Another week went by, and more strange things started to happen, throughout our student lives. We noticed our hearing was very sensitive; when someone yells or screams, we flinch at the sound, coming from their mouth.
Our eyes were very HD, to which we could see every detail, from up close to afar. Jack had to explain the he finally got contact lenses, to people who were wondering why he wasn't wearing his glasses anymore, although we knew it was a lie. During gym when I was Chloe, Jasmine and Shannon, I noted as I was throwing the ball towards the person with the bat, I was throwing it was such strength that I actually placed a hole in the wall. I got unwanted attention. Max detected that our sense of smell was heightened and could smell from every individual's own smell, to rotten food from in the distance. While Damon observed something much more uncontrollable; our anger was more noticeable. We couldn't control it.
But we all noticed something that was very inhuman like and it happened to each of us when we lost control of our anger; we growled. It was a vibration the rippled from our chest and out from our mouths.
It was the most unexpected thing we have noticed so far.
But no one else noticed it. If one of us was losing control, we had to grab the person from their current position and we had to lead them somewhere, someplace no one else was. We needed to be in a very private place. So far, it was deserted classrooms and locked the door from anyone witnessing us. We didn't go back to the boys' toilet, just in case Ferah came again.
But when it happened to the boys, their eyes actually glowed. Their canines grew slightly and they even started to gain long nails. We did everything in our power to get back to their normal selves. Deep breaths were the main thing, for some reason, helped us.
I was the only one who didn't have glowing eyes, just yet, nor anything else happen apart from the one of growl. Although I did have the odd occasion, when I did see a glimpse of gold appear in my eyes, when looking at my reflection.
It was scary; knowing that whatever had bitten us had changed us.
Meanwhile Lee was still making Damon's and Max's life hell. Detention had been their best friends this past week, even the parents were involved.
I informed Jack and kept him up to date, too what had happened in the abandoned boys and toilets, which made him pale and lost his appetite for a while. He too started to help me in the library, to find more clues about us and this bite.
We still didn't understand where Shannon's question came from. The looks on our faces were confusing and odd, so we just let it slide and changed the subject, completely. We didn't want to worry the two girls of our current problem.
I was currently in my art class, writing notes beside my photographs, in my sketchbook; where I had taken them and what date. I was struggling for ideas to help me with the project. I wanted to experiment, but how.
The college has provided an art shop, to help students who have taken art as one of their chosen classes. This has helped me a lot, considering some of the objects they have are either expensive in town or you have to order it online, yet it's cheaper in the Art Shop, somehow.
"So Lucy, how is your work coming along?" a deep voice was heard behind me all of a sudden.
I turned around to see Mr O'Conner, walking towards me and my desk. He wore his usual weird, vibrant jumper that made him stand out from other tutors. It was an awful looking jumper, which I may add.
"I think, it's coming along fine...but I feel as though I am missing something," I explained, scrunching my nose and biting my lip, as I was stressed to think what to do next.
Mr O'Conner bend his back slightly, over my shoulder and placed his right hand on the table to help him balance, whereas his left hand was stroking his grey beard, while his eyes were squinting at my sketchbook.
"Mind if I take a look?"
I shook my head and handed my sketchbook over nervously.
Apparently, Mr O'Conner could be very critical about students art work. He told the truth at what he liked about their work and how to improve it. Rumour had it, he could make students cry or walk out of the studio. I hope that it didn't happen to me. He seemed not to be the type of person to do so. Then again, you do not know what happens behind closed doors.
About a minute or so had gone by, until he started to talk, "what is your work about? Let's start from there."
I gulped and replied, "My work is about various places I had been or travelled throughout my life, and I captured the moment or scenery I enjoyed at that place or time. It's more like reminiscence."
"Ok, could you tell me what the places these are from are?"
"Well, local parks, beaches such as Redcar, Scarborough or Whitby. Or cities such as Newcastle."
He nodded away, listening to every word I said, "And what type of camera are you using?"
"A DSLR. I've had it for a few years and used to take photos of nature," and it was quite dear too.
"Interesting. Ok, so looking through your work, I suggest trying out different techniques, than just taking photos. Have you ever used Photoshop?" I nodded, "then start overlapping your photos to create something different or even expose the photos and edit them slightly. It's all part of experimenting. I'll come and give you a tutorial in about a few weeks' time and we can discuss further about you work," he smiled at me and got up to move onto the next person, "you can even go to the dark room, if you wish too."
