Chapter 24: Father
Four days passed with Marenzo and Alura lying low as they waited for the flame of Syubi to calm and the eyes of the guards to lessen so they could make a move. Finally on the sixth day things began to ease and calm down, making them both happy and more relaxed. “Now what?” the teen girl questioned from the sofa she was laying on, looking at its simple fabric pattern. “How do we get to my father now?” Alura asked softly as she turned her blue-brown gaze to Marenzo who was sitting at the table eating a late breakfast.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAwoKEZBnBMB
She felt bad she hadn’t been able to free him the first time, one hand reaching into her pocket to pull out the pieces of crystal she had collected that day, and her face reflected this nagging emotion that felt hard to let go of. She turned her sights on the crystal pieces and she felt failure creeping up through her heart. Maybe I’m not as good as my father was…was I just being delusional before?1257Please respect copyright.PENANAjGXLOQpWYy
Marenzo took a bite of his eggs that he had positioned on top of a pancake and a slice of crispy toast. “To start, you are good for you. Maybe stop comparing yourself with your more experienced parent?” he suggested with the food kept in his cheeks to prevent losing any of it during his speech. He swallowed and turned his attention to the girl now. “Where did you get the odd blade?” he asked with a small nod towards the corner where her swords had remained wrapped up with her bag.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAjIViy2xHUF
Alura met his eyes then tore hers away to look towards the weapons. She saw a shimmer of blue from a small fallen corner and found herself biting her lip. He waited for her to answer but after about a minute to three, he took a breath after another bite and spoke after swallowing. “Well?” he gently pushed since she had yet to answer.1257Please respect copyright.PENANArVSt8haTju
“I….” she began slowly before growing quiet. She didn’t feel as if she could tell him. What would he really think of her if she told him a God gave her that sword? She didn’t want trouble or anything to happen. After some moments she returned her sights to his as she spoke up. “I can’t tell you. You’d think I was insane.”1257Please respect copyright.PENANACGJY1epnrz
Marenzo chuckled lightly at her words. “My own mother tried to kill me. I don’t think you could be more insane than that.” He smirked having a point proven to her.1257Please respect copyright.PENANA1IAvzJPlNW
Alura admitted to herself that he had a point. Speaking about a God wasn’t on the same level as his mother’s actions. Returning her sights to the sword she took a calming breath. “….A God named Ginsu gave it to me….as a birthday gift on the day I left him and his brothers.” She explained quietly as she shifted her uncertain orbs back to the wizard. She wasn’t sure what his expression would be or his reaction.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAYlpDGmfD0r
Marenzo had on his fallen face a look of shock and disbelief. Alura saw tis and began to regret telling him, feeling sure he was going to either have her leave or lock her away. Slowly Marenzo’s stare started to change as he watched her eyes to see if she was joking. He also was checking her mind to see if she was kidding only to see it was the truth. “Wow,” he whispered softly, “you must be, or are, great to be accepted by a God and great enough to be given a sword.”1257Please respect copyright.PENANADlfvlRBG2G
“What?” Alura asked stunned with a small jump at such a calm response. “You…you don’t think I’m crazy?”1257Please respect copyright.PENANAIEGdfYhcxU
“Nope, why should I?” he asked curiously, finishing off the rest of his food.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAT2HyO8k5yn
“Uh….no one really believes Gods still exist or so I heard and so…thought if I told you you’d think I was insane and lock me up.” She admitted somewhat sheepishly.1257Please respect copyright.PENANACsw7DZ3hFM
“No way!” he exclaimed with a chuckle, standing from his chair and walked over to her before calmly placing a hand on her back. “You’re too much fun!” he pointed out with a wide grin. “Why would I lock up a person who saved my life?” he asked as his grin that stretched from ear to ear remained.1257Please respect copyright.PENANArjY1ChM7Ph
Alura looked up and smirked before slowly grinning in return, giving him a soft nod. “So now what?” she asked after some moments of silence. “How do I free him? Ginsu said his sword could free my father but…I don’t remember what he said about how to do it.” She trailed off into thought, gazing to the floor silently. Suddenly she jerked to her feet and quickly made her way to her bag, pulling it close as she opened it to start going through it.1257Please respect copyright.PENANArQq2uvHZeu
