I looked high and low for somewhat information about our current state or anything about former people who have had this before; nothing, absolutely nothing.
Eyeing through selected books, based on science and history I handpicked out from the shelves, zilch was found about individuals who have had focused HD vision or marvelous hearing, after a sudden incident, that involved a bite.
There were a few comics, both Marvel and DC, which I came across in the novel section, such as Batman, Superman and Spiderman but there weren't real people, only characters from someone's imagination.
I breathed deeply, running my hand through my chestnut hair, pulling my fringe back and sat at the nearest table in the library, feeling stressed. I placed both elbows on my knees and positioned my hands in my face, knowing I'm angry for not finding anything about our condition. Normally I would have found something that was close or nearly related to the topic.
"Lucy?"
I jumped a mile and my face came out from my hands then I viewed at the person who dared to scare me. This time, I didn't hear anybody behind me nor snuck upon me. I was too busy in my own world thinking too hard.
"Lucy, are you ok?"
I caught my name being called out again, when I comprehended that it was the librarian calling my name.
"Jeez you scared me, Mrs Beam."
She came over to me, slowly but surely getting closer to me. Her eyebrows were knotted together and her wrinkles were frowning on her fore head. Her eyes looked steady on me, unsure if she wanted to come any closer to me or wanted to actually make sure I was ok.
"Sorry about that Lucy. I saw you earlier looking anxious and you have been strolling about the whole library for about two hours now and I can't help but ask; you are ok? Are you looking or something specific?" Mrs Beam asked with a concerned, hard look across her face and whispered to me, almost too low for me to catch.
"Yeah I'm alright thank you, I'm just looking for something that's all and I can't seem to find it anywhere that's all."
"Oh? And what would that be?"
Mrs Beam sat across me, arms folded and sat with her back straight, waiting for my answer. She felt almost intimidating, the way she was sat. I hesitated, thinking that my request would be stupid and just hoped for the best.
"I am looking for a certain book, based on real human beings that have had supernatural experiences; such has brilliant eyesight or astonishing hearing? Almost like they have had superhuman strength?"
I felt my cheeks going red at the thought of asking something ridiculous has phenomenal strength. Clearly, that's not possible. Although I do want to know if someone out there, has had some kind of similar experience.
Mrs Beam observed at me; her eyebrows tied together in misperception and placed her right hand above on her chin, thinking to what I could mean and what to look upon. Her grey hair was all over the place, tied up in a messy bun. Her clothes look formal but I could tell she didn't have time to iron the majority of it.
She leaned back into her chair and all of a sudden I felt small and wished I never said anything to her. It felt like a while until she answered back to me, even though I acknowledged it was only a few seconds that went by. Her firm eyes gazed at me, never blinking, possibly thinking to about my question.
Until she finally answered, "I can't think of any human being having those conditions unless they have a hearing aid or laser eye treatment...there's no such thing has having amazing abilities, unless you're of course Superman," she paused and viewed at me before responding, "Why you ask?"
I paused for a moment, trying to think of a great excuse. I couldn't really inform her that I and my newly bitten friends have suddenly got great superhuman powers and I looking was for any answers regardless of what book I could try and have a look for.
I took a deep breath before responding and watched at Mrs Beam, looked directly at her eyes without looking away, so it felt more believable and made sure I wasn't lying about my stupid excuse, I abruptly came up with.
"Oh, just some research that's all. My friends and I are having a debate which is better; superhuman strength, like running at abnormal speed and hearing at a great distance or having magical powers. I, of course, was interested about the topic and wanted to explore further about the question, but then the topic got the better of me and I wanted to know if anyone out there had supernatural experiences, so I was looking in history books, to check if anyone them in the past or I was looking through science books, to see if any scientists have actually caught anyone with these weird experiences. And I found nothing."
I noticed that Mrs Beam had a small smile on her face and she was shaking her head at me, "you know Lucy, this is why I admire you. You push yourself further to find out much more into this world, even if it's some silly debate. I will be honest with you though; there's no such thing has neither magic nor outstanding abilities. But if you wish to look further in the topic, we do have computers and a "Bestiary", an Encyclopaedia of different types of mythical creatures in the History section. That could be a start of what you are looking for. I must go, before I miss this meeting with the Principle. See you later, Lucy."
I looked at the librarian, who quietly got off her seat and walked away from me, before it was just me in the Novel section. I knew it wasn't just me in the library, as I heard whispers from around the massive room.
Then it hit me. She didn’t ask me how I was or anything about the place. Was she just doing her job and not asking interrogations or was she respecting me, knowing I’ve got loads on?
I took deep sigh, remembering what she said and got up to look for this so-called Bestiary book I must be looking for in the History section.
I must've have spent at least a good half an hour looking for the book, with no sign of it. Was she lying to me? Was she trying to laugh at me? I felt annoyed at that thought and tried to calm down, by closing my eyes and taking deep breaths. Why was I easily getting angry all of a sudden? I'm hardly angry at all, I wondered.
Remembering that there were computers on the top floor of the library, I was heading to the stairs, when I saw Jasmine wandering towards me with a troubled face, in the corner of my eye.
"Lucy!" she whispered to me, while she surprised me with a hug, "how are you? I heard you just woken up the other day!"
I looked around, making sure that no one was watching over at us or snooping at us, when I squeezed Jasmine back.
"Ouch Lucy you're hurting me slightly."
I was? I was hugging her gently.
"Sorry Jasmine, I'm just happy to see you," I smile and moved faintly away from her and the hug.
"Let's go behind the English Literature section, so nobody will tell us off."
As much as I wanted to say no and look for information, I went with Jasmine to the deepest part of the back end of the library, where there was hardly anyone there.
"How are you anyway? You look so much better," Jasmine told me.
