Episode 4 Continued - Make it Mine
"So you found the so-called murderer?" the captain said, sipping his tea.
"This fast?" officer Clington stated, setting his hand on the table. "Impossible! This case has been trumpeting us for ages!"
"I did find the murderer, captain," Yumi stated honestly. "And yes, I found it this fast."
He just scoffed, leaning back in his seat. "You say that with such confidence. And who is it then?"
Master Yumi just set her elbows on the table and set her hands together, hiding her smile with them. "Let's wait to discuss this for a moment. I think you might need to relax for a moment, captain, do you not?"
He just stared.
"You've been hiding the secret forever," she continued, and I stood by her side, closing my eyes as my smile remained there. "Did you seriously think you we wouldn't figure it out?"
A small bead of sweat slipped down his forehead. "What are you going on about?"
Officer Clington just blinked, sinking back in his seat. "Wait... are you suggesting that Capitan Craig is the murderer?" He gazed up then. "He has no motive! Why would he do such a thing?"
"I'm not suggesting that at all," Yumi said calmly. "Why don't you have some tea and crumpets, captain?" she suggested, waving at me as I kept my eyes closed.
I just parted my lashes and caught a tray of food, kindly stepping over to him and setting it down in front of him seconds later.
Yumi just tipped her head to the side. "You need to eat more after your diagnosis."
Craig's eyes widened almost immediately. "What...?"
I stepped back over to Yumi, standing by her side again.
"Sebastian, here, noticed the skin around your nails was peeled and flaky, in a certain way, nonetheless," Yumi explained. "Which suggests that it was picked by your fingers or teeth out of habit. They're fresh, which states it's a recent habit. And they're deep, they probably hurt, which suggests that your anxiety levels have increased recently." She kept the smile. "I looked deeper into your file because, naturally, I would suspect you. I found out that just a month ago, you were diagnosed with a Type A Aortic Dissection in the ascending aorta."
His eyes started glistening with tears, breath shaking.
"I remember in all the medical book's I've read," she continued, lashes lowering, "states that an aortic dissection is when there's a tear in the inner layer of the aorta—the biggest artery that steams from your heart—so the blood will slip through the tear and get trapped between the inner layer and the outer layer, forming a pocket known as an aneurysm. Throughout time, the pocket will grow until it bursts, and you slowly bleed out."
He closed his eyes tightly as he lowered his head, breath shaking as tears bubbled under his eyes, and Officer Clington gazed over at him in horror.
"Not only that," Yumi said, "but you have a Type A dissection, in the ascending Aorta. Which means that the tear and the aneurysm is right next to your heart. So once it bursts, it will force your heart to stop, and death is in minutes." She kept her hands covering her mouth as he cried silently. "Your doctor gave you less than a year to live, and when it bursts is unknown. Surgery will not help because of your age, it will only make things worse." Her lashes lowered. "You know you will die, but you do not know when. So you are scared, naturally. That's why you're biting your nails, isn't it?"
He just breathed shakily, sobbing into the table as her lashes remained lowered.
"So he's dying?" Officer Clington said, scoffing. "And that's his motive for murder?"
"No," Yumi replied gracefully as I smiled and closed my eyes again, "as a matter of fact, it eliminates him as a suspect."
Clington just shrank back in his seat, sighing gently. "I'm glad to know it's not him."
My smile widened a bit.
"Now, I have found very confusing and conflicting evidence," Yumi stated, glancing at Craig to see him gaze up hazily. "And it was very odd, indeed, but my guess of the murderer was clear."
"Really?" Clington said, brows drawing together. "Who is it?"
Yumi gazed up at him. "The murderer," she smiled, "is Cameron Maddox."
The entire room silenced, and Craig raised his head now.
I parted my lashes, keeping the smile.
"Are you deranged?!" Clington said then, setting his hands on the table. "How can a dead man be the murderer? Okay, maybe he killed the first, but he's dead! He couldn't kill the others!"
She just glanced up, smiling. "That's because Cameron Maddox isn't dead."
Clington quieted then, brows drawing together. "But the coroner... she said it was him."