Marenzo watched curiously as Alura located and pulled out a book, starting to look through it quickly. She saw a couple other spells had shown up but nothing for breaking spells set by a God. Marenzo simply observed her as he pondered over the book with text on its binding in a tongue he couldn’t read. “Is that a gift from the Gods as well?” he finally asked after a minute passed of silence from him.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAATQCW6Hu3b
Alura nodded wordlessly, still searching but found nothing which brought a frustrated exhale past her lips. “There isn’t any spell to help in here. This sucks.” She complained as she slammed the book closed. “How am I to free my father without knowing what spell to use?” She groaned slamming the small book back into her bag.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAglWmVFzaDX
“Why don’t we try some of the spells in that book? Maybe if you practice them, then it’ll come to you or show up somewhere.” Marenzo suggested to be helpful or he thought it was.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAzSh7YdqEYv
Alura rolled her eyes at that suggestion. “That won’t work.” She quickly dismissed as she stood. “Man what did Ginsu say to me before I left?” she asked as she started to pace around the room, ignoring Marenzo’s frown at her so easy putting down his idea without trying. She folded her arms, lowering her head while her face twisted with thought. That thoughtful expression turned to annoyance as she stopped in her tracks, bringing her hand up to hold her head as her jaw tightened and lips curled back into somewhat of a snarl. “Crap I can’t remember it.” She released a frustrated roar that screeched at the end as her hand slipped off her head, curling up and started gently to firmly hit head with her fist a couple times.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAmxE89kkH3z
Carefully Marenzo began to approach Alura as she released a heated breath with her eyes shut and her fist down at her side, trembling with emotions. “How did you use magic before coming to Zento? Have you ever been able to use magic before the dungeons?”1257Please respect copyright.PENANAGftSjEiULm
“No, never,” Alura answered shortly with a bit of a snip in there, keeping her eyes shut. “Why?”1257Please respect copyright.PENANAGhTwYAfdSR
“Did you really want what happened in the dungeon?” He inquired during his slow steps closer.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAv0e8Zrpn6c
“Yea….I did.” She stated sternly, opening her eyes to look at him as she wondered what he was getting at.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAG26f21P3AO
“Here is what I think and know from being a wizard.” Marenzo began before clearing his throat. “If you want something badly enough it’ll come true.” He stated as he quoted a teacher he once had at the same time as he raised one hand and pointer finger up, then he turned that finger to point towards Alura. “You wanted to save me so you naturally summoned a spell to save me. Same thing for wanting to get out,” he paused watching her eyes start to narrow a bit, wanting him to get to his point so she could free her father. “I think you don’t really want to free him or you’d be able to feel it and summon up the magic to do it.”1257Please respect copyright.PENANA5HDTIDp2E9
Her jaw tightened and she jerked moving towards the wizard, causing him to back up and his hand to lower some but ready to spring back up. “How can you say that?!” she snapped hotly at him with a hard glare.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAyf0mZsjSaj
“Well?” he asked quickly with a moment’s pause before continuing to try defending himself. “How else do you explain it?” his words made her grow quiet and her glare began to soften as she looked down, not able to think of an answer. Seeing her calming down he relaxed and spoke up after letting a short period of silence to linger for his words to fully sink in. “Let’s go back and try again. If you really want him free then you’ll be able to do it without thinking too hard.” Carefully he moved and softly touched her shoulder, speaking gently. “If it’s something you want badly enough then you can free him and go do what you want.”1257Please respect copyright.PENANAw2dPmM50Ib
“….You have a point but…” she looked up to him then down to the floor closing her eyes, “I can’t. It won’t work.”1257Please respect copyright.PENANAhvGUaCYLkt
“You doubt your own powers?” he asked sighing and removed his hand from her shoulder. “Seems those Gods believed in you enough to trust you with one of their swords and a book on magic. Guess they see what you can’t.”1257Please respect copyright.PENANAWbWqcDYPJ2
“What….do you mean?” Alura asked opening her eyes and looking up to Marenzo.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAYECd0K7u1v
