Everyone was sleeping by the time David got home. A open door, then a slowly closed one. He twisted the knob to retract the latch so it didn't hit the striker when he closed it. Attentively, one lock and then another. He then left his laptop bag slumped near the door, dead. There was only the kitchen light protecting him from the darkness.
At that time, he was pretty tired himself, no... He was wasted, carrying both a laptop bag in his left and two laundry hampers in his right. He also ate a Black Forest Ham footlong, which did bring his hunger close to satisfaction. At least, for now. He was even still wearing his uniform, which was full of sweat. He had the face of someone who didn't sleep for a century. And he only had at least six or seven hours of sleep. Insufficient, but there was nothing he could do about it.
A walk into the bathroom. A light, then hampers in hands, he set them down. And then he was, again, nude. Sneaking into his bedroom with a towel, he copped a T-shirt and underwear. He threw the belt on top of the dresser before closing the door, maybe waking up Kaylon. He again entered the bathroom, putting on the raiment in front of him and dumped Kaylon's pile of clothes in one hamper, Luca's pile of clothes in another.
Quickly, he sneaked into the bathroom. He almost fainted as his eyes twitched and he started to lose balance. He felt funny, was his nerves tickling him? Thankfully, he jolted awake and walked towards the kitchen. Grabbing an empty glass, he filled it halfway to the brim and grabbed a pill. A sish, followed by a couple of gulps and a dink in the sink's walls and stepped towards the closet. He pulled out the stuffed blanket and pillow there and threw them onto the couch.
The wolf, tired, was pussyfooting towards one of the doors. A small push with a small creek. When he opened the door to his bedroom, Kaylon, still shirtless, was sleeping as a log, laid out like a cat. As David looked at him, smiling, that's when he spotted the white hair. When he asked him the question. David thought it fit well with Kaylon, a little creamy white with a latte undertone. He was smiling a little bit, blushing minutely on his cheeks. He thought that, even though the hair was small, he could see both the resemblance and the difference of Kaylon now and before. Since that notion went into his head, he closed the door and decided not to wake him up to talk.
Small, heavy steps to the other door. When the wolf opened the door to the guest bedroom, he impressed a straightaway blank look on his when he opened the guest bedroom and stared at Luca. He did think that she was beautiful when she was asleep. Why wouldn't she be? She seemingly looked vulnerable and kawaii and all that shit, maybe something else... Maybe something like a fox. But the scene, that scene that he directed made it hard to smile and even easier to walk away. Walking softly, his ears heard a faint moan and the ruffling of sheets. After a few heartbeats had pulsated, he closed the door and snuck back to the couch. Enough to slightly wake her up.
As he went back, he didn't see his phone on the charging pad or his wallet there, either. They were still in the bathroom. get his phone, he could hear footsteps and then, looking back, Luca was standing there. It was obvious that she was a little tired, or a lot. Then again, she looked pretty normal to him. But then he noticed, the hair... It wasn't down to her shoulders anymore. Red chin-length streaks, instead, were combing the sides of her jaw. That, combined with the long T-shirt that she wore, made him believe that she looked a little like a tomboy. Even though there wasn't really anything masculine.
He smiled at the thought of Chloe again.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
David stared at her, blankly. "Getting my phone and wallet."
"No, I mean what are you doing? Why are you up so late?"
He thought for a minute. "Because I can." He yawned. "What is it?"
And the wolf met the fox, for around the first time since their awkward encounter. The wolf could've been hungry or carnivorous, but was instead regarding the animal in front of him. And the fox took in his look with caution and response, but wasn't looking to fight. It was looking...
Luca took in a deep breath. "Listen, I'm sorry for what happened yesterday. I.. still don't know what to think about it. I don't know if I did the right thing, but I don't think that you meant a..."
"I'm sorry."
The wolf caught her by surprise.
"what?"
And the animal walked up to her, glaring rather intensively at her. She was a little intimidated by his height, being only at least a few inches lower than him, and his glare. She was ready to run, if possible, from his attack. But he just... stood there, weirdly.
"I'm.. sorry, Luca."
He fished out his phone and wallet, then brushed his teeth and flossed for three minutes. Luca just stood there in silence, confounded. David took a quick look and then ignored her, he then went to the couch and tussled with the sheet and the pillow. They both would not behave, they seemed to want to extract fun out of him, instead giving him heat and wrestling with his legs. They didn't win. After a round of this, he then closed his eyes and went to sleep.
Meanwhile, Luca went to her bed and just looked up for a while. There was nothing interesting other than darkness, no detail in plain sight. And the door was closed once more, with light engaged in the same old eternal battle with darkness. The shadow wanted to play with her again, but she didn't want to. It covered her eyes anew with the blanket before she rejected it once more. Then again and again and again and again... Then, it dropped the act and metamorphosed into the mother, who calmed Luca in her arms and her warm, blank hug.
She didn't often dream. Or maybe she did, but her hard drive couldn't handle all that useless data. But it gave her enough to sleep and dream. But paint it any color you like, she wasn't having that much of a pleasant dream. And it started out weirdly enough. Father Time's hands were freewheeling through the surfaces and everything was black and white, she couldn't even recall that much after he had passed.
Dark backgrounds, silence, a parking lot. Then there were the sounds of something splattering somewhere. She couldn't see anything. First, it was her left ear, then her right. Then it took turns rotating around her. Rotating around her. Rotating around her. She had no idea what she could do. And someone was there.
When she entered deep sleep, her face still held that confusion, a freeze frame if you would like to call it that. And she didn't give off the same vibe as she once did.
