I knew that Betty wasn’t gonna be at school again today. She wasn’t there yesterday, either. Can’t blame her.
I was so pissed at James. He had no idea what she had been through or how much he meant to her. How could he? I truly believed that he was the worst person in the school. Especially since Ms. Treace got arrested.
He was so terrible. She gave him the fucking world and he went and fucked it up.
I wondered if Cam knew. Cam was my boyfriend, and he was also really good friends with James. I would break up with Cam if he was keeping this a secret.
I got my phone out of my pocket and FaceTimed him. He picked up almost immediately.
His cute face smiled at me from the screen. “What’s up, cutie? It’s Friday night, you wanna hang out?” he asked.
I smiled back at him, his piercing blue eyes glittering through my phone. “No, I’m gonna go to Betty’s house soon to check on her. I should have gone sooner, but I know she wants her space. I just don’t want her to hurt herself again, you know?” I said.
Cam nodded. “That’s a good idea. Make sure to tell her that I’m thinking of her. I messaged her on Instagram yesterday to ask if she was alright, but she didn’t answer,” he told me.
“Did you know? Because I swear if you did, you’re out, too,” I snapped.
His beautiful blue eyes widened. “Whoa, who do you think I am? Of course I didn’t know! Look, I don’t care how good of friends I am with James, what he did isn’t right. Like, you can’t do that. It’s so wrong. I’m really mad at him for it, actually, I haven't talked to him since he left on Wednesday,” my boyfriend told me.
I let out a deep breath that I hadn’t realized that I’d been holding in. I was so relieved.
Cam shook his head. “Literally, who do you think I am? I’m not a fucking monster,” he said.
It’s true. Cam was one of the nicest and most genuine people that I knew. Despite being popular and a jock, he was super sweet and really romantic. I was so lucky to have him.
“I know. Like why would he do that? It’s awful,” I told Cam. He nodded.
We talked more while I packed some clothes and food to take with me to Betty’s because she might need more and, knowing us, I could very well spend the night there.
I hung up on Cam when I got in my car. I drove 10 minutes until I got to her driveway.
I was so confused. There were two cars in the driveway, and only one was hers. I full-on jumped out of my car and sprinted to her front door, worried that someone was trying to kill her.
I opened the door without knocking, looking around the dining room and kitchen looking for her.
“Betty!” I yelled. No answer.
I dropped my stuff and ran to the living room. I came to a full stop.
There she was, with some guy.
He wasn’t trying to kill her. They were cuddling on her couch, her head lying gently on his bare chest.
“Um, hello?” I said aloud. Both of them snapped their heads up to look at me, Betty’s eyes wide with horror.
“Is this like your sister or something?” the boy whispered to Betty.
“No, that’s my best friend, Este. She’s basically my sister, though,” she told him, her cheeks turning red.
At that point, Betty was sitting straight up. The boy stood up and walked over to me. He had a natural tan, with brown hair and dark eyes. He was tall and had a toned, muscular build.
He stopped around 6 feet from me, and he smiled. “Hi, I’m Josh,” he said.
“Este,” I replied.
Betty came up behind him, slipping her hand into his.
“Alright, this doesn’t need to turn into a meet and greet. Me and Este have to talk; I’ll see you tomorrow?” she said to Josh.
He nodded and turned to smile at her. He had a really cute smile, and his face lit up whenever he snuck a glance at her.
“Okay, call me whenever then. Love you, babe,” Josh told her. He kissed her on the cheek, smiled at me, grabbed his shirt from the couch, and walked in the direction of the door.
Betty looked at the floor.
I didn’t say anything until I heard the door close.
“So, who's Josh?” I asked in a smart-ass tone.
“Um, he’s just a friend,” she mumbled.
I chuckled. “What kind of friend?” I asked. “Because I haven’t given you a hickey before.”
A small smile crept onto her pink lips as she went to cover it with her hand. I grabbed her wrist mid-motion.
“Betty Rose Evanson, don’t you hide it from me. Don’t lie to me either, I want to know who he is,” I said to her, like I was her mother.
She started blushing. “Well, I met him at a college party I went to Wednesday night, and, I don’t know, I’ve been with him since,” she said.
I frowned. “So he’s your rebound?” I asked.
“He is not my rebound! This is real; I love him” Betty snapped.
“Hey, that’s alright. I’m just trying to understand,” I said.
“Fine, ask questions then. I’ll prove this is real,” she said.
I sighed. “Okay, then. What’s his favorite color? What’s his major? Where’s he from? What’s his mom’s name? What’s his favorite thing to do? Does he play sports? Is he good in bed?” I asked. I prayed that she wouldn’t pick up on the last question.
“His favorite color is blue, his major is engineering, he’s from San Diego, his mom’s name is Andrea, his favorite thing to do is cook, he plays soccer, and yes, he’s really good,” she replied.
I started smiling as she realized what she said.
“I knew it!” I said.
“Fuck! No, you weren’t supposed to know,” she said, panicking.
“Oh, girlie, I’ve known since he said he was just a friend. If you had just said that he was a friend, then I wouldn’t have come to that conclusion so soon. But when you said that you were ‘just friends’, I knew stuff had already happened,” I told her.
Betty sighed. “Shit,” she mumbled. She started blushing as her eyes fixated on my shoes.
“Hey,” I said, lifting her chin up to look at me. “It’s okay. I’m not here to judge you, I’m here to be a friend and a crying shoulder if you need it. I’m all for it if you are, I just don’t want you to get hurt again,” I said.
“I know,” she said. “I won’t. Being with Josh is so much easier, there’s no pressure, and he’s a better guy.”
“Okay then, if that’s what you want then I’m here for it. I’ll always support you no matter what you do,” I told her.
“Thanks. Love you, girl,” Betty said.
“Love you, too,” I said.
We gave each other a good hug.
“Now, go put pajamas on, we’re gonna have a girls night,” I said.

Me and Betty were on her couch watching Mean Girls, each with a tub of ice cream and a plastic spoon in our lap and pajamas on. I had strawberry shortcake flavored, and she had chocolate peanut butter.
“My sister’s getting married tomorrow,” she said, out of nowhere.
“You talked to Rebekah recently?” I asked in shock.
She nodded. “Yeah, apparently she moved back like a week ago. She lives right by Augustine, which is how she found out I’m alive. She messaged me on Instagram, we talked for a whole minute, I told her I’d talk to her in another ten years and hung up. I stalked her pictures, she looks exactly how I remembered her. She looks happy,” Betty told me.
I was the only person who knew about her sister. “That’s crazy,” she said.
At that moment, we heard a knock at the door. Then we heard it open.
“Josh, is that you?” Betty yelled.
We heard footsteps getting closer.
“E, go to my room and get the pistol from the drawer of my nightstand,” Betty whispered.
Before I could move, a young woman was standing in the door frame. She looked like Betty.
Oh shit. I’m pretty sure it’s Rebekah.
“Still living in this old dump?” the young woman said.
“Rebekah, get the fuck out of my house right now,” Betty snapped.
“I want you to come to my wedding tomorrow,” Rebekah said.
Betty started laughing. “I don’t care, get the fuck out right now or I’m calling the cops,” she said.
The woman, Rebekah, sighed and turned out toward the door. We heard the door open.
“The ceremony starts at 4. I live right next to Augustine in the white house with the black door,” she called out.
“Fuck you, Rebekah!” Betty yelled back at her.
The door closed.
“Bitch,” Betty said quietly.
Well, that happened.