“You are strong like your dad I’m betting and I’m thinking that’s why they believe in you so much to take care of things without them escorting you everywhere.” Marenzo pointed out confidently.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAhJVnR8yCAo
“You…think so?” Alura asked carefully, feeling better but still unsure about this and in her abilities.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAW76Qsp8Fyo
“Sure do. Now, what do you say we go and try to get back inside that cave and free your dad? I’m sure he’s sick of being in there and doesn’t want to stay there forever.” Marenzo said confidently, watching Alura nod as she made her way to the weapons, pulling on her swords and sighed.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAamN3LrVo5h
“Okay, let’s go. I want to free him.” She said sternly as she picked up Ginsu’s sword and put it on her back. She felt ready to go with deeper determination in her eyes this time to free her father and save her mother. Marenzo nodded seeing a change in her and started out first with her following behind.1257Please respect copyright.PENANApWuvnmO9Ju
They made their way down the path until coming to a stop later, several feet away from the cave. Two guards stood at the cave on high alert as Alura and Marenzo peeked over the top of the hill they hid behind. Marenzo smirked as he noticed they seemed to be more on edge. He turned his head to look to Alura who crinkled her nose and brow in wondering how they were going to get in. “Watch this.” He whispered and as one lifted hand glowed he started to walk his fingers over the grass in front of them, using his pointer and middle fingers.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAgcUiFeJ6gg
Down the hill showed images of Alura and himself walking past the guards. The two guards watched then quickly ran after them as Marenzo moved his fingers faster making the illusions run. He chuckled at their stupidity and Alura’s amazed expression before standing while lifting her up with him. He wasted little time in proceeding forwards and pulling her with him down the hill to the cave. “That will buy us some time. But we can’t make a lot of noise or they’ll come quickly and that I don’t want happening.” He instructed softly to Alura who nodded silently. “Good, I’d like to not get into a fight with them.” He said at the end while advancing into the rock formation.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAedzbAcsOAW
“I’ll be careful this time.” She whispered as her steps were quick to match his to reach the back quickly. Once there it was still beautiful as ever, making her adore it more before she sighed as she remembered why they were there. She drew her blue blade and faced it at her father’s prison focusing. Come on…work. Work damn it! Alura thought while narrowing her eyes on the crystal. Work…please work. I haven’t any time to waste if I want to save mother. She watched the crystal as nothing happened.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAWJwSVnaB2u
Her grip tightened around the hilt then loosened so it was firm again instead of choking the blade. She took a deep breath before exhaling slowly while closing her eyes, remembering her nightmare about her mother. I can’t let that nightmare become real. I just can’t let that happen to mother. She’s done so much for me… she took a slow breath as slowly memories from the past began to reply in the front of her mind. …and…I have to apologize and admit to her what I did back then even though…she’ll be mad…I can’t lie to her about what I did anymore.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAW3Ta8YjkKy
Her eyes closed tighter with her brows furrowing a bit. I stole the real necklace that Amoxious used as a base to create the fake to frame her, and used that as a reason to take her away. I…I can’t let that stand based on that lie. Alura thought as one hand gripped the hilt a bit tighter with her jaw clinching a bit. I’ll kill him and free her after I free father. I can’t let anything more happen because of Amoxious and I won’t let that war happen. Marenzo watched in the silence disappointed that nothing was happening until he started to notice some movement from Alura’s shirt. It won’t happen…it won’t…it can’t…1257Please respect copyright.PENANA2JRKknkLbW
Slowly wind began to swirl around the blade, drawing with it droplets of water which added up to cause both water and air to swirl around the weapon. This magic began to strengthen with her focus and the images of what could happen, flashing before her mind’s eye. Then…if the war does come I’ll…I’ll…lose…my family…and………Marenzo… with that last word the blade began to glow blue as the swirling water shot from the blade and into the crystal.1257Please respect copyright.PENANACgV0Pr8Sp8
