- Minute of Embrace 拥抱这分钟, Eason Chan. Translated by Tianlu @ chinesepandamusic.wordpress.com.
Three hours had passed since Tian Yu had left, but Zhi Xun was still thinking about the goodbye kiss that he had given her. Although it had been brief, she was wondering what his intention of pursuing her had been, and how fate would play out if he was the destiny that she was looking for, in her seventh lifetime. Since appearing in her life, his image had been reappearing continuously in her mind, which just made her feel guiltier towards Herman. Although she had only been dating Herman for three months, she had known him for about two years. She had mutual classes with him since three years ago, but they had only been officially introduced in their second year of university. While she saw him as hope that he would be her Mr. Right and be able to, together with her, support her family financially, it was still too early for her to know whether they had been meant to be. On the other hand, Herman was an orphan and had no financial burden apart from his own. Like her, he was frugal, but he had an unrealistic dream of becoming an artist, a dream that would probably never come true until several years after.
She remembered what she had told Herman when she accepted him as her boyfriend, three months ago. She had said that she was waiting for the right one, and she didn't want to take the relationship into the next stage just yet. She didn't want to have sexual relations until she was ready. Like every youth, she had desires of her own, but she wanted to make sure they were right for each other before moving on to the next stage. Herman knew that he was her first boyfriend, and he had agreed to respect her for that. But what had happened that made him rush into having sexual relations?
For Herman, she had made a number of compromises. She had even posed in scanty clothing for the sake of being his model for his so-called art project, she had cancelled plans with her other friends for him because he was feeling down, and she nearly missed an examination because of him. Many times, she had felt like breaking down because of the stress she was going through. She had to take an extra part-time job when he needed money for his easel and art equipment, and she had saved up for a gift for him during Valentine's Day. She had done much for him in just three months, while he continued being popular among the girls in his major.
Herman was popular, and she was just a nobody that hid behind books in the library. But she hadn't seen the signs that they had been unsuitable for each other, until now. However, she had felt that she was the bad person in the relationship as she was the one who had someone else in her memory, while Herman hadn't cheated on her. So from her point of view, she shouldn't be the one to let go of the relationship. She was willing to give him another chance, but at the same time, she wasn't sure of her own feelings for Tian Yu.
A nurse knocked on her room door, interrupting her thoughts. "Miss Huo, you have a package. Could you please sign for it?"
Thinking that the package contained her missing items from the fire, Zhi Xun quickly scrawled her signature on the form given to her without reading, and handed the signed form to the nurse. Upon opening the package, an unsigned note written in a neat handwriting fell out into her lap. It read:
"Dear Miss Huo,
I apologise that I accidentally damaged your cellphone and your laptop while rescuing you from the fire. Here is a replacement phone with my sincerest wishes. If you have backed up your phone contacts to Gmail or some other online service, you should be able to retrieve them by signing in to your account.
Your laptop is currently being repaired, and you should receive it by tomorrow.
P.S. Should you need anything, I've saved my number into the phone as 'Saviour'."
Zhi Xun was not bothered by the loss of her phone contacts as she had only a few contacts, and she knew her aunt, uncle and her roommates' contact numbers by heart. What she was concerned about, had been her laptop as she was used to updating her blog every day, and comments from her followers had meant a lot to her.
Perhaps she could blog with the phone, she thought. She opened the box, and was astonished to realise it was the latest Samsung Edge phone. It must have cost 'Saviour' a lot of money. She had been using her old mobile phone for about three years now. She had received it as a gift from one of her housemates when the rich girl got a new mobile phone. The phone had been used for two years by its former owner when she had received it.
Should she return it? She considered, in her mind.
The phone suddenly rang. She quickly answered it, in fear that the loud ringing might disrupt a patient in the next room.
"Hello."
"Zhi Xun, it's me." She knew who it was, the minute he spoke. It was Saviour.
"Yes, Mr. Saviour."
"I'm just calling because I've been told that you have received the package."
"Yes, I have. But my original phone wasn't that expensive, it was a gift. I can't take this, it's too expensive."
"Just take it as compensation."
"I can't. It's too costly. I'll have to return it to you."
"You have to accept it. You already agreed to, didn't you?"
"When did I-" she begun, and then she remembered the form she had signed. Sneaky fellow!
"Fine, I'll accept the cellphone. Is that all that I signed for?"
"My boyfriend services."
"What..you.." she started to panic and stammer.
"No, that wasn't real. I was just making fun of you," he said. He didn't even laugh, he said everything in the same, cold, nonchalant voice.
"You!" she wanted to shout, but then she was in the hospital. "Fine. I'll be the bigger person and let you off for now."
"I already told you to be careful." He was right. She had been careless. He could have used the form to his advantage, and get her in a bigger mess, but he hadn't, fortunately.
"Perhaps you should take a rest now," he added.
"Okay." She lay down in the hospital bed.
"You will be mine someday." The phone call disconnected.
Huo Zhi Xun had never ever felt even more confused in her life by a man. Would he ever stop his monkey business and messing with her? And yet, he had felt so endearing to her, that she felt like jumping him and forgetting she was someone's girlfriend. Everything had been so fascinating, his gorgeous eyes, the coldness of his voice, his muscular figure, how his hands felt on her, even how he tempted her with his cold smile.
And the kiss. It had just burnt her lips. She was hoping he would come back for more.
She was going to dream of him one night soon, not the winged man in black, but him, the Sexy Saviour, the man who would be her undoing. It had just taken one meeting with the Saviour for her to go wild over him in her thoughts. And she was going against her own principles; which she had set for herself: to not be unfaithful, to not think of someone other than Herman, to not desire someone else in her bed.
She jolted herself up in the hospital bed at the thought of the third and last principle. Desire someone else in her bed. She was guilty of desirous thoughts of the Saviour in her bed. Did it mean she wanted him, but had never wanted to accept Herman? She had even imagined him in nothing but a pair of boxers, as she rubbed her hands against his muscular chest... She had even woken up drooling from a nap.
Huo Zhi Xun, what are you doing? She tried to shake herself. Wake up, you're still with Herman. He didn't break up with you yet. She hit herself lightly on her temple. With all these wild thoughts, she feared she was becoming that woman she had vowed to herself that she would never be. No, she shouldn't cheat. Should she clear things up with Herman?
