Chapter 32: Failure
At the castle Amoxious sat on the throne, signing off on some paperwork when the double doors opened to allow in the guard who had begun the chase in the marketplace. The guard approached with caution before saluting and stood tall to try and mask his nerves. “I’m sorry report Emperor but we have yet to find them. We were tracking a suspicious,” Amoxious shifted his narrowed eyes up from the paper listening, “man in the market some time ago but he vanished after an ice mage appeared then also vanished.” The guard gulped as he saw a frown start to dig its way onto the ruler’s face. “We um have yet to relocate him.”1100Please respect copyright.PENANANSRGDrM3TZ
Amoxious kept his eyes on the man, lowering his pen and brushed the tray with the papers away with the server girl. “I want that man found and brought in for questioning, immediately.” He growled lowly in an eerily calm tone. “Did anyone see his face in full to confirm if we have a fifth fourth suspect?”1100Please respect copyright.PENANAP244kijku3
“No my lord, sadly no one saw his face. It was hidden by the hood of his cloak.” The guard nervously delivered this news, taking a small step back that he hoped wouldn’t be noticed by the shadow demon.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAqBlwPdFLCl
The demon snapped his eyes towards the guard’s feet and began to snarl, baring his fangs menacingly. “Well find him,” he began to stand, “and find out who he is!” Amoxious snapped loudly in rage as he finished standing with a slam of his fist into the arm of the throne. He watched with seething impatiens as the guard stumbled back with a pitiful nod before scurrying away.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAoqWMaK8dvv
Amoxious sat down with a groan, pinching the bridge of his nose with his eyes closing as stress filled him. “I could have sworn I slaughtered all the idiots. It seems I missed a few.” He complained under his breath with annoyance. Slowly he opened his eyes when he heard a tapestry ruffle. “I do hope you have good news for me.” He shifted his sights to see the hanging fabric move aside as the woman had a pleased smirk on her lips, stepping over to him with a bit of a sexy saunter.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAGehwoJBmVG
Once the sun had set and nightfall had come, at the farmhouse Marenzo stepped outside for some fresh air. He closed his eyes while leaning back against the wall of the structure, inhaling deeply then exhaled with a quiet sigh. As he relaxed he began to gently scan the surrounding area near the house for anything threats.1100Please respect copyright.PENANA44scwqw79E
Carefully in the shadows of a resilient tree line, an archer in the shadows raised his wooden bow already strung and ready to go. He reached to his back, drawing an arrow and knocked it, pulling the string back with little noise as he took aim. The archer took aim for Marenzo’s chest as he was going for the heart. The string came to a stop as the archer’s raised thumb came to his earlobe and there he paused to ensure his aim would be spot on.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAhvyHyxDgSS
Marenzo in his spot twitched an eyebrow, one ear twitching as well as he tilted his head downward a bit to rest his chin around his collarbone. He shifted his stance some, overlapping his hands behind him so his body rested on his arms. He lifted one leg and bent it so now one foot rested flat against the wall behind him, his eyes not opening nor did his body tense.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAIjkQWy5lvA
The archer kept his aim steady and his breathing quiet behind his fabric mask. Moments passed before the bowstring was finally released with one more, slight quick tug back. Upon the strings release the arrow was thrown swiftly forwards towards its target. The archer grinned with sharpened teeth behind the mask, feeling a soft breeze brush against the flesh of his face that wasn’t covered. He felt sure he had done it as he watched the arrow whistling through the air come to strike its target while the vibration of the string gradually came to an end.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAeBpnSugQlC
As the arrow struck Marenzo there oddly was no reaction from the wizard. This confused the archer who leaned forwards a bit and squinted to try and see if any blood was there. He saw none and what nailed in this wasn’t the target was him seeing the body flicker before fading. The archer’s eyes widened in shock and he looked side to side before freezing upon hearing a breath behind him. The hair under his hood started to stand up on end with dread of who he would see behind him. The archer slowly turned around more only to gaze behind him a glaring Marenzo. Marenzo also wore on his face with the glare a twisted grin as he lifted one hand into the air.1100Please respect copyright.PENANA3wLPZz4rTs
