It was a dream, somewhat like a dream. I almost felt like it was real, the water splashed up on my body as I surfed, and Lee was on the bank. We must have been in California or something like that. The sun was beaming down on my body and my surfboard. You couldn't see land on the other side of the water. I looked back at Lee, and it was like a dream.
I woke up to peaceful birds chirping outside my window. There must have been five of them. I was about to grab a bird when I realized that Lee was right on the other side of the window. I saw him turn around and give me a dopey grin. He was shirtless and sweaty in his boxers. He opened my window and shouted at me.
"KYLIE, HOW'D YOU SLEEP?" He looked toward me, trying to avoid the sun. He had no shirt on, which drove me nuts.
"I HAD A GREAT DREAM! HOW ABOUT YOU?" I shouted back at him in my pajamas.
"I HAD A DREAM ABOUT YOU!" he claimed.
"NICE!" I concluded. "WHAT WAS IT?"
"NOT TELLING BUT YEAH IT WAS NICE!" He responded, "I GOTTA GO. NEED A RIDE TO SCHOOL?" he interrogated.
"WHY ARE WE LEAVING SO EARLY?" I questioned, confused and also wondering why we were shouting.
"IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY, AND I HAVE SOMETHING TO SHOW YOU!!!" He claimed, trying to get me to go. He begged, so finally, I said,
"OKAY? I GUESS?" I was curious as to what he meant.
I closed the window, and my mom said, "Where do you think you are going at 6 am?
"Oh, just to see Lee, and he is taking me to school." I told the truth; I hoped she would allow me to go. I wasn't trying to lie anymore; it gave me a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.
"Lee? Ooh, la la." She made fun of me, but I didn't care because Lee was my friend. It was not like we were boyfriend and girlfriend. However, that would have been a dream come true. Lee wouldn't fall for me. Although, I wish he would.
"Mom, it's not like that. We are only friends." I explained to her.
"Okay, bring your umbrella and pepper spray, and don't forget you can call me if you need anything!" Mom was being the worrisome parent again.
"Okay, mom, I love you." I looked away because I didn't want her to come over by me. Yet, she approached me and kissed my forehead.
"I love you too!" Ugh, so embarrassing, and I am sure Lee saw that. What if he doesn't want to kiss me because she did?
I couldn't remember what I thought until Lee honked again. I continued thinking." Lee had a dream? Was it the same dream? Was it an "intimate dream?" and then I was laughing inside. How would I ever handle that? I was having a hard enough time handling being best friends with a guy I wanted more from but was not very good at being a people person.
I laughed and heard another honk. It was his cousin. I'll admit she was pretty, and she was pleasant to me. She acted as if she knew me, and that bugged me. She didn't know much about me, but what if this was like an act to get me to trust them? Now I'm scared. What was her motive for acting like this? I am overthinking again.
"Hey, you're Kylie, right." she flipped up her sunglasses and looked me in the eyes.
"Yes, I am," I concluded, squinting because of the scorching sun in my eyes.
"You're Lee's cousin?" I looked her up and down; why did everybody have to look so much better than me? I knew it was his cousin, but I still couldn't help but feel jealous. She had the same eyes.
She smacked her gum as she parked her car. Then, she opened the door, which almost hit me. "Yes, I am; it's Mandy." She introduced herself.
"Nice to meet you, Mandy." I was pleased to meet her, but she still seemed fake. She had a style that screamed preppy and had the latest designer clothes. I have never had any good relationships with preppy types.
"I heard you thought I was with Lee or something. Don't worry that I have a boyfriend, and I love him. Also, we aren't in Alabama," she said while laughing. I looked at her and rolled my eyes. It must be something that Lee's family said a lot.
I liked his cousin. She seemed like a sweet girl who could get along with me. She was charming to me, but she was really skinny. I was beginning to wonder whether she ate or not.
"Well, I'm just here to drop off a CD he let me use! Juicy World is nice!" she claimed.
"Ah, ok," I replied, unbothered by the situation.
"I was wondering if you would ever bring this CD back to me. It's been at least a month," said Lee, indifferent to his cousin practically stealing his CD.
"I couldn't help it. I am sorry; I liked his song ''Dreams that are lucidia!" she said, trying to spark a conversation with Lee. I felt terrible because I couldn't add to the conversation, so I was a silent bystander.
