TW: Mild swearing, violence, mild blood

Sitting up on the roof, I stared up at the sky.
"Why did Mama have to go?" I looked over to my big sis, who was sitting with me. I dangled my feet from the roof as the cold wind made my ears tingle.
Big sis seemed sad about Mama leaving, as her teardrops stained her cheeks. Big sis was 10 years older than me, and I was 12. Her name is Kiara. Mine is Elijah. Mother's name was Diana.
She leaned back and looked at the stars. I knew big sis had an answer to everything. "Maybe. . . Maybe God couldn't wait to see her. Maybe Mama had finished her purpose."
Sis noticed how my tears started to form again. She handed my teddy bear and I gripped it. "But why did he need to take her away from us?"
That was one question she didn't answer.

It had been 10 years. Mother was a good woman. She dedicated half of her life to helping the sick and poor. Doing good was the only thing she knew how to do.
But that got her into trouble. Trouble with people who could do a lot of damage.
Mother was a spy. She went undercover in the mafia and drug organizations and slowly took it down, from the bottom up. But she never killed anyone.
And that's why we're going to do it for her. We're going to do the thing she swore never to do, because it's our last option. To do what she could never complete.

"Where is he?" Kiara yelled, pointing a gun to the mans head. I watched from the shadows, letting Kiara do the work.
The man, who at that time was strapped to a chair, grit his teeth. "Shoot that gun. Come on kill me, woman."
I could feel Kiara's blood boil. I knew that if he continued talking like that, she would shoot him in an instant.
She cocked the gun.
"Kiara-" I interjected. She turned to me, eyes fierce, shooting daggers into my eyes. She let her arm drop to her side. I lowered my voice. "You can't kill him, Kiara. He's the only one who knows where the Don is."
"Yeah, you can't kill me even if you fuckers wanted to-"
Kiara pointed her gun at him again. "Shut up!" she screamed. He shut up pretty fast. She then turned to me again, and her voice turned softer. "I guess you're right. This is why you're here, Eli, to keep me from going fucking insane."
Kiara dropped her gun and the noise echoed around the room. She walked up, like a predator inspecting it's prey. She then gripped the young mans hair and made him lock eyes with her.
"Judging by your demeanor, you're scared, aren't you? You don't want to die. But what I want to know is, how willing are you to give up information to save your hide?"
The man muttered something in Italian, but whatever he tried to say didn't last long because he got punched. Again and again and again.
I could tell the man was trying to say something, or trying to breathe. That part I couldn't tell. Blood dripped from his nose.
"I'll say this one last time, mio amico. Where. Is. He?"
The man coughed out blood. And she picked up her gun and twirled it in her hand.
"Don't worry, I wont shoot you," Kiara continued, "I'll just beat you to death."
"Fine! Fine you crazy woman. The Don is in the white warehouse, on 32nd street. Can I please be freed now?"
Kiara laughed, a little too loud. I sighed, turning away.
The sound of a gunshot filled my ears, and from the corner of my eye I noticed the man slumped down.
Our car rumbled up to the back streets behind the warehouse.
"Are you sure you want to do this, Eli?" Kiara said, stopping the car. Sometimes I forget that Kiara cares for me. That's because she hasn't let anyone else love her, besides me. She says its for the best.
"Eli?" Kiara asked again. Its like she's a different person around me. I cleared my throat.
"Yeah, yeah I can do this."
"I know you don't like killing. But I have a feeling once we get in there, you're going to have to. I want to know that I can rely on you. To get the job done."
"You can rely on me. Let's go. Come on."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
The car was silent for a moment. All of this, all of this was for mother. We had spent our lives trying to track down the people who killed our mother and other people like her. This was it. And there was no going back.
I opened the car door. Kiara followed my lead. My vest made it hard to breathe. Or maybe I was just breathing too quickly.
Kiara jiggled the back door handle. Locked. I knew what I had to do.
After a minute I unlocked the door using a pin. We slowly made our way inside, having planned this for years.
In all of our plans, I was the distraction. I had no visible guns on my person, and was dressed like one of their guys.
Inside the warehouse was a fancier looking building, with carpeted floors and expensive lightning and couches. On the main floor, there were guys talking at a table.
And as Kiara quietly made her way up the stairs, I walked right in.
The guys immediately stared.
"Ah, Lorenzo said I should talk to you guys. I'm the new recruit."
They kept staring. One of them spoke up. "Lorenzo said you weren't supposed to come until next week. Who the hell are you? Some kind of overfed substitute?" He looked me up and down, and the rest of the men laughed.
I looked down at my bulletproof vest, covered by my jacket. "Its uh, been a while."
"Been a while? Looks like it's been years! Come over here, man, let me call my friend Lorenzo."
I gulped, as we had just recently killed Lorenzo. The phone rang and rang, then eventually went to voicemail. Then he tried again, and the rest of his men side eyed me.
"Huh, weird. I guess his phone is just turned off-"
Blood splattered my face as his hit the table. There was shouting. I think I tasted his blood as the men scattered around the room, hiding with their pistols. But they got picked off one by one, as Kiara was already on the second floor, sniping with precision.
This was when the party started.
Bullets flew past my head as the Italians shouted to each other, and I ran for the stairs. I knew Kiara had my back, at least I had hoped. My job was to make it up to the top room without being killed.
I ran as fast as I could up the steps, but I got greeted with another man who was on his way down. Before he could take a swing at me, I continued to run up the steps further up and kicked him down the stairs. I shot him in the legs after missing twice.
I hurried up the stairs once again, afraid what I was going to see after every turn. Thanks to Kiara, I only had to do that little maneuver once.
I pulled out my gun as I was running up the steps, and only took a break to see how many floors were left.
Once I thought I was up to the top floor, there was a man guarding the door, and he had the advantage by being higher up than me. Once again, I ran up to him, and my fight or flight instincts kicked in. I tried to hit him with the butt of my gun. I ended up missing and hitting his neck, but he howled anyway.
The little voice in my head told me, hit him again.
I looked at him, holding his neck. All of these sick people deserved to pay for their actions. And we promised to our mother that we would make them pay. Little by little, I actually started enjoying it.
Hit him again.
“Aah!” The man howled again, as I hit him exactly where I hit him last time. He put his hands up, in a gesture of surrender.
Before I could do anything more, I heard stomping up the metal stairs. I turned, knowing I was completely vulnerable.
“Kiara.”
She smiled once she saw me, wiping off blood and swear from her forehead, which just made it smudge across her face more. “It’s time, Elijah. They’re in there, probably hiding from the bullets like scared little politicians. Just follow my lead. And remember, I can do the killing.”
I nodded, and took the first step by opening the door, gun in my other hand.
“Everybody, put your hands up!” Kiara screamed.
Inside, like Lorenzo had promised, the all powerful famous Don was in there, on his knees like a scared little politician.
“How-” he started to say.

