MACROSS 7: THE POWER OF WORD FORCE
Chapter 14: Mister Miyagi
The strange bus was rattling due to the poor road conditions, then went down a slope and into the lake. Such an event would have been alarming and all the more so considering that long mobility had all its seats occupied, yet no one attached the greatest importance to it, as if what happened just now were the most natural thing in the world.
In Zola, it was common to see amphibious vehicles, from all the boring passengers just only one seemed to be excited and amused by the crossing of the lake, an earthling who turned on his little yellow radio and covered with stickers of Japanese animation figures. The obsolete device started playing songs and anime tunes thanks to its USB stick.
Contrary to what one might think, no one looked at Utis, not even out of the corner of their eye, all of them immersed in their own thoughts and the earthling man shook his head to the rhythm of the joyful song.
The bus left the lake and started its journey along a dirt road again, at one of the stops the pilot got off and took out a piece of paper from his pocket.
“Well, let's see.... this girl Elma Hollie lives nearby," Utis said to himself while looking at the sketch of the place, "I think I'll have to walk a long way.”
Utis did so, and after a while he arrived at a small house next to what looked like a hangar, on the edge of a cliff that connected with the sea. The first thing he noticed was a young voice singing one of the songs from Fire Bomber.
"I guess she must be Elma," Utis thought as he saw the young lady immersed in one of Neki Basara's themes, she seemed to be sweeping the entrance of her house, but now she was holding the broom as if it were a microphone.
Elma had a graceful face just like her older sister Liza, but that was where the similarities ended. Liza had short reddish hair, while Elma had long light green hair and a long strand of standing hair on her forehead, which made her look very tribal.
At the end of the song, a series of applause brought Elma out of her fantasy world.
“Great, you have a beautiful voice.”
“Huh? Who are you?”
“Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. My name is Otonashi Utis and I'm looking for Neki Basara.”
“For... for what?” Elma asked somewhat suspicious of the man.
“I want him to hear my "song"," said the man with a wide smile and then turned on his radio.
“Oh, that's nice.”
“You can't find this kind of music on the Galaxy Network, if you want I'll pass you the songs, I have a lot of them.”
“Thank you, are you a singer too?”
“No, not at all.”
“But you said...”
“There is more than one way to "sing" and I want Basara to hear what I created.”
Elma was intrigued and invited the strange individual to her home, where she could learn more about Utis' mission.
“Wow, I've never met a writer before.”
“Well, I'm not a professional writer yet, I'm more of a fanfic writer...”
Utis was telling Elma about the fanfics when a very muscular guy came through the door. He had a face of anger that could frighten anyone, more than a human face, it looked like a mask, especially with all his voluminous and rowdy hair, without leaving aside the thick beard that seemed indomitable by all accounts.
“Dad, you're back, meet Utis, he's just like Basara, an artist.”
The man looked at Utis furiously.
"Hell, I hope this guy's not one of those paranoid, overprotective parents."
“How do you do, Mr. Graham?”
The sullen guy didn't say a word, just affectionately put his hand on his daughter's head and then went to another room, looking at Utis as if he was something disgusting that he accidentally stepped on.
Utis couldn't explain how someone so surly could have such a pretty pair of daughters. Liza and Elma did not look much alike, but he could not have guessed in a thousand years that they both had such an ogre for a father.
Elma's "cat-snake" looked at Utis with his three eyes and he must have made a strange face as Elma laughed afterwards.
The young lady explained that each person on the planet had a "cat-snake" at an early age, and together, the creature and its owner shared a kind of symbiotic relationship that lasted until the zolan died, both of them dying almost at the same time.
“Amazing. How I wish there was more information about Zola on the Galaxy Network. I find more of Ronaldo's stuff than this planet, it's not fair.”
“Yeah, I guess Zola's not that important.”
“Well, it should be, but anyway, changing the subject, tell me, would you like to be a singer?”
“Yes, very much so! My mom was a good singer and since I met Basara, I'm much more excited. I too... I also want to meet Basara again and have him listen to my song.”
“I'm sure he'll love it, at least I really liked the way you sang.”
“But I still can't find my own song...”
“Don't worry, the first thing is to have a beautiful voice and you have it. Composing comes later and although it may seem difficult, you will surely succeed.”
“But how do you know that what you compose is good?”
“Do the same as me: follow the advice of Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid, the original, not the remake version which I don't know why the hell they call it Karate Kid, Kung Fu Kid, it should be!”
"Oh yes, the advice! Just look in your heart, then it'll be good for sure.”
Elma was happier and they continued to share a pleasant conversation with Utis. In the end, Utis stayed for lunch and enjoyed it despite the everlasting look of disapproval from Elma's father, who said nothing nice at lunch, in fact, he said nothing at all.
