(Seth’s PoV)
Each of the team inside the rink were doing their best to win. The DevilSaint, red and white uniform with a logo of a black wings with an angel halo, was two points ahead than the Razorshark, the team I was here supporting. They had a black uniform with a white shark logo that had its pointy teeth out.
The Razorshark’s defensemen tried their best to slam the one DevilSaint who kept the puck skillfully on her stick. Number 24 was written in big black font in the back of her uniform while her last name ‘Avery’, much smaller than the 24, was written in bold letters above the number. The wingmen soon caught up to her but her defensemen blocked them out of her way.
My cousin, who was the goalkeeper of the RazorShark went into defense mode when the DevilSaint was just a couple of inches away. As she was angling to goal, one of the Razorshark crept behind her and tried to take the puck.
She took the puck and spun 360. The Razorshark followed her but she didn’t had the puck. As they finished the spin, the puck was found in the same place but the DevilSaint had already shot it towards the net. The buzzer went off, signaling the end of the game.
The fans of the DevilSaint jumped to their feet and screamed in glee while the Razorshark clapped for their enemy’s success. The rest of the DevilSaint member ran towards the one who made the goal and they hugged her and sometimes hit her playfully.
They shook hands with the Razorshark and went back to their celebration. The one who made the last goal removed her helmet and her long golden brown braided hair fell to her back and my breath got caught in my lungs. She was absolutely beautiful. I was stuck staring at her spellbinding deep blue pools. She was smiling as wide as the Atlantic, revealing two rows of perfectly white teeth and a cute dimple on her right cheek.
She and her teammates went to the locker room to change. I waited for my cousin and congratulated her for trying her best.
“Yeah,” she said, disappointment for herself was obvious in her voice. “But it wasn’t enough for DevilSaint’s captain.”
“The girl who scored that goal was the captain?” I asked, curious about her.
“Isn’t it obvious? The team looks up to her. Well, I look up at her. She’s an amazing player!”
She smiled. Admiration for the DevilSaint’s captain obvious in her bright green eyes. Sarah was a second year in her high school and hockey has been her life ever since she was five. But she rarely admire other hockey players so I was shocked when she admitted that she looked up to this ‘captain’. It’s not even her team captain.
“So, Seth, I saw the way you look at her,” she sang.
I faked an innocent look. “I wasn’t looking at her.”
“Yeah, you’re not,” she agreed sarcastically.
I laughed at her and my hand flew to ruffle her blond hair. She leaned back to avoid my hand and then her team mates invited her for a dinner. She asked me if she could and I agreed. Promising me that one of her friends would drive her home.
I stood up to go home when the girl’s face flashed again in my mind. With a smirk, I decided to introduce myself to her and waited outside their locker room.
I know, creepy.
The door opened and girls came out one by one. They were laughing and joking so they didn’t noticed me. The last girl poked her head inside,
“Remember! Same place.”
The girl inside gave a laugh that sent shivers down my spine. The good kind of shiver. “I know, Liz. I’ll be there.”
With one last wave, the girl called Liz ran towards her other team mates. Their captain, who I haven’t seen, was probably the one left inside. The door was slightly ajar and I was in the point of opening it more when I hear a voice talked inside.
“Hey,” she greeted. But I heard no voice answered her so I guessed she was talking to the phone. “We won today’s game!”
She said in a voice that kind of wanted to be praise. I raised a brow and decided, against my better judgement, to take a peek inside. Her back was turned to me and she was holding a phone in her left ear.
“Please,” her voice lost all the joyousness she showed earlier with her friends and agony replaced it. “I miss you.”
The scene was a bit too personal for my invading self so, I decided to leave. But as I was walking away, she came out of the locker room. I turned to look at her. She was wearing a white t-shirt with DevilSaint’s logo on it and a black skinny jeans below a brown long coat that reached her knees. Her feet was covered in a black knee-length boots.
“Hi,” I greeted without thinking.
Her eyes grew with shocked. She looked around as if to make sure I was talking to her. Then she pointed to herself and raised a brow.
“Yes,” I said with a laugh. “I’m talking to you.”
She gave me a laugh. “Sorry, I just wasn’t expecting it.”
“I’m Seth Jensen,” I gave her a hand and she took it. “I saw you play and I have to say you’re amazing.”
Her hand was soft, just like her. “I’m Ashantee Avery. So, are you from the Razorshark’s school?”
I shook my head. “No, actually I’m a second year college.” I answered honestly.
She raised a brow. “Then, how’d you heard about our little game?”
“My cousin’s the Razorshark’s goalkeeper.” I answered.
“Oh!” She said in recognition. “Your Sarah’s cousin?”
She must have seen the confusion in my face because she laughed before she answered my unasked question.
“Even though we’re hockey enemy doesn’t mean we need to fight every time we see each other.”
“You’re right.” I agreed.
“Though, I haven’t met her personally. Just through the files.”
Suddenly, her phone rung and she excused herself to answer it. “Hey, Liz.” She paused as the other answered. “Sorry, I got distracted. I’ll be there in 20. Yeah, bye.” Then she faced me. “Sorry, I have to go.”
“Wait!” I called and she turned back to me. “At least give me your number?” I flashed her a smile.
She raised a brow at me but I could see her lips twitching for a smile. Then she gave her hand, waiting for me give my phone. She pressed her number and she saved it under the name “hockey girl”.
“Hockey girl?” I asked with a laugh.
“In case you have other girls,” she answered with a laugh and then left me.
With a laugh of my own, I followed suite. It’s time I go home. But when I reached the door, I saw her there.
“Are you waiting for me?” I asked with a flirtatious smile.
“Yeah, right,” she answered sarcastically. “It’s just it started snowing. The diner is 20 minutes away and I didn’t have my gloves and scarf with me right now.”
I turned and saw the first snow fall of October. Kind of a bit early for the holidays. But it was as cold as hell.
“I’ll give you a ride then,” I offered. “Wait here, let me get my car.”
Without waiting for her to answer, I ran towards my car and quickly started it. I parked my black Lexus in front of her and got out to open the door for her.
“Are you sure?” She asked hesitantly. “I mean- you just met me right?”
I took my phone and typed quickly and her phone rang as she received the message. “It’s my info. Send it to your friends so that they’ll know I gave you a ride.”
She smiled at me and climbed in the car. I ran to my side and got in. “Where too?”
“The small restaurant two blocks away.”
I gave her a mocked salute and started to drive. On our way, I kept on joking about things just to keep our atmosphere light and our conversation flowing. And without me really noticing it, I had already stopped in front of the restaurant.
She got out from the car after one last thanks and I watched her entered the restaurant and saw that her friends quickly assaulted her. Probably asking who I was because they kept glancing at my car and pointing. With a laugh, I sped away.