"Thank you, I feel better myself to be honest. At least I'm not covered in wires. Did you come all the way here to find me?" I wondered.
"Oh no, I was already in the library when I spotted you walking towards the stairs, so I just wanted to say 'hi'" she said sheepishly, whilst she was looking at the floor.
I chuckled at her before saying, "Well, I'm glad I got to see you. How are you anyway?"
"Oh I'm fine; I'm more concerned about you! The police are like, everywhere I turn and it's doing my head in! Seriously, everywhere I look, one just pops up out of nowhere!" she groaned.
"Wait, the Police are about still?" I suddenly turned anxious and irritated at the fact they are still hovering about for us, especially for me, "Are they waiting for me to tell my side of the story?"
Jasmine observed at the floor once more then looked back up at me, sorrow within her eyes and nodded slowly, "yeah they are bugging everyone, but since you were the one involved and they want you the most. By the way, that was the thoughtless yet very heroic thing you did going in the fire. I actually thought you were a goner, the way the building was collapsing, seriously I-"
"Jasmine, I'm sorry for making you extremely worried, yet I saved a life; Damon's life. I know I shouldn't, hell I know I'm going to get into trouble by the Principle and the Police, but I had to. I don't want to see anyone else suffer, as long as I live."
Jasmine stood there, with wide eyes, speechless at my speech, with her mouth slightly open. I could tell she wanted to know what made me say that, but she closed her eyes and changed the subject, "you're right. I'm just glad you're ok. I'm happy."
"Say, Jasmine, have you ever seen a Bestiary book here, in the History section? Just wondering that's all."
"Mr Salvador has got it. I've seen him about with it for the past few days, walking around with it in the halls."
Damn. I thought I could have it. But at least it exists.
We strolled back to where we first met in the library before going different directions, "Anyway, I better get off, and I don't want anyone stealing my bag and stuff. Don't want any more stuff happening in this place. See you around."
I walked up the steps and I wanted to go to a computer, where nobody was about or could come to bother. I was in luck. Hardly anyone was about and I just paced up to the computer and logged on to my college account.
After waiting several minutes until I was finally logged on and went straight onto the internet via google.
I typed in, 'people bitten with powers' and the results were coming up with people bitten by radioactive spiders or YouTube videos of '10 people with super amazing abilities'. That wasn't what I was looking for.
Next I searched, remembering what happened on that horrific night, I realised I need to search more towards the wolf man, so I typed in wolf man, but instead the topics were based on The Wolf Man movie, I added bitten by wolf man like creature and the next few parts were coming up strange and unusual, yet the word suddenly became fascinated to me; Werewolves.
Werewolves?
Why were the topics coming up as werewolves? Strange, I thought.
So I added ‘wolf man with hearing and eye sight abilities’ but more information on werewolves kept popping up. After a few meaningless efforts of trying to find what it was I was looking for, I started give up and considered at werewolves.
But this is where is started to freak me out. The majority of the stuff was what was happened to me and the boys; the high sense of smell, the ability to hear from afar and the amazing eye sight, not to mention that Jack now can't use his glasses.
The more I read more familiar I am with the remarkable yet disturbing stuff that had just occurred; after one bite.
But werewolves don't exist, I thought, so that's impossible yet everything was true.
It was about two hours and I'm still reading about werewolves. I had printed off several copies of websites based on werewolves and photocopied werewolf based books.
I was starting to freak out because this cannot have happened just because of a bite. Yet, my answers were all pointing to werewolf. But why was that? There must’ve been a different explanation. There has to be.
I logged out, grabbed my belongings and power walked straight to my room, hoping no one saw me how shaken I was.
I closed the door behind me and located the entire photo copying papers on top of my desk, whilst trying to find a highlighter.
Grabbing a yellow highlighter, I highlighted just the main skills I have already come across or what has already happened. Considering at the rest of the talents werewolves have, I noticed that I had yet to discover certain aspects, such as the healing factor plus night vision.
These seem too impossible for the information to be from a werewolf. That’s stupid! There’s no such thing as werewolves!
I slouched back into my chair, thinking that there’s no reliable source that can lead to me to whatever the hell we were bitten from or why were suddenly have these strange gifts!
Then it hit me; the Healing Factor. My injuries from the fire incident have been healed, counting my broken leg, which I was no longer able to walk at the time, obviously. This was including the boys.
They were all badly wounded, in fact, they were worse than me. They were coughing up blood, shattered ribs, legs, arms and hell; they were covered in tremendously wicked wounds and now, were all healed, as if we weren’t injured in the first place. Good as new.
I quickly got back up and highlighted that part, thinking over and over again that it all seemed impossible, that all of this seemed surreal.
Werewolves do not exist.
I placed the papers to the side and noticed that only time will tell.
I looked at the calendar. It had been nearly a week since the full moon and that means it’s about three weeks left until the next full moon. I felt my heart thundering behind my rib cage at thought of a full moon. Why, I expressed.
Until I heard knocking on the door, which took me out of my thoughts and got worried just to whom it was. If it was some person I have yet to meet or a tutor, I know they’ll be asking me why the hell to I 30 pieces of papers have based on werewolves alone.
What happens if it’s the police? Am I ready to tell them what happened, and tell the information Damon and the others told me what to say and do not mention anything about the wolf man?
They knocked again; louder this time and I knew there weren’t going anytime soon, unless I opened the door.
Did they know I was in here?
I got up from my seat and slowly head to the door, being extremely cautious to whom it was. I grabbed the handle, slowly turning it and opened it. At the door, saw a tall, dark brown hair man, with blue piercing eyes.
It was Damon.
“Did you find anything?”
I just looked at him.
Shall I tell the truth, that I’ve been looking at werewolves because everything points to them so far or shall I lie and say no and avoid the embarrassment?
