Jay was trying his best to avoid eye contact with Rose. "I'm sorry," he replied after a while. "I cannot fulfill your wish for me to be your partner at the school trip tomorrow."
As usual, it took a few seconds for the words to be understood by Rose, because every time Jay said, 'I'm sorry,' Rose always panicked a little and her world would stop for a moment. And as usual, the silence made Jay want to kill himself because he didn't know what Rose was thinking, or even feeling because she always had her poker face on when silences happened.
"Wait, what?" were the first words that came out of Rose's mouth after a few moment. The short question that followed a little after was, "Why?"
Jay finally dared to look at Rose and she looked more angry than sad. He, then, spoke, "You see, I'm a bit sick." As if to show his point, he coughed a little. "I have fever," he said while pointing to his sweater. "In fact, right now I'm not supposed to be here. I'm supposed to be at home, sleeping with tons of blankets. I sneaked out to tell you the news."
"How did you even get a fever?" Rose asked with an irritated tone as if Jay getting a fever was actually his fault. Rose was very moody these days, though, so that tone wasn't exactly a good sign.
"I, um," Jay rubbed the back of his head and smiled sheepishly at Rose. He knew tor sure that Rose was going to be angry at him, and his prediction was very correct. Rose looked the other way, avoiding eye contact with Jay, and crossed her arms like a little girl.
You see, six year old Rose was the bossy type when it came to Jay. She was very kind to her friends and she was an angel to her parents, but she wanted to be spoiled by Jay. Not spoiled with money, but with care and attention. She felt as if Jay should only pay attention to her. Yeah, she was a little bit too protective.
Jay, however, didn't really mind. He liked the way Rose would glare at those who had crushes on him. Yeah, he was a loner, but he had always wore hoodies and kept his head down. Ever since he started hanging out with Rose, he stopped all those shy stuff and nearly every week someone told him a gossip about blablabla liking him. Of course, he only had his eye for one girl, even if he was only six.
Mhm, they had always been so close.
"I'm sorry, Rose, I'm sorry," Jay repeated over and over again until Rose finally decided to turn around. She was glaring at him, but he knew her too well to not notice the small bit of sadness behind that anger.
Rose had been really looking forward to this trip because she really wanted to meet the zebras. She had never seen zebras, but Jay claimed that he did. She wanted to meet the zebras with Jay, because everything seemed much for fun with him. But now that she found out he couldn't come with her, she was sad before it even started.
"I... I was really looking forward to it, you know?" she whispered quietly. She was sad, definitely. There was no changing that, but what could Jay do about it? His mother wouldn't let him go and she already sent the decline letter thing to his school.
"I know, Rose, I'm sorry." Jay sighed. He had been saying those two same words like what, thirteen times now.
"Ugh, I'm not looking forward to it anymore. I cannot believe this. Jay, how did you get the fever?" Rose asked again. She wanted to know how he got it, wanted to know if the reason made sense or not.
"I was helping this poor kid, around four. He was lost. It started raining. You know the rest," Jay said truthfully and Rose just sighed in response. She couldn't blame him for helping a person, especially a kid. Well, what could they do about it now?
"I really was looking forward to it, though," Rose said sadly. All the anger was already wiped out of her eyes, replaced with the sadness. Jay hugged him and laid her head on his chest.
Rose had never gone to a zoo with her friends and she wanted Jay to be there, too, so they would be complete, but no. He just had to get sick. Now Rose bet she wouldn't even smile willingly tomorrow. She would be all sad and angry and everything negative. She would only be thinking about Jay. She couldn't even imagine a day without Jay, but now this.
"Don't be sad, you can tell me all the details tomorrow evening. I'll sneak out and we can meet in here," Jay tried to cheer her up. He didn't like seeing her like this, of course. Rose just nodded in response. What else could she say? That she really hated everyone right now because of this?
She hated her father for signing that 'I agree' letter thing so that she could legally join the trip. She hated the lost four year old boy to show up when Jay was there. She hated Jay's mother for not letting Jay join the trip. She hated herself for hating almost everyone.
"I'm fine. It's just a little fever. I get that all the time. Now, you better take me a picture of a giraffe. Oh yeah, and promise me to be happy while you're there, kay?" Jay grinned. Rose replied with an 'of course'.641Please respect copyright.PENANAJA6ZeEeVAI
Unlike Rose, Jay was more interested in giraffes than zebras. "They're tall," he said.
So, Rose finally went home and so did Jay. As predicted, Rose's day went really bad and she really wanted to cry every time her friends got really happy. They were all having fun with their best friends while Rose was alone.
She didn't forget to take a picture of the giraffes, though.
When it was time to meet the zebras, Rose excused herself to go to the toilet and cried a little. She could hear her friends laughing from inside still, and the washroom was actually pretty far away from the area they were in. 'They must be really happy,' Rose thought, 'Unlike me.'
When they finally reached the school where their parents or whoever was going to pick them up, Rose ran away from her chauffeur. She managed to hide herself behind the crowd and cars.
She ran to the garden they had decided to meet and when she saw Jay who.was smiling brightly, she ran straight onto him and hugged him as tight as she could.
"Jay, I'm so, so sorry," Rose said instantly.
Jay's smiled turned into a frown when he noticed Rose wasn't as happy as him. He raised an eyebrow as if to ask, 'Why?'
"I broke my promise."