Before the archer could draw out a blade the wizard snapped which quickly caused one ring to glow, casting more eeriness to the wizard’s face. The spell cast was fast and silenced any scream when the man opened his mouth to try and breath. When no breath came in the man’s eyes soon rolled back into his head and his body fell limp, dropping the bow before his body followed suit to hit the ground. Marenzo sighed as he shifted and jumped down, landing quietly to the ground before looking down at the body. No wonder mother likes that spell, it’s very effective. He thought to himself as he knelt down to start searching the corpse. Now…how about you show me who you belong to? He would search until finding and pulling out a chain.1100Please respect copyright.PENANApFwEJ6wGcg
Once the chain was pulled up he saw the attached rounded disc which held worked in the metal an emblem. This brought him to frown when he saw a serpent baring its fangs atop an arched shape similar to a traditional gravestone. “Damn it, that’s not good.” He muttered before flipping it over to find a design fitting Natta’s flag. Shit and here I was sure I hadn’t been followed. Damn it! The wizard snorted as he stood, ripping the chain identifier free of the body. It wasn’t like the archer needed it in death. He figured if the one didn’t return then more would come to see why and that he wanted to avoid.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAacWCjakaSg
Marenzo briskly stepped back to and inside the house, going to wake Nate only to find him up getting a small snack of some dry meat. “Nate, wake Sophia and Alura. We’re moving to another location.” He ordered in a hushed tone, the disc of metal with its chain held sternly in his grip.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAnlkpQlglnE
Nate turned his head to look at the wizard as he popped a torn off piece of meat into his mouth. “Why?” he questioned in-between chewing. “We’re safe here.” He swallowed then popped in his second piece of food. “No one would think we’d be in here.” He explained then swallowed before shortly after releasing a tired yawn.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAV97w0yukMD
“I just killed an archer who tried to kill me. I don’t think it’s safe here any longer.” He held up the disc by its chain as he walked up to Nate that had started to move towards the hall to go back to bed. “I found this on him. We should go now before more come to see why their comrade has yet to return.”1100Please respect copyright.PENANAZggMderjls
Nate sighed with a shake his head seeing the piece of metal craftsmanship. “We’ll discuss it more in the morning.” He stated before taking the item and sniffed it before returning it to the wizard. He moved to the door and stepped out to start sniffing the air as he also listened with his keen demon ears. “Don’t worry so much. We’ll be fine, trust me on this.” He said to reassure Marenzo as he opened his eyes to look at the young man that came out as well. “I don’t feel any danger around us nor do I hear or smell any danger.” He explained confident before he placed a hand on the wizard’s shoulder. “Get some sleep before you go crazy from loss of rest.”1100Please respect copyright.PENANAzRB2B5gy07
After that the demon released the wizard and made his way back inside, stepping down the hall to return to the room he and Sophia was sharing. Marenzo growled with his jaw tightening along with his grip on the item. Releasing a frustrated noise, he tossed the item onto the ground, grinding it into the dirt roughly with his shoe. After a short time he released a heated breath before shaking his head. Maybe I am being paranoid but still…to just dismiss me? Stupid demons but…I hope he’s right. Marenzo thought as he looked up to the sky then around the area again before stepping back inside. He closed the door and went to his room that was next to Alura’s, deeply hoping Nate wasn’t mistaken about there being nothing coming.1100Please respect copyright.PENANA4cpoumNbgI
The night advanced quietly but this quiet was not a good thing. To the sleeping groups dismay the quiet sound of movement started to softly kiss the stilling air. A small group of about ten men with bows on their back approached the house. Carefully each took out a hand sized round disc which the ten discs were placed around the structure just so. Once the devices were in place, nine of the ten backed up to leave the tenth to move around the building as he linked the machines together. He returned to the start and once all were correctly attached to the other he pulled out a fuse.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAB0vpINSCTL