"Didn't you find it odd that Maddox's murder was the only one premeditated?" Yumi said, setting her cheek in her hand. "I found it quite odd, indeed. Especially knowing that the DNA, prints, and identification from the victim itself was burned off or broken, but not his face. And the killer premeditated this murder with expertise, had the intelligence of ridding of the identification, and then ended up leaving his ID?" She giggled. "Now either the killer's entirely stupid or extremally intelligent."
Craig and Clington stared now, clearly waiting for the full report.
"The body you found was not Cameron Maddox," Yumi told them. "Although it was his lookalike. Sometimes people look very similar, indeed, but their DNA and prints don't match. So the killer took the lookalike who clearly had been working in the building for some time, and then rid of the prints, dental records, and DNA so the coroner couldn't identify him further. Afterward, the killer purposely left the Identification Card in hopes that the police would determine that the victim was Cameron Maddox. And then after Cameron's alleged murder, he snuck about the building and killed the other ten people."
Craig stared now, brows drawing together. "How did he disrupt the DNA of his lookalike?"
"As I said," her lashes lowered, "his lookalike was a worker in the building. Probably a lesser one if no one expected this. All the other victims had broken strands in their DNA from radiation, and since the building had a past from radiation poisoning, it's safe to assume that their DNA was tainted from the building they worked. And, clearly, Maddox knew this, so he took this into consideration for planning his own murder."
"But... why?" Clington said.
"It's obvious," Yumi glanced at him, "with Maddox's position of being a reporter, all the other victims were higher-ups. Jealousy, maybe a power overtake, anger and vengeance. He premeditated his murder carefully so no one would suspect him. He did have a damaged past with all other victims—abuse reports, harassment—all which you didn't seem to find." She gazed up then, smiling. "For being in the police for as long as you did, you're very bad at doing your job, Officer Clington."
He just glared. "I'm human. I make mistakes." He then closed his eyes tightly. "I must've skipped past that, fuck. We would've figured this out sooner."
"Indeed," Yumi said, her uncovered eye glowing dangerously, "you would have."
"But... where do we find Cameron Maddox?" Capitan Craig said, rubbing his eyes in pure exhaustion before he gazed up. "He's nowhere. No house, no medical records, nothing."
Yumi just chuckled, covering her mouth a little.
I chuckled, too, keeping my eyes closed.
"What?" Craig said, brows drawing together. "What is so amusing about this?"
She just opened her mouth and laughed a little more before calming.
She then looked back at them, setting her cheek in her hand. "I found otherwise."
Craig's eyes widened, and his lips parted. "But, how?"
"Whoever you put in charge of finding more about Maddox sucked at looking deeply," she remarked as I parted my lashes, eyes glowing a dark red. "Which is curious containing the fact that all the other victims had clear reports, but Maddox did not."
"Are you saying there's a rat in the guard?" Craig said, standing now. "Do you understand what you are saying? I could be reprimanded for this nonsense!"
"You're oddly quiet," Yumi said then, glancing at Clington.
He had his face hidden, and his lips were sealed shut.
She then glanced up at Craig. "So, Capitan, who did you put in charge for finding more about the victims?"
"Well, I ordered Clington to...." His face grew pale, and his eyes widened in shock.
We all glanced over at him, and he kept his face hidden, though I saw the smile forming on his lips.
Oh, my. He was very good at hiding, indeed. I might've never suspected him without evidence.
"You?" Craig said then, voice raising as he slammed his hands on the table. "You're the rat?! You signed all those oaths and swore to protect England from all these monsters! And you're working with a murderer?!"
Yumi chuckled again, making me smile.
"What?!" Craig said then, glaring at her. "What's so funny now?!"
"How clueless can one be?" she said then, giggling as she parted her lashes, eyes glowing dangerously. "He's not working with him. He is the murderer."
The entire room silenced, and Craig just sank back in his chair. "But how is that possible? He looks nothing like the victim!"
"Oh, dying your hair, getting facial surgeries, and putting in contacts will take care of that. Let alone having someone in the governmental business that can create an alternate identity for you. As for everything else, care to explain Officer Clington?" Yumi said, smiling. "Or shall I say, Cameron Maddox?"