“Everyone is dead, Giovanni. And we’re adding you to the kill count. But I want to know some things first,” Kiara said, her voice a bit too chipper.

“Nobody move!” We heard another man yell.

It was the man guarding the door. And he had his gun pointed to Kiara, who had her gun pointed at the Don. I swore to myself.

Kiara eyed me, which in turn made the guard cock his gun, making a very audible click inside the tense room.

“I said, nobody move. Whoever you are, I have the advantage. Just who the hell are you, huh? Coming in here like you own the fucking place?”

The man started walking towards Kiara, who was frozen. I don’t think I’d ever seen her this scared in my life. Her face started to turn pale.

“Come on. Explain yourself. Might as well make your last moments worth it.” He walked around to the side of her, the barrel of his gun aimed at her head.

Kiara kept her eyes focused on the Don as she responded to the man. “I’m not explaining myself to someone who wouldn’t understand,” she growled.

“Kill the brat, Leonardo,” Giovanni said from the floor, his eyes wild in desperation.
196Please respect copyright.PENANABRs1G0ognU
But Leonardo seemed to have his own motives. As he walked closer to Kiara, he turned his back to me. From the shadows of this whole situation, I grabbed my gun from its concealed holster.
196Please respect copyright.PENANALUdkopdOxG
“You’re going to regret doing that,” I finally spoke, loud enough for everyone to hear.

“Who?” Leonardo turned around, prompting Kiara to spin around and shoot him. But she wasn’t fast enough, as Leonardo shot her back.

Both bullets went into each other's vest. Kiara jumped onto the man immediately and tried to strangle him. Leonardo gripped her arms and managed to get her off.

“Kiara!” I yelled.
196Please respect copyright.PENANAgfm4otaMhr
“Just kill the Don! I’m fine!” Kiara asserted, pushing Leonardo to the wall. He looked like he was losing. I looked at the gun in my shaking hands, and the Don on the floor.

“I can’t,” I said, quietly.
196Please respect copyright.PENANAiJAl74qeK0
Two gunshot noises.
196Please respect copyright.PENANA1Z5zpRILNK
I turned, but Kiara said, “I’m fine! Just. . .just kill the Don, please, Eli.”

I turned back around. My hands were shaking. I raised my arms.
196Please respect copyright.PENANAnzILfRTKtt
“Mio Dio, I don’t want to die,” Giovanni muttered.
196Please respect copyright.PENANArMmdqLttf3
I cocked the gun.
196Please respect copyright.PENANA9ChM4AMqzU
“Kill him!” Kiara screamed from the floor.

To end a life. To get the satisfaction of revenging my mother. To finish this for good.

I licked my lips, tasting someone else’s blood. Outside, the sunset cast an orange and red hue into the room.

To do what she could never complete.

“For Diana,” I whispered.

Sitting on top of the roof of the warehouse, I looked up at sky.

The world kept going it seems. With Giovanni gone, no one seemed to care. Cars kept going, horns kept honking, the world kept spinning.

And Kiara sat by my side, like always.

“Something doesn’t feel right. I feel empty,” she whispered, as we looked up at the clouds.