"Thank you, I take note and experiment more, Mr O'Conner."
He nodded and walked off to see someone else.
I quickly jotted down the small tutorial I had, reminding myself for after the lesson or day in fact to be over. As I was writing down notes onto the back of my sketch book, I stopped and heard heavy footprints behind me. Whoever they were seemed to be on a hurry.
I glanced over my shoulder slightly and noticing it was Lee, storming over to Jack, who was quietly painting with his Skull candy earphones, in his ears. Jack was nodding to head slightly, probably to the beating of the song, until he stopped, and turned around to see Lee on his way over.
Did he sense that he was coming over?
Jack sighed and pulled out his headsets and looked at Lee with a blank face, "and what do you want, Lesley?"
"It's Lee, you overgrown giant," Lee explained through his teeth, as he stopped in front of Jack.
It was true though; compared to Jack, Lee was slightly shorter than Jack, which made the whole situation so much funnier.
Jack crossed his arms and looked at Lee with so much hate. Lee pointed at Jack and said, "listen Jackie, you're a good kid so I'll just tell you this; will you tell the other two Musketeers to back off and leave me alone, yeah? I'm sick of seeing their two big heads everywhere-"
"If were Musketeers, then what are you? Listen Lewis, if I threw a stick, would go and fetch it and leave? You're the one who is interfering with theirs lives, you stupid baboon! You just think you're better than them!"
"Baboon? What the hell do you think you're calling, eh?"
"You, shorty! Why the hell would I want to do you're dirty work? You're the one who insulted his family! You're the one who called his mam-"
"That's enough, from the both of you! One more of this and I will ask you both to leave! Lee, back to your own desk and work! I thought you were adults, not five year olds!" boom Mr O'Conner, his face reddened and his neck was thick, with a very angry vein trying to escape his forehead.
I turned around back to my desk and shut my eyes tightly, with my ears starting to ring. I have been trying to get used to the feeling of my somehow new sensitive ears but every now and then, I realised it would take me a while.
Shannon noticed this and placed a hand on the back of my head, "are you alright?" her voice trembled, due to the tutor's outburst.
I didn't realise until I opened my eyes that I was shaking and dropped the pen onto my sketchbook.
Damon, who moved to be near me last week since be both were working on similar projects and sort of helped each out with research, heard Shannon and looked away from the sudden commotion.
"Lucy, are you ok?" his voice seemed unsettled and his eyes were searching for answer to my silence. I came to realise that he hated my quietness, my spacing out and sad facial expressions.
I gulped and just nodded, not trusting my voice at all.
"Are you sure?" Shannon asked.
Before I even properly answered this time, a bizarre sound came from behind us. Damon and I spun round quickly, wide eyed as well as knowing very well what that sound was.
Jack was crouched over, bending over, holding his stomach with his arms covering it. Max, who was sorting out his draws full of his drawings, came dashing over and quickly grabbed Jack before he collapsed, looked at Damon and I, with the same knowing look in my eyes. Damon's eyes turned hard and stern and nodded to the door.
He swiftly helped by grabbing onto Jack's shoulders and took his outside. Damon looked over his shoulder at me, making sure I was coming along. I nodded, but I knew people would ask if I left with them too. Mr O'Conner was shouting for the two to come back with Jack but the totally ignored him and made their way out to whatever was the closet yet very quiet place to be.
"What the hell was that?" Chloe asked, with her eyebrows were frowning.
"Where are they going? Is Jack alright?" Shannon worriedly asked, knowing well that she wanted to go with them, but I knew it was scary and dangerous to go with them, especially to what is suddenly happening to him.
Lee on the other hand, looked furious, "he's faking it! Attention seeker bas-"
"Finish that sentence off, and I will have your parent's in about your verbal language," the tutor explained, "everyone get back to your work, otherwise I make sure that everyone stays behind for an extra hour."
People groaned and went back to their work.
"Lucy, may I have a word?"
Mr O'Conner looked at me, working over to his desk.
I followed, not knowing what was going to happening, considering I already had a small tutorial with him. I knew several people were looking at me, including Chloe and Shannon, but I ignored their stares and looked onwards.
"Do you know what is wrong with Mr Long? I seemed to have a feeling he wasn't quite himself at all during my lesson," his voice was stern.
