"That's good to know!" I smiled because I was relieved she wasn't dating Lee and wasn't after him. She was no longer a threat to me, and I felt much safer around her.
"Well, I just don't think that's right, I don't like the neighbor girl, but I'm also not a backstabbing bitch. I just make it seem like I am," I heard her say.
I was curious, so I pushed a little more, "What about Fraidy, you know Lee's girlfriend?" I awaited her response and it flew me for a loop when she said.
"I don't hate her, I envy her." she was drunk as she said this. She looked at me and then took another drink out of her cup.
"Why do you envy her?" I didn't understand why she picked on Kylie when she envied her. Instead, she could have tried to be friends with her.
"Let's just say we got beef from when we were both younger!" as she downed the last of her drink, and stumbled her way to get some soda.
"I'm so sorry about Neisha, her mom just died, and her father left in the third grade, so she's currently living with me and I'm trying to help her but I'm starting to give up on her because she started doing drugs and I don't think that's good at all. Can you guys get to know her and help me? Please?"
"So, you don't like her?" I questioned while betraying her trust and how can we help? We aren't even showing who we really are.
"No, it's not that. She's just not the same anymore. She's bossier since she's popular. She changed, and I don't know what she's been doing just because she can. With drugs and everything, it really changes a person." I felt terrible, honestly. She wasn't an awful person, but she had been thrown through the wringer one too many times. What the heck did she mean by "we got beef?" I don't remember anything of the sort.
"Oh. Ok, sure, we can get to know Neisha." I said convincingly as I pondered the beef idea around my head.
I really liked the disguise that showed what a fun spirit I had. I didn't like always hiding because of something that shouldn't define my life. It is really interesting the way people treat you at parties because everybody is social. Sometimes can be a little too social if you know what I mean. You probably heard of rape drugs, and possibly sleeping with somebody while being drunk and ending up pregnant. It always astounded me how somebody could be so evil and do that. It is a good thing that I decided not to drink. I had a horrific fear of this happening to me.
Anyways, this is the only thing worse than that is having cops bust you and end up in court. I'm talking about the better things such as making friends swimming in pools and taking cute pictures with your friends. My whole night was filled with that kindness that people showed me, even my worst enemy Neisha didn't know me for who I was. She got to know the true me before she knew what she heard about me. After that night, we weren't enemies. Well, at least in the mask. We were acquaintances or friends instead of enemies. I still didn't like her, but for the sake of no drama, I just faced the other way. For once, I fit in. I didn't fit in as me but would have because I didn't fake anything.
When Mystery Man found us later that night, I was so tired I felt like collapsing. It's hard pretending to be someone else while still being yourself. I couldn't believe the girl that taunted me so badly was envious of me. I learned a lot about myself and others. The mystery Man may have well taught me that I am beautiful on the inside without even realizing that it wasn't him that showed it to me.
We were riding in the car and I fell asleep because the car ride felt like forever, but that's what happened when you were so tired. My eyes started to doze off, and when I got home, Mystery Man tried to wake me up. I wouldn't wake up because I was always a hard sleeper. Mystery Man opened the other door, and Marissa tried to wake me up; once again, I didn't wake up.
I woke up in bed when I did awaken.
"You're warm, and you have red splotches all over your face," I heard the Mystery Man say.
"You didn't have to stay, I will be okay! I promise," I said. I hoped he would leave me alone.
"I didn't stay alone, your friend is just washing up the vomit off herself." I could smell her from across the house. I stared blankly at the ceiling while I felt my face heat up. I asked Mystery Man if he could grab the towel and place it on my forehead.
"You want it damp?" he questioned
"No!" I shouted across the house. So loud that I heard barking at the neighbor's house.
"You have to love yourself before you can love somebody else. Why don't you love yourself?" He placed the washcloth on my forehead, but I didn't like the vibe he was giving off, so I pushed him away. It was the same words my mother had said.
"You don't know me, so stop acting as you do!" Who did he think he was? He didn't know me.