He attached it to the center of the links on the one disc and brought it out some before lighting a match, applied the flame and quickly leapt back. The sizzle of the fuse disappearing filled the air with the nine then tenth man drawing their bows and each one knocked an arrow, ready to fire and shoot down anyone who may try to flee. As the light faded into the first disc, the links on either side began to glow as they disappeared. The flame had set on a trail to each machine, vanishing inside each one. With each flame going inside it caused a yellow dotted line to illuminate around each ones surface.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAZJwCwPt3J4
Rin watched this and once the last one was armed she from her shadowed place pressed a button on a handheld device. That set the activation signal to each one simultaneously. That peace was then destroyed once one disc then the next in rapid succession exploded in a raining fountain of flames, and glowing amber sparks. The house went up in flames like a candle or a piece of paper tossed into a fireplace. No one inside had time to react before the flames were enjoying their meal.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAxZscqZLO9a
The archers kept ready until there were so many flames they decided to lower their arrows, grinning behind their masks with joy at the showing reality of their triumph. The demons victory did not last as long as they would like. They did not even hear their leader give the order to pull back before a sharp yet quiet noise sang out. This happened as a strain of hair thin blade shot out to swing across the area. As it sliced through the air the ten men fell dead, their heads falling off their bodies before their bodies also fell in two with a sickening noise. Rin frowned snarling and jumped, dodging a similar fate and took her leave when she saw blue hair entering the open part of the forest.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAJuDQGRxdWn
The man twisted his face in clear disgust at the sight and smell of death. Lifting one hand he waved it through the warm air, having his hand glow blue and brought forth dark clouds that, once formed, began to rumble then rain down on the burning scene. Ginsu let the rain continue as he listened to the hissing hate of the flames towards the rain as he neared, making his way inside the burning structure. He enveloped himself with his water to keep cool making his way to the two young ones rooms. The God of Water hesitated as he looked inside Sophia and Nate’s room. His heart hurt seeing them unconscious and in each other’s arms while being devoured by the uncaring flames.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAg3cUi9y1Xd
He continued and made his way into first Alura’s room then Marenzo’s, grabbing each to carry both out at his sides under his arms. Using his water to protect them three he got outside, which he then dropped the shield of liquid that split into two drops that could fill one cup. Those drops went to the faces of Alura and Marenzo, slipping in past their lips to slide down their throats. At first there was nothing but suddenly there was a sharp inhaling gasp from them both before hard coughing came at the end, alongside panting for air between coughing fits.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAVNbZKtOPPl
Alura would be the first to groan and start to stir as she opened her eyes. Her sight was blurred but began to clear with the dying flames in the rain filling the air with sound. “Wha…where…” she crooked out, slowly gaining her bearings before starting to turn and then lift her head to see who had a hold on her. “Ginsu?” she questioned confused to be seeing the youngest God brother. “But…what are you doing here?” sadly for her, her question went unanswered as Ginsu moved away from the flames before setting her and a coming around Marenzo down on ground.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAOdoFUiigaj
“Ginsu, why are you so quiet?” she asked but as he looked away from her and closed his eyes, her eyes turned towards the dying flames and her confusion turned to horror. “No…no, no, no,” she whispered sharply with an inhale of breath. It took her no time to start wildly looking around for her parents only to see them nowhere in sight. “……No…..” she whispered as she began to shake her head in denial. “No, no, no, no, NO!” she screamed loudly at the end, tears slipping down her cheeks from her tightly closed eyes.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAdTMrBBUJOn
“This can’t be happening!” she screeched as she opened her eyes, stood and ran for the house now less in flames. Ginsu quickly and gently wrapped his arm around the teen’s waist, holding her back with a heavy heart as her body shook with her sobs. “This just can’t be real!” she screamed in a broken voice in thanks to the falling tears which began to mix with the gentle rain. “Mother!” she called out desperately. “Father!” she hoped so badly to hear a call or see movement but that wish would not come to be true as the remaining flames met their end with the soft cool droplets.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAmVnQyG6bGU
