The sky was exploding with fireworks the night I was birthed into this world.
Delicate flowers illuminated by the deafening lights surrounded my body that stumbled and fell when it tried to scurry away from the harsh noises.
It was a terrifying thing to be welcomed into the world with. A sky shattering into a million pieces that fizzed and dwindled down to touch the air above me was already getting my heart hammering and my blood pumping when I cried out for protection.
I was only a shapeless thing, born from the darkness.
To take on a form, I had to find the shine of a soul light. It was a task already hardwired into my brain. Without having anyone whisper the words to me, I already knew what I had to do to survive in this confusing world.
The flowers around me offered no cover when I cowered amongst them. The sky still screamed and exploded around me anyway.
Frightened, I ran.
The field was large and terrifying when it was basked in light and the darkness played off the flowers that resembled monsters themselves.
I scurried for a large barbed wire fence and slid beneath it, the dark mist along my back splitting on the wire before reforming into my body that powered onward.
A large house sat at the top of the hill. The wooden supports holding up the front of it was serving as a protective roof for the family nestled on a picnic blanket beneath it.
They watched the sky with delight while snacking on an assortment of foods between them. A little girl stood before them in awe at the spectacle over the field. Her blue eyes glittered and reflected with each explosion, and her little mouth was dropped in wonder.
He light brown skin became washed out with each blinding explosion, her little hands gripping the front of her checkered green dress for comfort.
She was the one who spotted me when I stared in wonder at her. Immediently, I ducked down and covered my face when she started to walk towards me.
Her hands were so soft when they found my back to poke it. They ran down to my face that was lifted upwards to look into hers.
She was smiling the whole time while holding me. Even as the misty nothingness cascading over the flowers I huddled in, she was overjoyed.
And that made me smile.
Her hands wrapped around me to lift me upwards. The mist floated around her while she held my quivering body beneath it and carried it back towards her parents.
Immediently, I panicked and tried to escape back to familiarities. But with another fizzing explosion, I realised there was nowhere comforting to run to.
The little girl planted herself back down on the ground, a few meters from her watchful parents. I was pressed into her dress and had one arm curl around me while the other ran down my face and along the top of my head where my ears were flipped down.
She just stoked me gently while I cowered into her lap. Eventually, I mustered up the strength to lift my head up and watch the sky with her.
There was nothing to be afraid of while I was here.
This little girl was going to protect me if the sky came crashing down after all.
It was a warm feeling to be coddled like a pet. Every fibre of my being wanted to savour this warmth forever and never let it leave again.
The little girl was still distracted when I nuzzled my head against her and lifted myself up to press it against her chest. She let out a giggle that startled me as she wrapped her hands around me again.
It was warm and welcoming. Her body was like a soft pillow beneath my head that was lulling my to sleep as I listened to her calm, rhythmic breaths rise and fall.
I heard myself croon at the comfort. It was an odd clicking noise that she didn't seem worried about escaping my mouth.
She was like the mother i didn't know I wanted. My mother was not one of flesh and blood; she was the darkness itself. My life was plucked from the sky itself; where the souls of the passed turned into glistening stars, and was pushed into existence amongst the flowers.
And with each soul watching from the heavens, there were hundreds more in this earth; each with thier own light in thier chests that twinkled like stars.
This little girl had one, and her parents too. Each one was pure and untouched by darkness. Only demons could see the lights of thier radient souls.
I didn't want anyone else to have hers. I wanted to have her love warm me forever.
My fingers touched the golden light that warmed my fingers. I looked up to the little girl for guidance, but she was still mesmerised by the beauties above.
And, just like that, I melted against her soul to curl up in its warmth that shielded me from the explosions and soothed me to sleep.