"You know I saw him in concert," I heard Lee say gleefully
"NO WAY!" she said with jealousy.
"Yea, he played that song at one of his last concerts. It's a good song! I can't believe he's gone through." Replied Lee
"Who is Juicy World?" I questioned, hoping to change the topic to a lighter theme.
Mandy's and Lee's mouths gapped open in disbelief. They couldn't believe I didn't know who Juicy World was. Mandy grabbed the CD out of Lee's hands and opened her car door aggressively. She turned on her car and put the CD inside the reader. I heard some beats drop and some music start, and some rap music start playing.
The song played on, and I saw Lee's face. Juicy World changed his attitude. In my opinion, Lee wasn't an emotional person, but Juicy World's death changed him.
"Ok, Lee, I gotta go. I am meeting my boyfriend soon," said Mandy as she sped off in the distance. We both watched her car disappear over the hill.
I thought we were going to school, but we didn't. Instead, Lee took me downtown, where he whipped out his phone.
"Ever play this game?" he questioned, slightly nudging me with his phone.
"No, I'm more of a Helics jump girl," I stated.
"Well, I'm going to make you install emonpoke, and you will love it," he concluded.
We drove around in his cute car. Lee showed me how to install the video game. We went around town and saw some pretty cool emonpoke. He explained what an "ashina" emonpoke is because I had no idea what they looked like. They were just different colors. I remember playing emonpoke when I was a little girl, but I don't know all the emonpoke names. I googled it, and there were over 1,000 emonpoke. It was fun!
After that, every week, we drove to the emonstops because they were everywhere, especially in a crowded city like where I lived. But, suddenly, I found myself stuck at home because one of the days it managed to rain. It was crazy how much it had rained. It wasn't normal here, and every day I wouldn't see him would just make my heart ache. I wanted to tell him that I loved him and wanted to be with him forever while I sat in the car and my mom took hours in the grocery store like she usually did.
My mom didn't trust me to drive her car. I mean, she had a nice car this year. Since Lee is considered my boyfriend, she has recently let me use her car as long as I am careful to go meet him. I had to be cautious because a lot of construction is going on in our area. There was always construction going on. There are only two seasons, construction and pothole season.
My mom was afraid I would text and drive, but that wasn't like me. I didn't text and drive because I know what it can cause. I also don't drink and drive because I know what being the designated driver means. My mom told me the story of how my grandma's cousin David was the DD and that he wasn't drunk, but friends pulled the wheel on him. It's sad to believe that everybody but the person who pulled the driver's wheel was dead.
I mean, in Nevada, it was very different. My mom was born in Wisconsin, the dairy state. Everybody had a cheese drawer. If I had been born in Wisconsin and raised there, I would never know what it would be like to live in the sin city of Nevada, and I wouldn't have met Lee.
After I was up late one night, I texted Lee that I would be there tomorrow at noon. He reminded me he was at his cousins' house because of a family occasion. He texted me the address. I told him that I would be there in half an hour. Sometimes I would forget to buckle up, but I remembered the last time I drove.
I had a scooter that I had bought.
My mom wasn't paying attention when I went to visit my boyfriend one day.
Unfortunately, I got into an accident. When alerted about the gravel on the road by the sign, I focused more on my phone and navigation. Suddenly I felt the bumps, and then a big rock sticking out of the ground, but no boulders were in sight.
I hoped I would be safe when I felt my body tilting to the side as I hit the rock.. I felt my body flip in the air as I rapidly fell to the ground. My body still had forward momentum, so I knew this wasn't good. My body kept getting stabbed by tiny rocks, and I couldn't stop it no matter how hard I tried. After rolling in the gravel, the neighbors and construction workers came by and checked to see if I was okay.
I was lying on the road and having issues getting up, "Is there anybody I can call?" asked the kind stranger.
"Call 911!" said another stranger.
"My mom, I want my mom!" I told them her phone number as I was hyperventilating. I felt my lungs getting tired, and my throat started to hurt.
"The ambulance is on its way," said the construction worker.
When something traumatic happened to me, time dragged on. It felt like I was lying on the road for hours, but the stranger had notified me it was only 2-3 minutes. I was shocked and just waited for my mom to answer the phone. I hoped she wouldn't freak out in this situation. If she did, I understood why. After all, getting a call from a stranger that your daughter was in an accident without any further information is a nightmare for parents. Now all that was left to do was wait until my mom answered the phone.
