum tipis dan menolak dengan anggun, “Ah,tidak, mademoiselle, saya khawatir bahwa kami akan segera pergi.”
“Dimengerti, Monsieur Cake. Apakah ada perkembangan untuk saat ini?”
“Well, tidak terlalu jauh. Tapi bila anda mengizinkan, mademoiselle, saya akan senang untuk beberapa pertanyaan mendasar.”
“Silahkan, jangan sungkan – sungkan,”
Ia mengambil dua botol dari kresek yang kubawa lalu menunjukan pada Nona Belladonna.
“Botol ini, Arsenic, bisa jadi berkaitan dengan kasus sebelumnya. Lalu untuk apa seseorang di rumah ini menggunakan Strychnine?”
Ia berhenti sejenak tampak sedang berpikir.
“Ah, almarhum Tn. Jacob Ulric, punya dua penginapan di Little Waltham, Chelmsford dan Fleggburgh, Great Yarmouth. Untuk urusan pengendalian hama tikus, beliau selalu memakai Strychnine lebih banyak,” tambahnya sambil menghela nafas. “Oh, ada satu lagi. Villa di Carthew, St. Austell.”
Sebelum kami pergi, Tn. Cake menanyakan soal buku Hamlet & Ophelia yang kami temukan di kamar lantai atas. Wanita itu tanpa ragu menjawab bahwa Tn. Peregrine Ulric sejak kecil suka buku itu. Katanya, buku itu adalah pemberian dari ibu kandung Tn. Ulric.

“Kemana kita akan pergi? tanyaku pada pria yang duduk di sampingku sambil membuka halaman dari satu buku yang diambil tadi. Badannya dibuat menyadar setenang mungkin, namun ekspresi wajahnya jauh dari perasaan senang.
“Feline, kau paham bahasa jerman?” tangannya membalikkan halaman lain lalu mengangguk kecil, “Ah, ini dia. Tidak jadi, Feline.”
Daripada menjawab pertanyaanku, ia malah bertanya balik. Lalu dia kembali pada buku itu. Buku yang kupikir terlihat berbeda dari sebelumnya. Daripada sampul yang tampak berwarna dan ramai ilustrasi seperti pada umumnya, buku yang dipegang Tn. Cake hanya bertuliskan huruf, satu warna, dan tanpa ilustrasi.
Karena ia sudah begitu, maka rasanya mustahil untuk menganggunya. Sebagai gantinya aku melihat apa yang supir taksi itu lihat. Tampaknya mobil ini mengambil arah lurus dari pertigaan itu. Terlihat beberapa bangunan ruko yang tidak terlalu ramai.
“Kedai kopi Yellow’s high street, tuan?” sopir menoleh ke belakang sambil mengaktifkan lampu sein kiri yang tandanya seperti suara dentuman pada mobil sedan lama biasanya.
Tn. Cake menutup buku itu segera, “Oui.”
Kami pun turun dari mobil. Taksi itu segera pergi setelah Tn. Cake memberikan haknya.
“Well, Feline, seharusnya antara Nona Zoe atau aku yang terlambat,” ia memandang arlojinya.
Kedai kopi pada umumnya, daerah Cambourne, interior yang umum dan tidak banyak yang bisa dideskripsikan selain kata ‘normal’. Seorang wanita, dengan pakaian seragam tentunya walaupun beda dengan kemarin. Diangkatnya kacamaca hitam itu ke atas dahi, lalu ia melambaikan tangan sebanyak dua kali. Ia duduk di meja paling belakang dekat kasir.
Tn. Cake menyuruhku memesan beberapa makanan, sementara ia hanya perlu kopi hitam gelas besar dengan wadah yang bisa di bawa ke mana – mana. Ia meminjamkan kartu debitnya.
“Tn. Cake, saya tak punya banyak waktu,” wanita yang dipanggil Zoe itu sesaat melihat jam tangannya. “Dalam beberapa menit, saya harus mendatangi sebuah meeting.”