A sound of clapping came from the side of Ginsu, in the direction of the roadway leading to the city. This noise brought Alura to sniff with a hiccup and wipe her red eyes while looking over to see who was there. Her brown-blue orbs widened with her jaw falling but for only a moment. Her jaw quickly tightened with her eyes closing into a deadly sharp gaze as the male figure came into view, clapping his white gloved hands slowly with a gut twisting smirk on his lips. “Damn you! Why did you kill my parents?!” she barked out in a heated growl, not taking long to make up her mind he was the mind behind this.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAtYfcVPwIPk
“Your parents?” the shadow demon questioned as he dropped his hands only to have one raise and press its fingertips into his chest. “I have no clue as to why you would accuse me of such a crime. I also would not have had any idea there were two of them.” Amoxious’s stated in an innocent voice with his eyes closing and face falling. That cocky crooked grin did not stay gone long before it slipped back into its place with his eyes opening to watch the half demon teen, letting a chuckle escape to add to any taunting his amused expression was causing her.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAf5QC1FBZPQ
“I’ll kill you!” Alura screamed with a rage burning in her eyes as she snatched Ginsu’s sword off his hip, racing towards Amoxious with the blade and started to swing it quickly at his body. She wanted to slice open his chest and destroy whatever was in place of his heart.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAhcUe84Osp4
Amoxious laughed as he stepped back and moved side to side, easily dodging her wild swings. “You are out of your league, little girl.” He taunted while his lips slid back in his joy, baring his demon fangs. When he saw an opening he ducked, slid forwards, and kicked up all in one motion into her gut just below her ribcage. Her eyes widened as the air was thrown from her lungs, her body thrown up and back with another kick as he stood. He dusted himself off while clicking his tongue in disgrace as he heard her body slam into the ground with a sliding stop.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAJxNYazmjyB
“Such a violent temper, it’s so befitting an animal but…” he gave an over played sigh while adjusting his gloves, “I thought human speaking beasts had more grace and manners.” He shrugged his shoulders while lowering his hands to his sides. “I guess when one comes from unclean blood then their mind is bound to be loose.” Amoxious chuckled as Alura regained her breath and stood, glaring and growling. He held his hands out at his sides and after a short glow of dark light, two blades appeared with one in each hand. Once they had formed and solidified he closed his fingers around their hilts, tightening his grip before lifting them to hold them crossed like an ‘x’ shape in front of his chest. “Come on then, show me what you got since you seem demented enough. That is…” he paused, “if you have the guts enough.” He purred enjoying how easily he could rile her up.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAGaMcsgpUJb
“Don’t listen to him Alura. Just stay calm and remember your training with a clear mind.” Ginsu instructed in a voice that was both calm yet raised to try and ensure his former student heard him, since she wasn’t looking at him. “He wants you to be blind. One not thinking is easier for slaughter.” He sighed as he watched her charge forwards at Amoxious. The Water God held a hand out towards the smoldering ruins, bringing out one of Alura’s normal swords, guiding it over and after a miss he got her to take hold of the second blade.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAm4yu0yxapG
Quickly she started darting from left to right in a zig zag form to get closer before swinging one blade up then down from his left shoulder to his waist, or that was her target area. He quickly dodged and blocked her next swing with one blade while he swung his free blade at her side. Just in time she maneuvered her first blade around to meet his with a sharp clang.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAHHfmR4UGvh
Ginsu watched the pair exchange blows with clangs and the sound of steel grinding on steel filled the air. He bit the inside of his cheek, wanting to step in and blast Amoxious away but refused to act on this urge. He had orders and if he broke them then he was well aware of the hell to be paid. Marenzo began to watch this and was stunned then shifted his eyes to see what figure stood at his side. “Are you going to help?” he asked quickly only to see Ginsu shake his head in a silent no.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAk8nEugLAZD