I knew I couldn't tell the truth so I had to lie, "I know he has been having a bad stomach and headache all day. He just couldn't afford to stay off."
He looked at me hard before looking away and sighing and I let go of the breath I didn't realise I was holding.
"Right. I think he should stay off for the rest of day," which made me surprise, "could you inform that to him?"
"Of course," I agreed, "I've got paracetamols in my bag, I could I give him them? I mean I could knock on the door and ask either Damon or Max to give him them?"
I knew it was risky asking this, considering I was a girl and I knew there was a high chance it won't work, but I knew I had to leave somehow to help Jack.
Mr O'Conner was hesitant at first but he looked at me and said, "Ok. I can trust you. Make sure you give him them and take his belongings as well."
I was taken aback since I didn't know it would have worked.
I quickly said my thanks, grabbed Jack's stuff and left.
I knew Shannon and Chloe would have bombarded me with questions, so I was glad to have walked out.
I carefully walked along the discreet corridor, trying to hear where the boys went. I knew too well they wouldn't have gone into the toilets. I walked past the toilets and pushed some red double doors with glass windows on then strolled on.
Then as I came closer to the end of the corridor to another set of double doors, I heard a sound. It was rough. I stopped, listening closely to where the sudden noise came from. I used my new senses and started to track where they were. I went through the doors, to notice that the eerie noise was becoming louder.
I gradually started to quicken my pace, towards to abandoned classroom. I stopped at the navy blue door, and looked at my surroundings, making sure no one was around, although I didn't sense anybody close by, I walked into the door and hurriedly shut it behind me, locking myself in.
I observed what was happening in front of me; Damon and Max each were on either side of Jack, grabbing his shoulders and were holding his arms up high, where we could see his nails lengthen and thickening.
Jack was struggling and squirming, trying to escape from his position and hold from the two teenagers, his lips peeled back, scowling at them both and showing us his teeth...his pointed canines. His eyes were glowing a harsh yellow, staring at me as I came forward, ever so slightly.
Without looking back, Damon shouted me over and told me to help them.
"Jack please! It's us! Your friends!"
I knew that wouldn't solve it, but I knew sometimes, things might help, differently.
"Jack...take deep breaths! I know you can hear us!"
Jack growled and pushed himself forward, but Max and Damon pulled him back towards the wall. He was getting angrier.
I took a step forward and placed my hand out.
"Lucy don't!" Max told me.
I didn't listen to him. I knew I shouldn't but I had to. My hand came forward to Jack's face and placed it on his left cheek. I made eye contact and stared at him, holding my gaze and made sure I didn't blink.
"Jack. It's me, Lucy. I'm your friend. Just close your eyes and take a deep breath."
He just stared at me.
"Please," I begged, showing the pain within my eyes.
Jack did what he was told and closed his eyes.
He took a few deep breaths before opening them. His eyes went back to his normal colour. His nails and teeth retracted back to themselves, making him normal again. He had a ghost smile placed at Lucy.
Damon and Max let go of Jack and watched him, making sure he didn't go wild again.
"Thank you," Jack said.
"It seems it's getting harder as time is getting on," Max observed, watching him carefully, "How are you feeling Jack?"
"Better than I was before," while looking at his hands, "but man, my teeth hurt like hell."
You could see the pain in his eyes becoming clearer.
"We can't continue like this! It's getting worse and worse!" I cried, "How much longer until it's all of us at one go?"
No one answered my question, because they know it's only a matter of time until we all were helpless.
Damon turned away and paced himself up and down the empty classroom.
"Damon?" I asked worriedly.
"I think I know what's happening to us or more like I know what's becoming of us," his pulled his hair back, looking tremendously stressed and painful at the same the same time. His words were saddened and annoyed.
Damon muttered something, but I couldn't make out what he said, since he whispered it silently.
"All of this, all because of this might. The man-thing, the hairy creature, the teeth, the eyes! Our sudden awesome powers! Hell there was a full moon that night! And you're research Lucy! We're...werewolves."
"What did you say?" My voiced started to shake with the look of disbelief across my face, thinking that my friends had grown two heads.
"Lucy, we were bitten. And from what you found out," Damon took a deep breath and looked at me, giving me a stare that felt very serious, "we're not human anymore."
No. Werewolves don't exist.
