I sat on my bed, staring into the mirrors of closet doors. I slowly climbed down the ladder of the triple bunk bed, making sure to avoid the one squeaky step. I was having one of my stupid visions again, and yes, I mean visions. So I closed my eyes and let the feeling of numbness wash over me.
Same as usual I assume… I thought to myself, I was already used to the feeling, that familiarity of the situation putting me at ease making this a little less weird.
The vision began, as usual, what should have been my room around me had turned into an eerie forest, as I turned to the left I saw a familiar clearing, one that held a seven-foot-tall stone statue. The statue did not seem old, it was quite pristine. As I scanned the statue something caught my eye. The figure in the statue looked creepily similar to me. In locks of curly hair on its head was holding what looked to be a bird of sorts. The breed of the bird had escaped my lips but it looked so familiar and yet I could only gape in astonishment. As I looked even closer, I could see that the statue and the stone bird were both smiling. I tilted my head to the side in confusion. Birds can’t smile? Why is there a statue of me in a forest for God’s sake?
“This is your destiny.” A mysterious voice spoke in my mind.
I opened my eyes and the vision disappeared.
When I told my mother about my visions she forbade me to talk about them, saying I wasn’t ready for what is to come. So I had to stay silent. I walked through the door and went to the shower. Its nice hot tangy drops rushed all over me. After I was done taking my shower and getting dressed I went downstairs. The savory smell of waffles wafting through the air. I went through the foyer and into the kitchen. As usual, the cold rock and rugged floor made my feet go cold.
“Dad, are you cooking waffles?!” I asked.
“Yep.” My dad answered, his shiny yellowish teeth grinning.
I smiled back, even though his teeth looked a little repulsive. I sat down on the bench at the table. Thoughts skimmed through my mind of ideas of what to draw and paint.
One thought came through my mind that made me itch in excitement to draw, what about drawing a phoenix?!
I grinned ear to ear.
“Here’s some waffles.” My dad served them hot on the plate.
Mmmm, I thought, fresh waffles always taste best!
I grabbed one from the plate and drowned it in the buttery goodness of syrup. Then I added the pearly white whip cream on top, lots of it.
“Whoa… don’t give yourself too much sugar, save some room for your birthday cake!” My dad warned.
Oh no, I almost completely forgot my birthday!
Stupid visions, I thought.
“It is your destiny…” The mysterious voice in my mind said.
I grimaced.
“Are you okay?!” My dad asked.
I froze, “Yeah, I am fine...”
My dad gave me a concerned look, “Is it the voice and visions?!”
“Yeah…” I admitted.
My dad gave me a sad look. “It is time you knew…”
“Knew what?!” I asked.
“... You were…” My dad paused then continued. “You are, I mean…” He paused again. “You are one of them…”
“Last of what?!” I asked, curiosity killed the cat, eh?
My dad took a melancholy deep breath. “You are one of the Olympus Messengers.”
“What?” I asked, confused as heck as any weird normal kid would be.
My dad frowned, pain glazed his eyes.
My mom came in happily and kissed me on the cheek.
“Happy birthday sweetie.”
My dad straightened up and put on a fake smile to cover up his frown.
“I’ll explain later.” My dad mouthed when my mom wasn’t looking.
I grabbed my fork, questions being poured into my mind.
A smile formed in my syrup.
My eyes widened with terror. I opened my mouth but then I realized it was another vision. I frowned, I wanted to tell my mom or dad but I couldn’t, my mom forbade me to.
The syrup mouthed something but I couldn’t understand the strange words. It was like it was speaking to me in another language.
I frowned.
Why are these visions so confusing?… I thought.
Then I shoved these thoughts away in a deep corner of my mind.
I dug into my waffle with a fork and shoved all the gooey goodness into my mouth. Today was my birthday and I should not think of these things. When I finished my meal, I went into the bathroom and brushed my teeth. As usual, my sister shoved me in the way.
“Em’!” I yelled, careful not to say her full name because she hated being called by her full middle name.
“Sorry, but I need to brush my teeth!” Em yelled anxiously.
I gave her a dark stare.
She exchanged a dark stare back.
I sighed, you have to set a good example… a memory of my mom telling me to be a better sibling reminded me.
I sighed quietly and went to the other sink to finish brushing my teeth.
After I was done, I went downstairs and went into the living room.
My mom gave me a concerned look, “We have to talk.”
I froze, “What is it?”
My mom brightened up, “We need to talk about getting ready for your birthday party!”
I relaxed a bit but I had a nagging feeling she was taken aback like she was hiding something.
I smiled at her, “How shall we prepare?!”
She smiled at me, “Just get into your nymph clothes.”
I smiled at her and left to go upstairs.
I jumped into my nymph clothes, a blue flower wreath, a greek green dress, blue flower wreath bracelets, and anklets. I took off my shoes, obviously not gonna need them for this type of thing.
“You cannot ignore me much longer…” The mysterious voice popped into my head.
I rolled my eyes, why would I care?!
“You should care.” The voice encountered.
I held my breath and just breathed out.
I shall not get angry with a voice that doesn’t matter.
I walked out of my room and walked downstairs again. These visions and that voice weren’t gonna bother me one bit. Right now, I have to focus on my birthday, that’s what matters. But I had another nagging feeling that it wasn’t the only thing that mattered. Something else mattered but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
“K, come to help me up!” My mom called me downstairs.
I ran downstairs and walked outside into the backyard.
“Mom said she needs help, where is she?” I asked my dad.
“Over there!” My dad pointed toward my mom who was setting up the table scenery.
“Mom, what do you need help with?” I walked over to my mom.
“With this.” My mom held up a bag of flowers and gave it to me. “Can you please set up the flowers on the table?”
“Yeah,” I responded and took them. I began to set up the flowers on the table. They were pink, blue, purple, yellow, and orange. After I finished setting them up I asked, “Mom? Do you have anything else you need to help me?”
“Yeah, open the gate and dad will help you set it up as an entrance.”
“Okay.”
I walked over to the gate and opened it. My dad walked over the supplies and we set up the entrance in a magical forest style.