As the blows continued to be exchanged Amoxious started to grow bored so as he swung his blade out to counter hers, he ignited a spell of shadows. These shadows took hold of the blade as they met, allowing him to twist one blade out of her grip to throw her off as he swung his second blade at her chest. Alura stepped back and released a yell as her arm was sliced but in thinking she saw an opening, took a swing to try and slice open Amoxious’s throat.1100Please respect copyright.PENANA9IFJXsoJbZ
The shadow demon leaned back with one step as he swatted the weapon away with one sword, thrusting the other as he came back up at Alura’s neck. The teen moved her head to the side with a hiss, feeling her skin break and the soft trickle of red to slip from the fresh flesh wound. Another three exchanges and she fell back after tripping over her own feet in dodging a swing of his sword. He twisted her remaining sword out of her hand and pointed one of his blades towards her throat, just allowing the sharpened point to hover above her trembling skin as she was out of breath. Amoxious stepped closer until he straddled her, crossing his blades down to have their edges against her flesh with his body lowering closer to her tried and angered face. “Awe why so angry? Are you perhaps mad that I was right?” he questioned sweetly with his charm which drew from her a harder glare and her jaw to clinch.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAsx1CXEAOUo
“I wonder…since you’re but a pitiful Halfling what happens when you die. Will you go to heaven like your human mother or go to hell like your demon father?” he asked as if were some kind of trivia game. “Which way will you go?” he pondered aloud with a sweet tone before chuckling as he pressed a button on either of his forged blades. The weapons separated in the middle with steam shooting out. This allowed him to pull up while leaving the original bladed ends crossed over Alura’s throat to keep her put as he drew forth two shorter swords.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAft6darxP90
He knelt down so he was practically sitting on her belly as he began to trace her jawline with one short sword’s blade. “Like mother like daughter, only thing is your mother had more beauty than you.” He stated with a pleased express that changed to one of displeasure at the end along with his tone. “Too bad, it would have been lovely if you weren’t something so horridly tainted.” He cooed as he ran the other blade along her collarbone at an angle then down her chest, tracing above her breasts then down between them delicately so not to slice her open.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAoA4mQhDBZB
Ginsu growled gripping his fists tightly while watching this, deciding on what to do and when to act. Marenzo wasn’t going to be so patient and wait for the moment to strike. He began to mumble something below his breath, staying in his crouched position to the ground as in one hand he began to charge a spell. An orb began to form and shine along with four of the rings, his eyes locked on the demon. Ginsu shifted his sights to the wizard, one ear twitching but he couldn’t make out the words being said under the young man’s breath. The swirling energy formed what if one could see it be a light tribal outline of feathered wings as more energy swirled.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAtpa5S77ZWY
Finally when it was charged enough the wizard muttered a final word and let it fly, throwing the orb hard at the demon. By the time Amoxious looked over after hearing a sound, the spell had slammed into his body and pushed him back a good five or so feet from Alura. Marenzo hastily raced over to her, ignoring the blades that cut into his hands as he gripped then pulled to remove the crossed blades, and threw them to the side before helping her up. He kept his hand closed, allowing her to grab his arm as he pulled her up. “Thanks,” she saw the blood starting to trace around his closed fingertips, “I’m sorry,” she said quietly only for him to shake his head.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAPirPdQMvoZ
“It’s no problem. Don’t forget I have magic.” He reminded her gently as he began to use a spell to close the cuts. Amoxious remained motionless and silent until a growing quiet chuckle resonated into the air. Both turned and Marenzo glared in anger as the demon began to sit up then stand, brushing dust and debris off himself. “How are you able to move?! That should have paralyzed you!” he snapped before his jaw tightened with his shoulders tensing and fists clinching. Stupid light, it always goes off in the wrong spots. He thought irritated.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAvwPMWTeDCG
