The young woman was looking at both Kaylon and David quite blankly while the duo stared back in a chary way. They were both stupefied that someone they didn't know knew their names and, presumably, who they were. The astounded duo did have social media but they weren't at all famous. Both Kaylon and David both verified that fact.
"Ok. hold on," David said, "How do you know our names?"
"Um, it's a bit of a long story," The woman replied, in a determined and serious tone. "But a friend told me to go to you guys."
"What friend? And, how did you spot us?" Kaylon asked. He turned towards his pal. "David?"
"I'm just as confused as you are," David retorted, "Since when does a girl pop out of nowhere, address us by our names and say 'It's a long story'?"
"Uh, I really need help here," The girl blared, "Can we maybe speed things up?"
"First things first," David said, "Who are you and how did you find us?"
"I'm Luca." The girl replied, "I just missed my flight back to Indiana. I have very little money, my phone just died a few minutes ago and I forgot my charger in the airplane. And that's about the only thing that I've lost."
"Ok, that's fine. Good." David said, "Who's your friend again?"
"More like acquaintance," Luca said, "We haven't really spoken to each other in a long time so this was more of an emergency. She lives in the same state, just a different city."
"What's her name?" Kaylon asked.
"Uh, Skylar?"
"Last name?"
Kaylon had the look of remembrance on his face. Glaring at the other, it was only a few seconds before David could tell on instinct that Kaylon remembered her. He tapped the former's shoulder, drawing his attention towards him.
"Is she talking about that girl you told me about years ago?" David asked.
"I guess," Kaylon replied as hushed as he can, "She's the only Skylar I know, but I'm not so sure."
Looking at the odd situation in front of them, David devises a mini-plan and had it over in a quarter of a minute. He responded in a whisper. "listen. go in and turn on my car and she if she picks up. i'll watch. if anything happens, phone 911 and get out of here, with or without me."
"I can do that." Kaylon answered, "But we don't know if she's gonna hurt us..."
"I don't know either, but you can't be too sure." David fumbled in his pocket for the keys and pulled them out to Kaylon. "Here are the keys," he murmured softly, "Stay in unless I say so, got it?"
"Yeah."
Kaylon then walked to the back of the SUV, opening the trunk and heaving his luggage into the cargo area, with some strain coming from his part. Aligning the trunk with the car took a bit out of his time before closing the trunk and climbing into the passenger seat. David surveyed from the distance prior to glaring back at Luca, if that was her name, as though she had the mannerisms of a malefactor.
They never articulated any of their questions or thoughts since the situation also turned awkward the moment they met. They both waited patiently, despite Luca's intent to resolve the situation as fast as possible and her natural impatience towards waiting. Being distracted for imprecisely a minute or so, David started to note her appearance. She was in between a petite and average physique, not to his surprise. The bruise-colored hand-print of twin dark circles began to arise from under her eyes. Her skin was Caucasian with a trace of tan in it, a perfect blend. She was also discernibly smaller than both him and Kaylon, by maybe two or three, maybe even four inches.
But what he couldn't understand was the color of her eyes. They were a mix of ocean blue and light sapphire. Either way, in his mind, her eyes shouldn't even have that much brilliance and saturation. They were the demarcation that bordered the other aspects of her body. When she started to grow either uncomfortable or defensive, he began to look away.
About two minutes passed before Kaylon exited out the car with his phone gripped firmly in his hand. He walked up to his pal and outstretched his right hand, fingers clenching the phone.
"She wants to talk to you," Kaylon said, "If you want to."
"Ok." David said, "Can you wait here while I go in the car?"
"That's fine, dude." Kaylon replied.
David walked into the SUV's driver seat and sat down, closing the door to his left. After reviewinf the situation, he thought this could've been worse but it pretty much was the weirdest situation of the day or week, maybe even the entire month. He pressed the phone to his right ear with that specific hand.
"Hello?" David asked.
"Hi," A female voice answered. It was gorgeous, to say the least.
"This is Skylar, correct?"
"Yes."
"Ok," David responded, in a tender voice, "If I'm correct, you are Kaylon's girlfriend?"
"Were you planning on asking me out?"
David chuckled a bit, even though it was not funny. But it definitely was witty. "You both seem to have a sense of humor. So, about the girl?"
"I used to live in Prescott, in a small neighborhood right next to a local high school. That's where I met Luca. We never talked much or really hung out. You can trust her, I'm sure of it. She wouldn't hurt people."
"How do you know that we can trust her?"
