Emberlyn tugs me forward, grinning at me deviously. Her eyes twinkle and I once again find myself admiring her most peculiar trait, her blue left eye and purple right eye. Her bronze hair sparkles in the night and I almost trip over a little boy, so focused on her that I forgot we're in the middle of the most crowded place on the Alkina. Milyn. The rust colored buildings gleam in the moonlight and the moss and vines casts shadows along the windows of the complexes. Parts of the buildings are chipping away, and I shudder, remembering last weeks incident. Milyn may be quite beautiful at times, but truthfully, it's a horrible place to live. A small girl was killed by a falling piece of metal from one of the worn down buildings nine days ago. Her name was Sammy Vyntre, and by the end of the week, she'd been sent off to rest in the sea bed, and everyone important had forgotten it. The ceremony had taken all but an hour to complete, unlike those spoiled diamond's tradition of fynirly. Bronzers are used to Fynirly, seeing as how our death rate is so high. Diamonds, being all high and mighty, make a huge deal over the death of one of their own, keeping the body above ground for weeks, instead of just paying their respects and letting the poor soul rest. Poor Sammy was at least given a pieceful send off.
After the mourning had passed and we all had to go to work again, the Diamonds, silvers and golds all seemed to forget about little Sammy. The Bronzers remember. Even Emmy could hardly crack a smile in the days following the death. Her mother was worse off, seeing as how her sister had died a similar death. Everyone on Milyn had been observing a week of sadness in honor of the girl's death. Today, however, the spell was broken, and I can't help but feel eager to see Emmy and everyone else happy again. Emmy grip my hand as we bullet through the crowd, eager to get to our destination. My smile fades when I realize this will probably be my last week with her.
"Everything alright back there?"
"Ya. Ya. I'm good. I love you, Emmy, you know that, right?"
"Ya ya, hurry up! We have to get the the festival on time or my mom is gonna kill me!" I sigh, letting go of the tension in my shoulders.
"Okay. I'm coming."