Without opening her eyes she lifted the blade above her head, bringing it down at an angle to the right then to the left. This shot out energy which slammed into the upper and lower part of the crystal, adding to the cracks and breaks in the solid surface which had begun to spread. Alura opened her eyes slowly to see the pieces fallen until her gaze widened when the structure broke open.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAzzr95BTOzD
Marenzo smiled as he saw the crystal structure give way from the force of the assault. She did it. I knew she had it in her. He sighed watching the chunks of crystals fall and shatter like glass tears. Guess Ginsu did too. He thought as he saw Alura shake herself out of her amazement at having really done it, the blade resting now on the ground.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAUVmZ77THdU
As each piece fell, Nate’s face began to show more clearly in its dark and battle ready state. This display did not stay as it slowly began to shift from the demon form to human skin and features. Gradually his body fell forwards from the lack of support, his hair that had grown longer flowed behind him as he fell and hit the ground with a limp thud. “You did good Alura. You actually freed him.” Marenzo complimented but Alura didn’t hear him as she stared in awe at the sight of her father in the flesh.1257Please respect copyright.PENANA9OuBRRt1uJ
She swallowed as she shook herself out of her daze upon hearing him groan, dropping the blade with a loud clang as her legs carried her over to kneel down beside him. Her dry throat tightened as she started to shake him, trying to make him open his eyes or to speak so she’d know for sure he was alright. A small piece feared she may had injured him but when he groaned again she decided to take that as the only indication she was going to get he was fine. Carefully she took hold of his arm and started to lift him with a grunt, struggling to lift his body after putting his arm around her neck to rest over her shoulder.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAumXrrtLqhE
Marenzo pushed off from the wall and walked over to Nate, helping her lift his upper body and smiled. “Where to?” he inquired lightly with a caring and proud-of-her smile.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAG9noxuj6yY
“We have to get to Flora fast. I don’t want Amoxious hurting anyone more than he probably already has.” Alura stated quickly as she moved, seeing Ginsu’s sword left on the ground. Marenzo moved his free hand and one ring slightly glowed with its engravings as the heavy blade vanished, appearing back in its sheath behind her. She nodded her thanks as they continued after their very brief halt. Yes! Light! She thought seeing the opening of the cave.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAKnYyN3x3Jc
It wasn’t long before this jump of joy slowly sank into hate as a soft click and jingle sound entered the cave, echoing off the stone walls with a small shimmer catching her eye. Alura looked down and gasped as she saw her mother’s necklace bounce once before coming to rest on the stone floor. She came to an abrupt halt, quickly leaving Marenzo to sustain Nate’s deadweight alone while she went back to get her necklace. Marenzo nearly fell over with a yelp from this sudden move, shooting a slight glare back at the teen. A warning would have been nice, even a warning thought. Damn women, never giving a good man a heads up. He thought in his complaint, releasing a snort which made his nostrils flare.1257Please respect copyright.PENANA7Icv6h9RXR
Alura picked up the necklace and sighed, holding it close to her chest in a closed hand before quickly securing it again behind her neck, this time tying then latching the thin chain. She put the pendent part down her shirt as she spun around and returned to the wizard. “Sorry,” she whispered softly with a nervous laugh while retaking her spot under her father’s right arm.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAvufh0w1oNG
Marenzo sighed but nodded his forgiveness and they were once more headed to their freedom. This freedom turned out to be proven wrong as when they broke out into the sunlight they were greeted by six blades, each one of the swords pointed at their faces which brought them to a complete stop. “Greeeeat,” Marenzo mumbled under his breath with a small eye roll to accompany his groan of distaste for their situation at weapon point.1257Please respect copyright.PENANA2HC81t5E85
Alura gulped then growled glaring at the guards then shifted her narrowed sights to the sound of horse hooves, and the familiar jingle of jewels. “Lovely the wicked mother is here.” She muttered under her breath as she glared at Empress Syubi who was sitting sidesaddle on her stallion behind the guards.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAU9epn2V6qN
Syubi glared down with her cold stare and displeased expression that seemed like stone. “I waste naught any time for you both.” She snipped shortly to them. “You both are hereby under arrest on charges of treason, attempted assassination of the crown, theft of royal jewels, and for freeing a beast after illegal escape of my dungeon.” She explained in her royal sharp tone.1257Please respect copyright.PENANA1YZcGSvCCZ