"Before her phone died, she told me of the situation and since Kaylon told me that he was going to hang out with you, you two are the only people she can depend on. She knows no one in Phoenix."
"I don't mind asking, but can you tell me more about her? And why she's in Phoenix? I'm just... interested."
"Um, not right now. I gotta go run errands, but if its okay with you, can you give me your phone number just in case?"
"Why? Not faithful?"
She shouldn't have chuckled. But it seemed that she knew his intentions and chuckled in response. "No. One, you seem like an interesting person. Two, I would like to tell you the rest when I get back."
After that, they exchanged phone numbers and David wrote the number for Sky on a scrap of paper with a pen in the glove compartment.
"Alright, have a nice one today." David said.
"You too," Skylar responded, "Bye."
David hung up soon after. He opened the Contacts app and typed in Sky's full name and her phone number, before saved it. He once again exited the vehicle and walked to Luca and Kaylon, with the latter telling the former something amusing. Her face showed that she was listening and enjoying the topic and Kaylon, contrary to his usual persona, was serious throughout.
"You guys doing ok?" David asked.
"Yeah, we're fine." Kaylon said, "I told her about the memory that I remembered on the plane. You should've seen her reaction!"
David smirked. "Yeah, I bet so. Hey, can I talk to Luca, alone?"
"Go on ahead," Kaylon said, "I'll wait in the car."
"I'll be there in a sec." David patted Kaylon's back as he left. He then shifted his unmitigated beam of focus to Luca.
"How much money do you have left?"
She scoffed. "Seriously? You're asking me that question?"
"I'm trying to figure out everything here. And I get that we don't know each other well. I'm being dead fucking serious. How much?"
Luca then sighed, annoyed. "About a few hundred dollars, give or take."
"College?"
"Yep. Real pain in the ass."
"Do you have anyone else here in Arizona?"
"I was staying at a friend's house. I don't want to give her trouble again, she's been really busy."
"Is she up in Prescott?"
Luca was taken aback. "What?"
"Never mind, it's none of my business."
David walked over to the back of the SUV with Luca a little ways behind him. He stopped at the front of the trunk and looked straight into Luca's eyes.
"You want front or back?"
"Excuse me?"
"We're referring to the car. Front or back seat?"
"Back. I'm not stupid."
"Ok then." He attempted to open the trunk, but it was locked to his dismay. He knocked on the rear windshield of the car, grabbing Kaylon's attention.
"Unlock the car!" He shouted through the windshield.
Kaylon did so, with a mechanical click of machinery verifying the maneuver. David then opened the trunk and watched as the door slowly ascended, then turned to Luca, noticing the luggage she was carrying.
"Do you want me to get that for you?" He asked Luca.
Instead, she picked the luggage up and hauled it into the back of the trunk. She then closed the trunk and glared at him, while he goggled back at her in shock.
"Thank you, though." She then went into the left side of the car and buckled up.
Unusually, this pent up frustration and anger in David, who started to feel his heart give out and his thoughts become unraveled. Struggling to regain his temper, he let in a deep inhale and exhaled in a pique. He only muttered under his breath, "little shit"
He then entered the car, buckling into the driver's seat just as he let the door close on its own. Observing that Kaylon started the car, he looked back at the passenger seat. He was on his phone, looking at some videos or whatever. His mind was certainly somewhere else, other than reality. Luca was just staring out at the window, bored.
At that instance, David examined a micro-USB cable plugged into a USB charger in one of the cigarette lighters. The thought of Luca's dead phone then came over his mind. Looking back at Luca through the rear-view mirror, he decided to ask her.
"Luca," David asked.
She looked back at him. "No?"
"Does your phone use micro-USB by any chance?"
"No."
"Then, what do you use?
"Type C."
"Ok." So one of the newer ones, he thought. Not really a big deal, but he didn't have that cable, obviously. "Alright, well, I do have to run to the store and get some groceries. Maybe we can get you a new cable there, Luca. How about it?"
"Cool."
"Alright, let's go." David said.
David then turned off the parking brake and shifted the transmission clutch to reverse. Carefully watching through the side mirrors and back windshield, he backed out of the parking space slowly and warily. Once the car was near-perfectly aligned with the road, he shifted to drive and slowly moved forward. Everyone was somewhere else.
While taking the right turn out of the section, Kaylon tapped his shoulder.
"Hey." Kaylon pestered, "Hey, hey. Hey, David."
"Can't look right now," David replied.
"No, I have something to say though."
"What?"
"This definitely feels like Elfen Lied."
