Nu watched as Jayden stood with a knife in his hand, chopping up vegetables. "Jayden! What are you doing here?"
"It's not important," Jayden dodged the question, continuing his chopping. "Are you okay?"
Nu wrung her hands. "Yeah, I'm okay..."
Jayden looked over his shoulder at the villains, who were talking to the newcomer. Only Gideon was watching the pair out of the corner of his golden eyes, his arms crossed defensively.
Nu sidled up to Jayden, and he leaned in closer. "We've got to break our way out of here," he said as he handed her the other knife and motioned for her to help.
Nu thought for a second, looking at the chopped vegetables, but instead went to the fridge and grabbed the meat that was there, moving back over to the counter to cut it expertly into strips. "We can't," she told Jayden, "Magpie is on her way."
Jayden face went ashen. "No, they can't come here."
"They are," Nu answered. "I tried to tell them no, but Magpie said we have a new ally who can help us."
"A new ally...?" Jayden looked more closely at the newest supposed evildoer, the necromancer. "You don't think..."
"Maybe," Nu shrugged, finishing with the meat. She plunked it in a pan and Jayden showed her how to light the burner. Caecius turned to look as the flames licked the edges of the pan as if he sensed the sudden change in the air, but returned to asking the necromancer questions. Nu could see the air user getting agitated as though he wasn't getting a straight answer, which made sense if the man dressed in grey really was on the side of good.
"Caecius won't kill me, you know," Nu told Jayden as she let the meat cook. "He thinks he can't go back home if I'm dead."
"Let's hope that stays true," Jayden said. "The newcomer claims to be a necromancer, according to Cordis."
"He can send us back home?" Nu asked excitedly.
Jayden just shrugged and dumped the cut veggies into the meat, letting Nu stir as he did so.
"Jay?" Nu put a hand on his shoulder. "We'll be okay. Magpie and Senshi and Van are on their way to rescue us. I believe in their plan."
Jayden seemed unsure, and Nu continued cooking in silence, confident that their friends would come and save them.
After all, Magpie had told her so.
