Emmy sits there after I say that, silent. I continue looking for the basement door icon, and when I finally find it, I drag Emberlyn to her feet and through the icon. We drop through a tunnel and we're shot forward. We both land running, completely out of habit. So distracted and in shock we both almost run right into a wall. Emmy collapses, breathing heavily. I grab her by the shoulders and shake her. She stays silent. I start to panic, turning her head around to see if she hit it worse than I thought, but nothing I didn't already see is there.
"Aunt Mary is out there, Char." She stares at the floor, her eyes gleaming with unshed tears. I almost go to wrap my arms around her, but think better of it when I see the hidden anger shine through. Instead I just hand my head, pushing down the urge to punch something.
"I know, love. I know." I sigh, defeated.
"How did you know?" Her angry tear stained face turns to me, and I can see the gears turning. Now that we aren't running anymore I don't even have any reason to logically shut her down. I still try to at least play stupid.
"What do you mean?" I say, hoping she just gives up, but if anything, my question only hardens her resolve.
"How did you know? Before the bombs started dropping. You knew what was about to happen and you didn't warn anyone. You didn't do anything. Char, you didn't even think to tell me to make sure Aunt Mary was in a safe place. How did you know?" She demands, standing up. I push off the floor and stand in front of her.
"I'm sorry, Em. I really am, but I couldn't tell you. I still can't. It wouldn't really matter anyway. You won't remember this tomorrow." She stares into my eyes and I sigh. "You won't remember this, but I will." I caress her cheek, leaning in. She's stiff at first, but then she wraps her arms around my neck and I pull away, letting my forehead rest against hers. "I wish you could remember this, but you can't. I love you, Em."
