MACROSS 7: THE POWER OF WORD FORCE
Chapter 4: Sensations
The new day seemed radiant for Utis, at last the training had finally stopped under that hard and sullen sergeant. Now would begin the part where he could finally fly through the skies.
"Oh, I'm finally going to touch the clouds with my valkyrie like that rainbow pilot did. Full happiness in the middle of the day blessed by the star king who smiles at us all equally."
As soon as he opened the door and saw that a rain of a thousand demons was falling, it looked like dogs and cats were falling.
“No... my first beautiful first day as a pilot... he left for good," he said in a whisper.
The bad weather was no excuse and the lieutenant in charge was already calling Utis to go to the hangars where he would occupy the position of co-pilot.
“Goodbye, goodbye my beautiful spring morning, like the girl who did not accept my invitation to go to the Riviera beach... until never my first love.”
The valkyrie was a standard training model, the lieutenant would occupy the front seat and Utis would come in the back seat.
“Don't be frightened by the newcomer's kick-off," the lieutenant told him as he warmed up the engines.
Utis was expectant, he was curious, but part of him wanted to fly now, and part of him wanted to get off, surely the part that made his stomach mouth feel like it was trying to pass a stone because of nervousness.
When the valkyrie took off, he actually felt the "donkey kick", his whole body for a couple of seconds sank into the back of the copilot's seat, but when the ship was already in the skies something miraculous happened.
The unpleasant feeling of having left the stomach on dry land had made way for a very different one: peace and quiet in the heavenly vault.
Not only had the stomach with the unpleasant stone remained at the base, unable to take flight and reach him, it had also remained on the ground and frustrated, all hints of nervousness and fear.
The flight calmed down for only a brief moment, then the instructor performed several maneuvers to get Utis used to the training fighter's capabilities.
The pilot's suit had to be made to measure for the co-pilot because of his short stature, but he still did his job to avoid the feeling of the annoying G-forces that he felt at that moment when the lieutenant was performing his maneuvers.
“That wasn't so bad, was it? Now it's your turn, but no stunts, just basic flight, I'll tell you the route and altitude.”
Utis swallowed saliva and fortunately, fear was still at the base, apparently without being able to reach the Valkyrie.
After the flight that consisted of flying the transformable fighter in its three modes: Fighter, Gerwalk and Battloid, both men returned to the base. This time it would be the flight instructor who would land the ship, next time it would be Utis' turn.
.
.
“What, I'm not going to fly a Valkyrie!” Utis said surprised at the news given to him by Major Rubio Aristizabal.
“Quiet Corporal, you are going to pilot a transformable fighter, but first it would be good if you drove on your own an old Spartan model, its controls are very similar to those of the training fighter and I would feel safer if you first drove on your own and without the help of any instructor that big Mecha.”
Utis understood his superior's reasoning and prepared to pilot the Spartan Mecha in the afternoon.
.
.
Fortunately the bad weather had passed and Utis felt more confident for the task ahead.
This time there was no one to tell him what he would have to do, or make amends for his mistakes at the last minute. Everything depended on him.
Surely it was because he was back on dry land, as his acid stomach and fear had reached him.
“Let's go, Otonashi, let's go at once” the Major was hurrying him, impatient.
Utis was grateful that the floor was no longer wet, because he had the ridiculous idea that the Mecha would slip off with the first step. But as soon as the enormous war machine took the first step, it was as if it had suddenly advanced a thousand kilometres, leaving behind all fear and doubt, this time to never reach him again.
Utis finally understood the concept of "overcompensation", when guys with tiny phalluses were driving huge cars. Being in charge of something so vast and powerful made him grow.
His fingers were no longer tight, grabbing the controls, now his hands were holding gently but firmly the controls of the Mecha.
"Unbelievable, I've never felt anything like this in my entire life. I think I could take on a whole protodeviln army on my own."
Even his voice in responding to the Major's commands had changed, the same noted how he acquired a tone of confidence and command that he did not know he had.
After the exercise, Utis kept looking at his hands and forearms, surprised that they had controlled such a metal mass as if nothing had happened.
“I see you've got the hang of it," said Aristizabal, as he approached the pilot with a smirk on his face. “Don't worry about the look on your face, it's the same expression I've seen on hundreds of novice pilots, JA, I bet you I had that ridiculous look on my face too and those eyes shining with emotion.”
Utis was very moved, he wanted to tell the tanned man how much he thanked him for giving him this opportunity, but his mind was full of ideas and despite his dedication to being a writer, he could not find the right words to express himself for the first time in a long time.
“Sir,” that was what came out of the rookie's lips as he greeted his superior martially, who in turn understood and reciprocated the greeting of his subaltern who had tearful eyes.