Amoxious began to step towards them, starting to recall one of his short swords. “Shocked? Such a spell is nothing for my-” he was cut off as suddenly a sharp pain came to his realization at his side. He closed his eyes tightly as pain twisted his face and he dropped the sword, his hand grabbing his side to feel it wet and warm with the stabbing irritant. His legs almost buckled under him but he stayed standing as he looked to his now stained gloved hand in disbelief. Quickly he shot a glare of daggers towards the pair then right to Alura. “You bitch! When did you touch me?!” he roared his accusation without any doubt.1100Please respect copyright.PENANATAbx2CiNUy
What’s he talking about? I couldn’t even scratch him. She thought baffled but not wanting to let his ego feel she was below him, she brought a grin onto her face as she put her fists on her hips. “When you weren’t looking,” she said cockily as she released a laugh. “You stabbed at me so I sliced your side before I went down. It went all according to my plan.” She answered calmly yet proudly in herself. Ginsu was shocked as he had been watching and saw no such touch or maneuvers from his former student. Releasing a quiet breath the Water God put it together but didn’t enjoy her playing this up, he didn’t want this to return later to bite her in the butt.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAxhgYOnY3PX
“Just like Nightryne.” Amoxious snarled in disgust, spitting on the ground with the name as he narrowed his silver orbs on her.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAqPVkjVFdti
“Nightryne?” she asked confused. “Who’s Nightryne?”1100Please respect copyright.PENANALPtpnleNBm
“Oh you don’t know? I guess you wouldn’t.” Amoxious responded with the last words spoken in a lower tone. “He hid it well from his own love so I apparently should not have had expected anything less with his sinful spawn.”1100Please respect copyright.PENANAwElV8OhnKL
“Tell me what you’re talking about, now.” Alura ordered sternly, moving and picking up one of her blades.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAgLiX2uLHTI
“Maybe you should ask your God about it.” The demon instructed as he stood upright, keeping a firm hold on his wound that continued to spill blood. “He should know all about who I speak of and of many other truths you do not yet know.” Amoxious cooed with a sly smirk pulling onto his lips. “He was quite informed, I heard, about everything that is to come.”1100Please respect copyright.PENANA9AeU4YTciT
Alura lifted one eyebrow in confusion before starting to turn around. “What’s he talking about Ginsu?” she asked as she looked up at him with confused eyes. Soon after they made eye contact the Water God looked away, feeling unable to meet her eyes at this time. She looked back over to see Amoxious had fled, steams of black smoke rising out of the ground from where he once had been. She returned her attention to the blue haired God as he took a step back from her. The teen moved around, circling him and got under his face to try and make eye contact. “What’s he talking about Ginsu? Tell me.” She ordered firmly. “And why are you avoiding looking at me?”1100Please respect copyright.PENANAkCduOpGTTa
Ginsu diverted his eyes from hers again, turning his head away and closed his eyes with a heavy sigh. “I’ll tell you later,” he began with a gentle shake of his head, “but not now. You are not ready for that information after your loss.” There was a pain in his tone as he stepped away and around her to put some distance between them. “I’m sorry but I must go. Stay safe.”1100Please respect copyright.PENANArpjOb6XMdB
“No! Wait!” she cried out as she raced over and reached out to grab him but he vanished in the blue light of his water magic. Alura growled gripping her fists tightly before the hand holding the weapon threw it, having it bounce and slam into tree with a bad clanking before it rested silently at the base of the wooden structure. “Why won’t he tell me?” she asked through gritted teeth, her shoulders tensing as thunder rumbled overhead.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAyJ9fL5QWou
Marenzo watched her silently but approached when a gentle rain began to fall, gradually growing harder and heavier. “Come, let’s go to town and find some shelter, explain what happened and get Flora back on track since Amoxious has left.” There was one thing about war and soldiers that he knew, and that was without the head giving orders the rest were easy enough to take on for removal.1100Please respect copyright.PENANAY3MLPcUvsm
Placing a hand on her shoulder he began to get her to move, guiding her towards a town and see about what they could do in Flora’s restoration. He also thought others who knew the couple would like to help them prepare and put to rest their bodies. Not even the dead deserve to be left inside destroyed remains. He thought as slowly Alura began to walk at his side, resting her head against him as he wrapped his arm around her while they left the scene.