“You are a complete…” Alura growled with her glare still on Syubi who also was refusing to break eye contact, “a…a complete bitch!” she snapped sharply at the dictator woman. She continued as Syubi frowned at this insulting name. “You think you’re all great because you control a stupid country. Big damn deal!” the teen barked heatedly, her body tense as she felt a strong desire to protect her defenseless parent. “I am doing more than you can ever do!”1257Please respect copyright.PENANAZcqGCaTPvx
Syubi did not like this insinuation as she felt she did plenty. Ruling a country was not easy even in the slightest sense. The filthy urchin has no clue what it takes to please more than just one subject. The Empress hissed in anger in her mind before speaking up, her back straight in its saddle and her head held high. “Little girl, you will be executed for misconduct towards the Empress.” She hissed coldly before lifting a hand which she extended towards the trio. “Now seize them!” she shouted strongly and her six guards moved closer, making Alura and Marenzo to have to step back.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAtWIHRcZtUb
A soft wind blew, causing strains of Alura’s hair to dance about her face and a soft noise to whisper through her ears. “Light of flame,” she whispered as she slowly dropped her head, “light of soul,” she dropped her head a bit more to hide her eyes by the shadow of her bangs. “Light of air, release the beast within the heart.” Slowly her body tensed before pulsing once then twice as her breathing deepened into almost a wheezing sound. Marenzo took note of this change in noise and glanced over, about to ask if she was alright before holding his tongue as he observed a change happening.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAfQd2zWVdXR
Her skin of her arms and around her cheeks then neck had begun to darken with small black specks, which seemed to be growing out of her skin. Her jaw tightened then her lips moved to appear to be snarling. This displayed the formation of fangs growing longer. I can’t let her imprison father after I just freed him. I can’t let her allow mother to die. She thought as those black growing specks began to take on the appearance of black feathers. Her back tensed as a growl escaped her throat, flames shooting out of her back at the same time as four black and bloody wings came out with a sickening sound. Slowly she tilted her head up to lock eyes with Syubi, a bit of blood redness had started to enter and consume her natural brown-blue eye color.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAkjbx3OJABz
Syubi stared in shock as the soft sound of the thick blood fell in drips from the moderate sized wings, not big enough to fly but enough they couldn’t be missed too easily. Gradually Alura finally moved her body as her nails had begun to become sharper and more pointed. She had shifted and adjusted Nate to rest more on Marenzo, which he noticed how her movements were careful like a predator or prey, with her eyes never once leaving his mothers. “Take Nate to an airship.” She ordered in a rough voice which startled the guards that took a step back. “Go to Flora.”1257Please respect copyright.PENANAkzPx7ISZfX
Her change in voice to something almost demonic and appeared to be limited words brought slight concern to Marenzo’s guts, which felt twisted as more black feathers appeared to grow in around her neck, face, and arms to make her flesh appear blacker than the darkest night. He nodded and, quickly as he could, moved with Nate to the side, giving her room to let her do as she wished since he didn’t want to get caught in anything she was planning. “Fear, don’t fear,” Nate began to mumble groggy into Marenzo’s ear like a whisper. The wizard turned his head listening for more, “fear the beast of midnight’s hour.” The man finished while on the wizards back.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAGhGsDsdmit
“I said to arrest them!” Syubi barked sharply at her trembling men. Alura grinned as the men moved forwards to follow their Empress’s order. Marenzo moved back a few more steps, following the side of the cave as he watched. Her body flickered then vanished when her wings flapped down once, splattering the faces of the men with blood as they slid to a stop confused. This confusion ended as pain took its place on their faces, moments before blood sprayed out of their necks and sides.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAxGwUuJKGRP
