- After Tonight, G.E.M. Tang
Translated by Tianlu @ chinesepandamusic.wordpress.com.
As expected, the log cabin had been designed for shared use by his parents. There was only one bed, being a queen-sized bed, and a bathroom. It was their luck that it had started to rain outside after they were done warming themselves in the cabin.
Fortunately, his parents had a pair of unused bathrobes, which were still in the packaging they were bought in. He turned in the other direction to change. Zhi Xun slipped out of her soiled clothes and put on her bathrobe. She could have stolen a peek at Tian Yu's naked bottom, but as he had been a gentleman with her, she decided to do the same with him. Then they took turns to use the bathroom and wash the sand and mud out of their skin.
It didn't look like the rain was ready to stop anytime soon. Zhi Xun was delighted at the chance to stay with Tian Yu for the night, as the whole incident had been embarrassing to her and she didn't want to face her housemates or even Runyu. But she was shy to tell Tian Yu that she wanted to stay with him for the night. She prayed that the rain would continue instead.
"I can sit on the couch if you want to take a nap on the bed," Tian Yu offered.
"If the rain is going to go on, perhaps we could just rest here," Zhi Xun suggested. "I'm just tired." She faked a yawn. She would just pretend to fall asleep later, and sneak a few peeks at her sleeping saviour.
"That's okay, the couch is comfortable enough for me."
"The bed is big enough for us even if we put some distance between us," Zhi Xun said. "You wanted me to trust you, didn't you. Prove it then. Prove that you won't do anything I don't want."
What if that was what she wanted? she thought after the words left her mouth.
"It'll be okay." Tian Yu said. "I used to sleep on the floor as a child, this couch is really soft and comfortable."
"Could you just lay next to me and watch me as I sleep? It's dark, and I'm a little scared," she lied. She had just wanted him to lie next to her so she could peek at him after he was asleep.
Seeing him hesitate, she went over and grabbed his arm. He casually looked down while she was dragging him to the bed, and realised her bathrobe was loosely fastened and she had left some of her cleavage exposed, so again pretended to be looking in the other direction. Did she normally dress so provocatively around a man? he thought as he felt jealousy brewing inside his heart. He wouldn't want her that way around another man.
She gazed into his gorgeous eyes, and snuggled an inch closer to him.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"Could you sing me a song or tell me a story to make me sleep? Now I can't sleep." She playfully poked him in the ribs.
He sighed. "I'm not good at either of this."
"Just hold me, then." She fluttered her eyelids at him. "I promise not to move around while we're both in bed."
He was astonished by her sudden change in behaviour. Was she flirting with him, or trying to seduce him? Whatever she was doing, it was sensual, and she was provoking him to desire her.
"What game are you playing?" he asked. "I've told you, it's not going to happen tonight. I want you, not an one-night stand."
She gave up on teasing him. "Let's just go to sleep. No more jokes."
............................................................................................................................
Even after he had drifted off to sleep, she was still awake, watching him. Everything about him had been so perfect, that she wanted to touch him for herself to see if he was really there. She pawed around in the darkness of the room to find the switch of the bedside lamp, and flicked it on.
He was so handsome even when fast asleep. She wanted to lie there watching and admiring him while he slept. But his lips had been so irresistible, even for a man. At her age, her male peers had mostly dry and chapped lips. His lips had looked moist. She couldn't bear not to taste them for herself while he was asleep. So she climbed on top of him and decided to taste his lips.
What she didn't know was that he had very keen senses, and was trained to react to an attack even when asleep. The minute she laid her lips on his, his eyes flew open. She had fallen backwards in shock, almost falling off the bed, until he had pulled on the bow of her bathrobe, which was hanging out, to prevent her fall and at the same time, pull her inwards. As she had fastened it loosely, one powerful tug from him had caused the bow to come undone and the bathrobe had promptly flew open. As he was strong, he had forgotten to use a bit less strength on everything, and this included the bathrobe she was wearing which he had just tore.
Although the bedside lamp was still a little dim, she was sure he had seen all he could have seen of her, as she could have sworn he was now gawking at her senselessly. It would have been a good time for both of them to go to sleep now, facing their respective directions. But with her only clothes ruined, she had been so annoyed with him that she pulled open his bathrobe as well.
"You've seen everything," she shouted at him. "At least it's fair for me to have my share of sightseeing as well!"
She had been so angry, that she picked up a pillow and started hitting him with it. "I'm sorry. I've been trained to react to sudden attacks," he explained.
She wailed. "You're messing up my head. I don't know why! I've been confused since the first time I've met you. I had a boyfriend, then everything just went downhill after that. I lost my stuff, my stuff in the shared apartment was slightly damaged by the fire, I almost got ruined by my ex when trying to break up with him because of you, and now you tore the only clothes I have to wear while we're stranded out here!"
She was frustrated and furious, but when he had heard the truth that she had wanted to break up with the jerk because of him, it had pleased him.
He climbed over to her side, and held her in his arms.
"Break up because of me?"
She realised she had blurted out whatever was on her mind without a further thought. She nodded.
"But why?" he asked. "In the first place, you pushed me away because you had a boyfriend."
"I don't know!" she yelled. "You're confusing me!"
"What do you have for me?" he asked.
"I don't want to tell you," she said. "You made my world topsy-turvy since you entered my life. Why me? Why not someone else?"
"You're confusing me too, when you wanted to make love to me but not be in a relationship with me. You were in a relationship with an idiot but you didn't want to make love. Is it always one or the other?" he asked.
She calmed down and reflected on his words.
"I'm jealous of all the men who can have you, but not me. I don't want them seeing your cleavage, not how you looked like when your wet dress was clinging to your body, not your bare body, nothing of you." He looked cold when he had said those words, like he was angry inside. "I just can't take it. I need to have you. I can't let another get hold of you."
She was dumbfounded by his words. How could he be gifted with such a glib tongue, yet be so cold and expressionless? How could such a cold person have such jealousy in him?
"Fine, I admit it. I've been keeping my emotions to myself all this time. So, I like you. Then what?" she blurted out.
"Why can't I have a chance with you?" he asked her back. "Am I really that bad? I can prove myself to you that I'm capable of making you happy."
"You don't know me." She sighed. "Do you know why I was with my ex?"
"No."
"I have family commitments," she admitted. "They want me to marry into a rich family. My mother is sick in hospital. My father passed away some time ago, and my mother is in hospital. What if in future, I was to marry some old man I didn't like, for the sake of my family? My plan was to have my first time with someone I liked, before I had to submit to my fate. Do you know why I have such a crappy phone and laptop? Because unlike people like you, I can't afford anything. I've only been able to eat at the canteen. If I didn't get the scholarship, probably I'd never enter university."
He felt her pain. But he was willing to work hard for her to have a better life. She hadn't known his family background, probably because he had always dressed casually, and didn't have many friends. He was a person with a humble personality, and hadn't wanted to depend on himself. She didn't know he was already a business owner, and an entrepreneur, both of which he achieved on his own. He wouldn't let her suffer.
"Am I correct to say you didn't love him?" he asked, breaking the silence between them. "You were doing everything for your family. And now, I want to do everything for you. Perhaps I could be of help to you. I am willing."