His smile just curled further, and he chuckled dangerously. "You're playing in dangerous waters, little girl. You should've just left it alone like I warned you."
"Warned me?" Yumi echoed in surprise.
"Oh, that'd be the letter I burned earlier this morning," I explained to her, smiling as she sent me a look. "It's not like it was going to stop you."
She just sighed and set her cheek in her hand again. "Care to explain how you did it? Or shall I?"
He just scoffed. "Everyone has second jobs, you know. I just joined the police force because I was bored, being a reporter all day. Everyone bossing me around, slapping papers on my desk. I'm part of a rich family!" He gazed up then, eyes darkened and cold. "My father's an author, my mother's a doctor! How could I be treated so cruelly?! I just joined that stupid job because I wanted to be an author like my dad! And they treated me like I was lesser than them!"
"They were your bosses," Yumi said in boredom. "That's what they do."
He just gritted his teeth. "You're one to talk! Treated all high and mighty all your fucking life! Never treated like a lesser like I was!"
My lashes lowered when I watched her expression darken, and the familiar anger grew in her eyes. "You're right, I wasn't."
He just scoffed and stood. "Exactly my poi—"
"I was treated worse," she finished.
He gazed down at her then. "What did you just say? Treated worse? How can you compare to me?"
She just smiled, though I saw the sharpness of anger in her eyes. "My parents were murdered, I was kidnapped and sold, tortured for almost two years, but I managed to escape." She just chuckled coldly. "But do I cry about it?" Her eyes darkned. "No, I grow from it. I feed off of it. And I train myself to use it as my strength."
He just scoffed. "Liar."
Her smile sharpened. "You, however, killed ten people who you claim treated you wrong. When in reality, they were doing their jobs. They bullied you? No. They just didn't like you but tried to hide it. Do you want to know why? Maybe it relates to all those harassment reports in your file."
He glared at her, teeth gritting.
"So let me guess..." she smiled up at him, "you became a police officer as a second job to get power over people? That makes sense. You are that disgusting. And it worked out for you in the end, didn't it, Officer Clington? "
He just growled. "I'm just about done with you! NO ONE TALKS TO ME THAT WAY!"
He pulled a gun, aiming directly at Yumi.
Master Yumi's smile widened as she remained calm. "I wouldn't do that if I were you."
I smiled then, eyes glowing a dangerous red.
"Oh, such smart talk from such a child!" he snapped, clicking off the safety.
"CLINGTON!" Craig said. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? SHE WORKS FOR THE KING!"
"Well, maybe the king can find an older guard dog!" Clington stated, aiming the gun directly at Yumi still. "Who not such a spoiled brat that can't even tie her own shoelaces!"
Yumi just smiled. "My, my, you're one to talk. You don't even know how to hold down a job without throwing a temper tantrum."
He gritted his teeth, finger hovering over the trigger.
"Master, do you honestly think it's wise to aggravate him further?" I said as she glanced up at me. "He has you at gun point, after all."
She just smiled. "You think I'm worried?" She gazed back at him. "I have you, Sebastian. I know you won't let me die."
My lashes lowered as she kept smiling.
"So can I kill him now?" I asked her.
"No," she answered, "be patient."
Craig just remained in place, shaking heavily.
"I'm surprised that he's not tackling Maddox right now and cuffing him," I said to Yumi. "That's surprising knowing what's he's been through as a captain."
"Before dinner, I slipped him a note," Yumi said to me, still gazing out as Clington aimed at her. "I told him that no matter what happens, he should not intervene. He runs the risk of dying if he does, and he still hasn't told his family."
My lashes lowered, and I gazed further out. "A kind heart you have, master."
Her lashes lowered. "Don't rub it in."
"What about now?" I said to her. "I can kill him in a second."
"I know you can," she answered, "patience, Sebastian."
"Why are you so calm?!" Clington yelled, glaring sharply. "You dare have a side conversation while I'm about to kill you? How disrespectful is that?!"
"Oh, I'm sorry," Yumi said, smiling still, "you want me to scream? Ahhhhhh...."