Syubi’s eyes widened as more sprays came into the air before their bodies collapsed, their heads falling with sick thuds to the ground one by one. Alura, as she heard this, gave a demonic grin and chuckle as a certain dark spot inside her heart felt great pleasure with that noise. Alura started to stand upright while ignoring the blood that dripped and stained her right hand with her claws. Syubi stared in shock and slight fear as her men were executed faster than a blink of an eye. Demons were not common on Zento, or at the least, not demons like Alura.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAIVAPdQhzNX
The horse in this blur of a moment released a loud and frightened nay as it reared backwards, kicking its front legs wildly until she fell off and swiftly galloped off. Alura walked over and stood over the woman on the ground, grinning then chuckling when seeing the fear inside Syubi’s eyes and faintly on her face. Slowly Alura kneeled down before gently brushing the bloody, black claw over the side of Syubi’s face as if she were caressing a child’s cheek to comfort them. Her grin simply widened as the redness in her eyes had spread but had not fully enveloped her normal coloring.1257Please respect copyright.PENANA8ZahalxKcP
“Scared?” the teen questioned softly as she moved her face closer to the Empress, her careful touch and grin gave off the aura of a beast looking for more blood to quench its thirst. “What ever became of all that power you boasted to have, all that power you displayed a piece of when we were locked up?” Alura questioned with a dark chuckle that sent a chill down Syubi’s spine, leaving her speechless as she regained herself mentally to prepare to speak. Alura’s smile then slowly faded as she moved a little closer, inhaling deeply the woman’s scent before speaking with her exhale. “He already has been here, right Syubi?” she asked not pleased to find a scent her demon senses recognized.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAESWT35x7ky
“Perhaps,” Syubi began with her composed self, her sights hardening on the half demon beast before her. “If you speak of Emperor Amoxious then he may have paid me a visit.” Those words brought the frown to deepen slowly as Alura removed her hand from Syubi’s cheek. “He may have invited me to a ceremony but…I’m not much for events as what he has planned.” She sounded as if she were displeased and pouting. “Things end much too quickly in that fashion, it leaves no fun in seeing the life leave their bodies.”1257Please respect copyright.PENANA8YSme8JG3C
Alura snarled as Syubi shifted her eyes away from the girl, roughly grabbing and jerking on the collar of the woman’s outer robe. This brought Syubi to look right into Alura’s blood craving eyes. “You best tell him he will die if harm of any sort befalls the woman named Sophia.” She snarled in a deeper warped voice, her nose nearly touching Syubi’s. “A demon is not as so forgiving as some boasting witch.” Gradually the demon girl began to release the woman’s robe collar nicely but ended gave a sharp shove. Before fully standing, an idea came to her and she acted on this thought. She stabbed her claws of her bloody hand right through Syubi’s shoulder, bringing a small scream to exit the woman’s painted lips.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAeQCOgisMbS
Marenzo observed this and it brought his stomach to twist in discomfort at the sight of the blood, as well as due to the behavior of Alura. He hadn’t been around demons often nor had he been around her longer than a number of days, but it felt off for her to act in the manner of a beast. He heard the sick noises as Alura took her time moving her hand around inside the grown woman’s shoulder before finally jerking it out, letting blood fly out and soak the fabric as she stood fully.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAmM4CKCqwKU
Syubi held onto her shoulder while biting her lip to try and hold in any sounds from her pain after the second cry had exited her mouth. Her eyes closed tight did not see but her ears heard the steps of Alura leaving. Alura was walking away from the Empress, leaving her to tend to her own wounds. The girl made her way to Marenzo who gulped, seeing her darkened form with even a few black feathers dotting her brown locks. His legs felt like they wished to collapse from both the full weight of Nate, and the internal fear he felt at her behavior and appearance.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAqUpknQb4jc
Alura stepped up to then past Marenzo and Nate, not stopping her calm yet tense steps as she proceeded to make her way towards the nearest airship docks. “Coming?” she questioned in her rough voice without looking back at the wizard. When no answer came she glanced back with her red eyes, not looking pleased. Quickly Marenzo nodded and stepped quickly as he could to catch up and followed behind the teen. Inside the wizard hoped she wasn’t going to attack him next, hoping she wasn’t going to become a mindless beast that held just one main thing on its mind: blood.1257Please respect copyright.PENANAeUHJfBP8pT