"Ok. Well sweet dreams, you little star!" He said, but I could tell he was upset that I lashed out at him.
I smiled. "Thanks" but I wasn't happy. Everybody in my life judged me before they knew me.
Around midnight, I felt a lot better; Marissa had been sitting in his car for a while now. Marissa got out of the car and saw that Mystery Man and I were talking. She then pulled me aside, "Hey, he's your type!" She raised her eyebrows at me saying, "he ain't bad."
"How would you know!?" I questioned as I crossed my arms
"Oh, come on, he's exactly like Lee! except he's more romantic." She stated, excitedly waving her hands around in the direction of Mystery Man like a two-year-old.
"I mean, I never really thought of it since I barely know him!" I said. I was being cautious since my last date hadn't ended well.
"Alright. Well, I'm going to see if I can get away from you lovebirds!" Marissa winked at me.
"Ok," I said, confused.
Marissa and I walked back to where Mystery Man was, and Marissa said, "I'm gonna go home. I'll talk to you later, Kylie. Love ya!"
"Love ya too!" I said to her as my mind was unsure of what to talk about after she would leave.
Marissa awkwardly left in her car and sped off fast.
Mystery Man started speaking, "So, what was I saying?"
"Oh, you were calling me your little star!?" I said with my blushed cheeks
"Oh, yea" I smiled as he concluded that was what he said.
"I wish upon you, my little star, that wherever you are, it may be near but not far from where I am." Again, with the weird but cute.
Awww. He was so cute that I blushed. I turned away, though, because the feelings for Lee were still so real. Still circling in my head like birds in the sky. I don't know why, but I felt the need to pull in Mystery Man for a hug. I turned towards him and gave him a hug. And he smelled so good, I couldn't describe the smell I was sensing, but it was an amazingly good smell. He told me he would text me later and that he was looking forward to seeing me again.
I opened my door and went to the living room where I saw him leave. I watched outside the window, just until I couldn't see him. I closed the window blinds and went upstairs into my room. Of course, I did more studying, as always.
Lee came back home an hour later and he seemed hammered. He must have taken a taxi to the bar or something. He was laughing a lot and stumbled around to get to the doorway, where he fell asleep. He was sleeping there, right on the sidewalk to the entry door.
I couldn't have his aunt or uncle come down to see him like that. So I walked over to him and sat down next to him, and of course, I was wearing my beautiful shoes when he threw up all over them. Then after he saw me, he said "Kylie, I'm sorry," and then fell back asleep.
I called Marissa.
"Marissa, I need your help, but you can't ask any questions. Be at my house in 15 minutes," I whispered.
Marissa arrived, ready to attack, and I told her that Lee was lying on his step.
"Seriously, Kylie? It's MIDNIGHT!!! You still want to help Lee?"
"You know a part of me will always care for him."
"Okay" she said frustrated and flustered.
Marissa bent down to see if Lee was ok.
Lee muttered, "Marissa?"
"Ewww, his breath smells like vomit," Marissa said.
"The smell should match my shoes that aren't so pretty anymore!" I giggled.
"What are we supposed to do with him?" she questioned.
"Into my house on the couch; my mom won't be back tonight."
"Kylie, seriously? You want to take a chance on your freedom for Lee."
"I can't just let his aunt find him outside like this. It would break their hearts and I like his aunt and uncle!"
"Okay, but you owe me!" Marissa said as she tapped her foot.
"Ok, let's just do this!" I said realizing we had probably bit off more than we could chew. He is just dead weight when drunk.
Marissa grabbed his back and crossed our arms to help lift him up. His arms dangled around our shoulders so we could help him walk. Slowly, every step took forever, and Lee was getting distracted by bugs flying in the air. Finally, we made it to the door, opened it, and closed it. We put him on the couch, and I gave him a blanket from my room. We laid him on his side with a bucket in case he puked more and also so he wouldn't choke on his own puke. I begged Marissa to spend the night, so in the morning, she could wake up Lee before school started, and she finally agreed.