He just glared, the gun shaking in his hand. "I'll kill you!"
"You seem to want to so badly," she stated, "but you haven't shot me yet."
He just growled, finger hovering over the trigger.
"The gun is jammed," Yumi noted, smiling, "and you know it. I saw it jam when you cocked it."
He just breathed shakily, head lowering.
"Capitan Craig," Yumi stated, "you can go home now. Spend some time with your family. We'll take care of this."
"WHAT?" Clington said, aiming at Craig now. "You stay where you are! NO ONE'S leaving here alive!"
Yumi just sighed, rolling her eyes. "Sebastian escort him out, please."
"At once, my lord." I walked over to Craig then, who stood still, entire body shaking. "Right this way, captain."
Clington's glare sharpened. "I said no one's leaving!"
"He's not your target, clearly. So just let the man leave, yeah?" Yumi just gazed up at me as I guided Craig out from the room, helping him as quick as possible as Clington growled and shot toward Yumi.
I closed the doors behind Craig in a second.
The next I was in front of Clington, making him scramble to a stop.
He just gasped, looking at me, then to the door, then at me again. "How the hell...?"
"My master doesn't like it when lesser beings like you get close to her," I stated, eyes glowing a dark red. "And she doesn't like it when guns are pointed at her, either."
"Lesser?!" He growled and aimed the gun at me.
I just caught his wrist and flipped it to the side with a flick of mine, and he screamed when his arm twisted, and several snaps echoed through the room.
He screamed, falling to the ground as I watched him remorselessly.
"Sebastian, I'm about ready for bed," Yumi said. "Can you just kill him already? Make it quick."
Clington gazed up in horror, scrambling backward as tears burned down his cheeks. "What are you?"
"My, my..." I said, smiling as I stepped toward him, "is that even a question? I'm just..." my eyes flashed a dark red, pupils forming back into slits, "one hell of a butler."
He just cried out, watching me in horror as he kept scrambling backward. "Demon. DEMON!"
"Shhhh..." I cooed, setting my foot on his leg to prevent him from getting away further. "Careful what you yell out loud. People might hear you."
He screamed louder then. "DEMON! DEMON!"
I just chuckled darkly, sinking the heel of my foot further into his leg, slicing it into his skin.
He screamed, body spasming.
"You don't listen well, do you?" I tipped my head to the side. "Oh, it's fine. No one can hear you anyway."
"Sebastian," Yumi whined, "I said I'm tired. Hurry up."
I just caught Clington by the hair and shoved him up, making him scream as my fingers tore into his scalp. "But, master... can't I just have fun once and a while? It's always, 'quick this' and 'quick that'. Sometimes I just want to take my time."
She gazed up at me in boredom, rolling her eyes when she stood. "Whatever. I'll be in the study until you're ready."
"NO!" Clington screamed, making my eyes glow in anger. "DON'T LEAVE ME WITH THIS MONSTER!"
I just smiled. "I will forever be grateful, master. I like torturing annoying little weaklings."
"Whatever." She just strolled out from the room, closing the doors behind her.
I gazed down at Clington then. "Oh, my. Aren't you a sight for sore eyes?" I just smiled, gently wiping blood off his forehead. "Oh, so red. Have you ever tasted it? To a demon it's like strawberries."
"Please, let me go!" he sobbed.
"Aw, I appreciate you being polite and all with the 'please,' but... You see... when my master orders me to kill someone in the most horrible way... then I kill them in the most horrible way." I just chuckled. "Although, I am very angry after master's been hurt so many times by people like you.
"I've had enough."
I gazed down at him, eyes glowing a dangerous red. "And I need to take my anger out on something, and master told me to have my fun."
My smile widened, and his eyes grew in fear.
"Please, just let me go..." he sobbed.
"I'm not one for mercy, or couldn't you tell?" I just lifted him higher, hearing his cry of pain. But I just slid my tongue along his cheek, hearing him sob when I lightly licked the blood off him. "I am hungry, too... I haven't had a soul in a while, and... yours is so plain and ugly, but it'll have to do for now." I just stared into his eyes as he whimpered, breath shaking.