“Saya khawatir itu tidak akan terjadi, Nona Zoe,” tolak Tn. Cake dengan halus. “Ini bukan cara yang tepat untuk membicarakan sesuatu.”
Ia mendengus, “Baik.” Kemudian meneguk kopi expresso yang dipesannya lebih awal.
Kutaruh pesanan Tn. Cake, kopi hitam ukuran besar, lalu beberapa barang lainnya dalam satu wadah di dekatku setelah mengembalikn kartu debit itu. Well, ini pertama kalinya aku memesan machiato.
“Ulric tidak mungkin pelakunya!” Temponya pengucapannya cepat dan tegas.
“Anda tahu siapa pelakunya?”
Nyali mendadak ciut, raut wajahnya diselimuti kabut yang membutakan.
“A-aku tidak yakin…kupikir pasti seseorang?” ia menambahkan bahwa dirinya dan Ulric adalah teman sejak kecil yang tidak pernah terpisah, baik tempat mereka mengenyam pendidikan maupun nongkrong bersama. Bahkan mereka selalu satu kelas. Singkat cerita, Nona Zoe mengatakan sekali lagi kalau ia benar – benar tidak punya waktu, bahwa dirinya yang paling mengetahui mengenai Ulric. Katanya, Ulric adalah anak berbakat namun agak linglung dan cenderung mengambil keputusan yang bodoh. Beberapa teman yang membulinya membiarkan begitu saja, karena ia pengecut.
“Bisakah orang seperti itu melakukan pembunuhan? Sa-saya bahkan tidak tahu kondisinya apakah menyala atau tidak?”
Pelipis Tn. Cake terlihat urat, “Anda berbohong, Nona Zoe?” nada Tn. Cake kecewa.
Nona Zoe mengatakan bahwa ia melakukan itu karena polisi membuatnya tertekan. Tapi ia mengaku bahwa flat yang ditinggalinya tidak jauh dari rumah milik Ulric. Jadi alibi yang dikatakan pacarnya, Alex, itu ada benarnya.
Alasan itu cukup bisa diterima Tn. Cake yang tampak pelipisnya tidak terlihat urat lagi. Namun kali ini ia agak mengernyitkan dahinya, mungkin itu sedikit mengubah skenario yang ia pikirkan dari awal. Sejujurnya kupikir kebohongan Nona Zoe itu tidak perlu dilakukan. Lagipula selain itu memancing prasangka, bahkan itu tidak mengubah apapun dengan signifikan.
“Katakan sejujurnya, Nona Zoe, siapa yang paling cocok di benak anda?” tanya Tn. Cake dengan serius.
Ia menghela nafas dengan maksimal, kemudian dihembukannya perlahan. Diambilnya sepucuk kertas yang berisi coretan dan tulisan. Sebuah skenario, yang dirancang dengan hati – hati. Membacanya saja membuat bulu kudukku merinding. Tiga lembar kertas lusuh itu isinya sama – sama ditulis oleh kebencian.
“Alex.”
Ia mengatakan bahwa bertahun – tahun meneliti kasus yang dulu memberatkan Ulric selama tiga tahun dipenjara, lalu berpura – pura jadi kekasih Alex dan menggeleda dengan penuh kecermatan dan kewaspadaan. Benda itu disimpan dalam lemari pakaiannya, sesaat ditinggal Alex untuk urusan kecil.
Sesaat sebelum pergi, aku menanyakan langsung padanya mengapa ia melakukan hal spesifik ini kepada Alex.
“Meskipun pura – pura, hati wanita juga bisa luluh. Sesaat aku mulai ingin serius dengannya…” katanya dengan berat, “Aku tahu wanita itu selalu punya daya tarik tersendiri.”
Lalu ia pergi dengan terburu – buru.
Dengan fakta itu, aku merasa sedikit terombang – ambing dan mulai berpikir kalau yang dikatakan Nona Zoe barusan adalah jalannya kebenaran. Namun untuk saat ini, kami perlu mencari taksi untuk pergi ke tempat lain.
